presents Dr. Harold Ivan Smith For Educators Assisting Grievers in the Community For General Public How Long Does Normal Grief Last? For Professional Caregivers If I Were Grieving Right Should I Be Done by Now? September 26-27, 2017 TD Convention Center 1 Exposition Drive Greenville, South Carolina
ABOUT THE PRESENTER Harold Ivan Smith is a graduate of The Mid- America College of Funeral Service, Scarritt College (M.A.), George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University (Ed.S.), and has a doctorate from Asbury Theological Seminary. Smith is recognized as a Fellow in Thanatology by the Association for Death Education and Counseling. He is a member of the faculty of the American Academy of Grief/CMI and teaches continuing education courses for psychologists, social workers, nurses, and pastoral care counselors across the United States. He has served on the Board of the Association for Death Education and Counseling and serves on the board of the Grief Support Network in Kansas City. Harold Ivan teaches an innovative course, Grief in the Workplace, at Mid-America University in Kansas. Smith is a gifted storyteller and is researching the use of story telling in grief resolution and has pioneered the use of children s books with adult grievers. He leads Grief Gatherings innovative storytelling groups at Saint Luke s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, where he is a member of the teaching faculty. He has given lectures in Vietnam, Taiwan, Switzerland, Haiti, and England to grievers, grief counselors, and educators. His primary research is on the griefs of the U.S. Presidents and First Ladies, particularly during their White House Years. His articles have appeared in Illness, Crisis, and Loss, The Director, The American Funeral Director, The Forum, and Journeys. He has written numerous books, which have been published in Spanish, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, and Indonesian. Dr. Smith s newest book, Eleanor: A Spiritual Biography was just released this spring. He frequently lectures on Presidential bereavement and has worked in five presidential libraries and the Special Collections at the University of Washington. His interest in Eleanor Roosevelt began with a study of how her spirituality was shaped by the loss of numerous close family members.
EDUCATORS Assisting Grievers in the Community September 26, :00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. No cost to attend Light refreshments will be served Grief counselors will be available to students is a common euphemism following a death, tragedy, disaster or act of terrorism in a school or community. The provision, while great public relations, is seldom effective. Strangers, however well-credentialed, can complicate the collective grief. The who in counseling and caring is significantly more important to student-grievers. This session will focus on stockpiling resources for when the unbelievable and unthinkable happens in your school or community. Segment 1: There s a Good Reason Why the Boy Scouts Don t Have a Merit Badge for Grief Grief care is both a fragile and fluid undertaking. Too many comforters, however well-meaning, rely on dated resources or approaches. In this session, we will explore new insights into grief and grief care. Segment 2: Restocking Your Toolbox for the Next Outbreak of Grief and Loss This session will offer a dozen practical, inexpensive resources that benefit grievers. Some of these resources are door-openers which invite further exploration of the grief and conversation; others jump-start meaningful thinking. You can make a difference in a griever s sojourn through the valley of the shadow of death. Who should attend? This seminar is designed for school professionals, teachers, nurses, social services, ministers, and administrative staff who care for bereaved children, teens and their families.
GENERAL PUBLIC How Long Does Normal Grief Last? September 26, :45p.m.-9:00p.m. Registration: 6:00p.m.-6:45p.m. No cost to the General Public Light refreshments will be served How long should grief last? In a fast-paced, frantic world who really has the luxury of grieving and healing thoroughly? Bypassing the process, Get over it! Make a new life! and Move on! are verbal torpedoes on a grieving heart. Just as cardiac surgery requires adequate time for restive healing, so does grief. Hearthealing requires grief trending. The goal is to get into your grief rather than to get over. Who should attend? This seminar is designed for community members who are experiencing stress in their life as a side effect of the death of someone close to them. This seminar is also appropriate for those who wish to help a friend or family member who is experiencing grief or loss in their life.
PROFESSIONAL CAREGIVERS If I Were Grieving Right Should I Be Done by Now? September 27, :30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration 8:00 a.m. 8:30 a.m. Lunch break from 11:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. $35 Registration fee for professionals seeking CEU credit. There is no charge for this seminar if you are not receiving CEU credit. In a culture that values speed and efficiency, grievers often feel ashamed that they are failing to get over their loss(es). Grief is not about getting over, but rather getting into and giving grief time and space can be life-affirming and life-changing. During this session, Dr. Smith will cover the following: Grieving in the Fast Lane: Ten Lurking Dangerous Intersections - American culture quickly disenfranchises grievers assumed to be wallowing in their grief. Grief can be sabotaged and compounded by cultural assumptions of normal grief. Grief in a Threatening World - This can t be happening to me! There is no immunity in a grief-saturated world. Senseless death compounds the suffering of grievers made painfully aware of the speed at which one s world can be upended. Grief in an Unstable World - What is going on around the griever impacts what s going on inside the griever. Helping Grievers Navigate Postmortem Discoveries - No matter how well you think you know someone after a death, grievers can be blindsided by a postmortem discovery. The crisis may be initiated by a financial discovery, an updated/outdated will, the awareness of another sexual partner, a gambling addiction, or the squandering of financial assets and resources. Two questions emerge or erupt: Who knows? and Who knew? With support from clinicians, over time, another question emerges: Now what? At the end of this session, attendees will be able to: Identify issues curtailing grief integration. Determine the factors in traumatic death and grief that challenge stability. Examine risk factors for complicated mourning and identify common post-trauma reactions. Defuse the desire to emotionally bypass grief and trauma. Who Should Attend? This workshop is for professional caregivers interested in furthering their knowledge of the process of dying, grief and healing including but not limited to: Physicians, Nurses, Chaplains, Social Workers, Counselors, Educators, Psychologists, Ministers, Hospice Personnel, Funeral Directors, Embalmers, Guidance Counselors, Emergency Responders and Law Enforcement. This seminar is open to all licensed funeral directors and embalmers in South Carolina and North Carolina.
