WELCOME Dear Friend of Make-A-Wish, Thank you for your interest in the Kids For Wish Kids program. Each year, hundreds of local kids learn about compassion and discover their own sense of community pride through Make-A-Wish Oregon s Kids For Wish Kids program. They design and implement fundraisers to help grant wishes to local children who are battling lifethreatening medical conditions. Students have the power to make a difference in the lives of other kids. Kids For Wish Kids is a custom-tailored program that provides schools and youth organizations with the opportunity to engage in fundraising activities to bring hope and happiness to sick children and their families. Students who participate in the Kids For Wish Kids program gain leadership skills, build self-esteem and learn to work together toward a common goal. This proactive approach provides students with the tools to start a community service program within your school s curriculum or within pre-organized clubs (e.g. student council, service clubs, etc.). This all happens while helping others and having fun! Starting a Kids For Wish Kids fundraiser is easy and Make- A-Wish is committed to ensuring a positive experience from start to finish. This packet is designed to make establishing fundraisers both easy and fun. Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Best wishes, Catherine Spellman Community Engagement Manager cspellman@oregon.wish.org

Beaverton High School raised more than $20,000 from their Week of Wishes events What fundraiser you are going to plan? You can create something new or use our list of event ideas for inspiration (see following pages). Consider hosting a Wish Week full of different fundraising events and set your goal high! STEP 2 CHOOSE A DATE AND LOCATION. Work with an advisor to decide the best date and location for your fundraiser. STEP 3 REGISTER YOUR EVENT. Fill out the Kids For Wish Kids form and , mail or fax it to the Make-A-Wish office. Then, contact Community Engagement Manager, Catherine Spellman, to discuss your project, ask questions, order supplies and find out how Make-A-Wish can help. Tualatin High School organized a 5K Fun Run as their Kids For Wish Kids project STEP 4 GET THE WORD OUT. Design posters and flyers that you can put up at your school and in the community to get as much support as possible for your event. Request a letter from the Make-A-Wish office to send to parents and businesses in your community to get support and donations. Set up your personalized fundraising website to or post on your social media sites. Order supplies from the Make-A-Wish marketplace to sell. Work with the Make-A-Wish office to discuss more of your ideas. Community Arts Preschool hosts an annual lemonade stand after school STEP 5 CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESS! CONTACT INFORMATION: Catherine Spellman, Community Engagement Manager cspellman@oregon.wish.org
FACT SHEET ABOUT MAKE-A-WISH OREGON Make-A-Wish Oregon granted its first wish in 1983 to Sam who wished to meet Erik Estrada. In that first year we granted five wishes. Today we grant more than 250 wishes annually to children throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington. We are able to do this important work thanks to a powerful network of donors, sponsors, volunteers and staff members. But our work is far from finished. Right now, for every child who receives the gift of a wish experience, there is another child we are still trying to reach. With community support and your investment in Make-A-Wish Oregon, deserving children will be able to look forward to their future with excitement instead of fear. QUALIFICATIONS FOR A WISH Any child over the age of 2½ and under the age of 18, diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition may qualify for a wish. TYPES OF WISHES The wish requests are as unique as the children who make them. The majority of wishes fall into four categories: I WISH TO GO I WISH TO BE I WISH TO MEET I WISH TO HAVE WISHES BY THE NUMBERS 1983 The year our chapter began granting wishes to local children. 3,700+ Number of wishes the chapter has granted since our inception in Number of wishes the chapter granted in FY2017. f aceb ook.com/orwish ins t agr a m.co m/ma ke awish o rego n EXPENSES BY FUNCTION based on fiscal year 2015 audited financials 85% Wish Granting & Program Services 11% Fundraising & Events 4% Management & General t w i t t e r. c o m /O R W I S H youtub e.com/make AW ish O regon
WHY A WISH Event Ideas
EVENT IDEAS Event Ideas *SUGGESTED EVENT FORMAT: HOST A WISH WEEK! Many successful schools host a combination of events in one week with a goal of raising $5,000 to adopt the wish of a local child. Contact Make-A-Wish for more details on hosting a Wish Week. Make-A-Wish Stars Sell special Make-A-Wish paper stars that can be ordered through the Make-A-Wish office. People write their names on them and can be displayed in hallways or classrooms. Rivalry Sports Game or Tournament Coordinate a sports tournament. Charge a registration fee for individuals, pairs or teams. Charge admission, sell auction items have a half-court shooting contest during a rivalry sports game between you and another school. Fun Runs This kind of event can really involve your community. Ask walkers to make a small donation to participate or receive pledges. One school district recently asked for $3.00 from elementary students, $4.00 from middle school students and $5.00 from high school students. They also sold Fun Run T-shirts. Their onemile Fun Run raised $5,000 in one afternoon! Come up with a theme to make it more fun. Powder Puff Football Game Have your female students compete in a football game with members of your football team as their coaches. Pageants Host a pageant and crown the winners who fundraise the most Mr and Ms of your school. -Thons Plan dance-a-thon, etc. Generate pledge money for hours spent participating in the event. Money Week Donate different types of money each day and have a school-wide competition. Monday: Copper coins. Tuesday: Silver coins. Wednesday: One-dollar bills. Thursday: Five-dollar bills. Friday: Ten-dollar bills. Make it a class competition for a grand prize and get your community invovled. Sell Candy-Grams Write messages to friends and teachers, which are delivered during the day. Each message has a piece of candy attached. Candy-grams work especially well around holidays.
EVENT IDEAS Event Ideas Have a Prom Fashion Show Two local high schools recently held prom fashion shows for Make-A-Wish. They borrowed dresses and tuxedos from local retailers for the big event, sold advertisements for their program booklets and solicited local businesses for prizes to include in a silent auction. They also charged $10 admission to the event. One of the schools raised more than $5,000 for Make-A-Wish. Have a Band or Choir Concert Collect donations at your next holiday or spring concert. This is great for high school and middle school band and choir groups. You can charge an admission fee or pass around a can to collect donations. Host a Spaghetti Dinner or a Pancake Breakfast You can work with a local restaurant or ask a group of parents to help with the cooking. Invite students and residents in the community. Sell T-shirts One local school developed a cool T-shirt design and sold them to students and parents at their school s basketball games. Compete in a Penny War Each grade level competes against each other to collect the most pennies. Students are encouraged to put nickels, dimes and quarters in another grades container to get the corresponding amount of pennies subtracted from their total count. Organize a Student/Teacher Basketball or Volleyball Game Students and teachers compete against each other in basketball, volleyball or any other sporting event. Host a Holiday Party You can plan parties for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine s Day or St. Patrick s Day. Teacher or School Talent Show One local high school got many of their teachers to perform in a talent show and charged admission.
EXAMPLES OF HOW YOUR DONATIONS MAKE WISHES COME TRUE WHERE DOES YOUR $ GO? $7,500 CAN HELP FUND: An entire wish experience. This donation would allow you to become an Adopt-A-Wish partner. You will adopt a local child s wish and receive a plaque or scrapbook with more details about his/her wish experience. $5,000 CAN HELP FUND: Roundtrip airfare for an entire family flying to a tropical location. $1,500 CAN HELP FUND: Spending money for a family during a travel wish or a family s hotel accommodations for a week. $1,000 CAN HELP FUND: A new bedroom set for a bedroom makeover wish or a television for an entertainment center wish. Admission for a child s wish to swim with dolphins. $750 CAN HELP FUND: Gifts for 10 children while on their wish trips $500 CAN HELP FUND: An Xbox for an entertainment center wish or a shore excursion for a family on a cruise wish. $250 CAN HELP FUND: A limo to whisk the child to and from the airport for their travel wish. A special meal at Disneyland in Goofy s Kitchen for 2 wish kids.
