3 INTRODUCTION 5 1 The College s approach to Equality and Diversity has been embedded within the curriculum and this report provides a useful summary of some of the activities which have been undertaken corporately and within the Schools during Academic Year 2013/ ESTIVAL PITA F CURR Y AN D CUL TURE A copy of our Single Equality Scheme and Action Plan can be found on our website:
4 CORPORATE ACTIVITIES The College both attended and hosted a number of events during 2013/14, a number of these have been included within this annual summary for the year. In September the Communications Team supported the 1 Big Multicultural Event in Alexandra Park for the third year running. This included supporting the organisers, producing a brochure and also being in attendance. This provided the College with an opportunity to network with a wide range of community representatives and raise our profile with these groups During October 2013 the College hosted a National Autistic Society Open Event in the Atrium. During that same month the College sponsored the Eid Celebation on behalf of the Bangladeshi Support Centre which was also held in the College Atrium. In November the College s Students Union held a fundraising dinner in Shelley s for their True Colours charity fund. The fund for 2013/14 supports the following charities: Ormiston Children and Families Trust Women s Lighthouse Aid Papworth Trust The College also hosted a Ladies Night fundraising event for Inspire Suffolk in the Atrium with over 140 people attending and raising The Chair of Corporation attended as the Mayor s guest the Remembrance Sunday Service. The College again supported the Hindu community by hosting and sponsoring the Diwali celebration in Shelley s Restaurant. Catering and Hospitality students cooked and served the food for the event.
5 Also in November the Friends of the Citizen s Advice Bureau used our facilities and we supported two Year 12 students from St Albans High School to raise over 1,200 at a dinner in Shelley s as part of their funding activities for Operation Wallaca. Stars of Suffolk was held in the Atrium which brought in a range of people from the community who do not normally visit the College. The College sponsored the Young Person of the Year Award and helped celebrate the achievements of members of the Suffolk community who achieved great things across the diverse and wide ranging criteria. 5 1 SUFFOLK 0 2 F STARS O Representatives from the College, Fellows and also the Students Union attended both the Suffolk Community Foundation (associated with the True Colours fund) and also the Bangladeshi Support Centre s AGMs. CAROL CON CERT During December the Education Quarter Chaplaincy and our Students Union co-ordinated the annual carol service which was attended by students from across the College. Our music students took part in a Christmas Performance in St Peter s Church which involved members of the community. In February 2014 the College supported a fundraising Pudding Evening event for The Hearing Centre in Shelley s. Again another successful event. During March and April the Communications and Catering and Hospitality teams worked closely with local charities to host fund raising dinners in Shelley s helping to raise nearly 4000 for: 4YP Ipswich Hindu Samaj Dominic Barker Trust EACH Appeal In June we hosted a fundraising event for Inspire Suffolk in Shelleys. In July we attended the Indian Mela as part of Ip-Art. During the year we were pleased to be able to support the Sisters Circle, from the Ipswich and Suffolk Muslim Council by hosting their meetings in our meeting rooms. 6 SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Each School in the College has provided a summary of their activities during the Academic Year 2013/14. The School of Business, Health & Childcare Term 1 in Business British values have been delivered as lessons in PSE which focused on the democratic system and what makes community cohesion. In class in Customer Service, we have covered Personal Presentation and had discussions about Rules for wearing uniforms and legislation with regard to religious beliefs and culture. In Investigating Travel and Tourism a group had a discussion about respecting cultural and religious traditions when visiting a country, for example Dubai. Level 2 and L3 Y1 Business and L3 Travel and Tourism have been planning for the Children in Need events taking place in November. L3 Business will be trading for most of the days this week in particular over the lunch breaks and some of this will continue into next week as part of Global Enterprise Week. Within the L3 Y2 Internet Marketing module, we have discussed how companies track your purchases and analyse your buying behaviour, and how cookies are. Within L2 Business we have looked at corporate social responsibility, and the laws and ethics surrounding business, including looking at videos of work conditions in India and China. Term 2 A variety of external speakers for Business and Travel and tourism including supporting with Event planning, Interviews, CV writing, the Retail business of Travel and Tourism, Team building at GOALS, Employer expectations. Educational visits including UCS, Colchester Zoo Visitor Attraction as a business, Cambridge as a Destination. Case studies used in classroom activities use diverse examples to encourage students to identify different cultural values and beliefs.
7 Term 1 in Childcare Embedding within core qualification in respect of children speaking different language, children from a range of backgrounds, meeting children various needs in setting e.g. children with autism, ADHD, ling term illnesses. British Values, Cohension and Democracy delivered as part of PSE. Celebration of festivals as part of core units with focus on Diwali, Thanksgiving. Faith Walks planned for December Term 2 L1 - Unit 20 links to mealtimes for range of diverse needs and groups. L1 Unit 24 links to health and how you manage H & SC for individual additional needs. Unit 17 Babies and special educational needs. PSE British Values, Montessori School Environment, Camp America. L1 planned Faith Walk Additional classes delivered for ESOL students/parents and looking at dual language resources. Term 1 in Health & Social Care The mandatory units on the Health and Social Care, relating to pro-social behaviour and respect for equality laws (like the 2010 Equality Act) are embedded in the programme. Diversity is also part of the common teaching areas for case study examples e.g. disability challenges and at placement where student work with a range of people in care. British values are embedded in PSE lesson content and on the SOW focusing on rule of law and democratic system and what makes community cohesion recently the French Bombing have given a wider scope for democratic debate and respect for life and other cultures. Term 2 British values incorporated into PSE Guest speakers, (from Live well Suffolk, UCS school of Nursing, Sensing Change and disabilities) have shown a range of opportunities diverse insights and opportunities to our students. Successful placement practice in diverse areas like mental health, disabilities, elderly, children s and youth offending. The mandatory unit 2 equality laws (like the 2010 Equality Act etc) are embedded in the programme. Employability week: like Disabilities and Sensory awareness Sensory Change Diversity is also part of the common teaching areas for case study examples e.g. disability challenges and at placement where student work with a range of people in care. School of Commercial Services Term 1 in Beauty Therapy and Business Admin Prevent Training Good practise - Work experience Suffolk Carers Democracy and Individual liberty Student voice British values Tolerance of beliefs and faiths.
8 Term 2 Level 2 and 3 Beauty Therapy students have carried out Voluntary work at St Elizabeth s Hospice teaching nurses and carers to carry out hand and arm massage so that they can in turn provide massages for their patients. This has led to work experience for students at the Hospice and is a new link for us. Business Administration and Beauty therapy students have reviewed recruitment processes for diversity- and discussed direct and indirect discrimination. Business Administration apprentices have been reviewing CHAD and Beauty Therapy students have been embedding chad into their PSE lessons. Beauty Therapy students have carried out voluntary work at Sue Ryder performing treatments on a diverse range of clients. Beauty Therapy students have explored discrimination in Hair and Beauty Salons and the impact that this has in the workplace. Term 1 in Hairdressing Prevent training in all PSE sessions British values including democracy Student involvement election of class representative and forum Meetings Guest speakers - Chaplaincy tolerance of different faiths and beliefs Term 2 Case study activities in relation to discrimination in the workplace within the hair and beauty industry were embedded into a PSE sessions for students to discuss and evaluate. Raising awareness of diversity in commercial salons students working on clients with disabilities. One student reported at forum this embedding had supported her when a client had come into the zone in a wheelchair, she felt confident as to how to deal with this client. Understand the difference of stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination this supported students in relations to industry. Term 1 in Hospitality & Catering Where it pink day charity event Healthy Eating project in the Atrium Suffolk Skills Show demonstrations PSE on British values, visiting speakers CONCLUSION Equality and Diversity continues to be a priority for the College and this summary provides examples of the outstanding work undertaken across the College. The College s profile remains high with community groups and they regularly approach us to work with us on a range of activities.
