3 Introduction Welcome to the Health Improvement, Equality and Involvement Department Training Brochure April to September As a department we target health inequalities within the West and aim to improve the health and wellbeing of all people who live and work within the WHSCT area. The service works directly with staff and the public as well as in partnership with other statutory, voluntary and community organisations. The context for our work is defined by the Programme for Government Framework, Health and Wellbeing Delivering Together and the Making Life Better Public Health Framework for Northern Ireland We aim to build on the skills and capacity of people to deliver quality, effective health improvement programmes; co-ordinate and facilitate health improvement activities and provide information and advice. This brochure outlines the various training courses that we offer relating to the health and wellbeing agenda.
4 Consent Training 7 June 2018, St Columb s Park House, L Derry 13 September 2018, Large Lecture Theatre, South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen Brook NI 3 hours (9.30 am 12.30pm) Practitioners/Youth Workers/Teachers or anyone working in a role that supports young people. To raise awareness around the concept of consent. 2 Increased awareness about what consent is Exploration of sex, consent and rights Increased awareness of consent and social media Increased understanding about how our values can impact on our decision making.
5 Cook It! Tutor Training 19 & 25 April 2018, All Saints Church Hall, Glendermott Road, L Derry 6 & 13 September 2018, St Columba s Parish Church Hall, Omagh Community Food and Nutrition Team 2 Days - 6 hours per day (10.00am 4.00pm) Community and voluntary organisations. To empower participants to deliver a 6 week Cook It programme to their service users in the context of health and wellbeing. To increase participants knowledge of nutrition messages together with practical skills when preparing and cooking food. 3 Understanding the concept of healthy eating Motivation to make small changes Developed a healthy attitude to food and diet Enhanced positive approach to living a healthy lifestyle. 6 Facilitating Groups 14 June 2018, Conference Room, Top Floor, Shared Future Centre, L Derry 25 September 2018, Lecture Theatre, South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen Health Improvement 7 hours (9.30am 4.30pm) People who have limited experience of working with groups or who want to develop their skills in group work. To improve participant s knowledge, understanding and confidence in facilitating groups. 4 Understanding of what a group is and why is it successful or unsuccessful Recognition of the basic theory and practice for facilitating a group Awareness of the importance of building trust, communication and listening skills Understanding of group delivery and group life Knowledge of the roles and associated behaviours that people take on in a group.
7 Food Values Tutor Training 13 June 2018, Apex Living Centre, L Derry Community Food & Nutrition Team 5 hours (10.00am 3.00pm) Community and voluntary organisations. To empower participants to deliver a 4 week Food Values programme to their service users in the context of health and wellbeing. To increase knowledge of how to make healthy food choices and develop shopping and spending habits within a limited budget. 5 Increased confidence to deliver the Food Values programme Understand the basic concept of the Eatwell Guide Enhanced ability to plan and shop using a budget.
8 Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) 19 & 20 April 2018, St Columb s Park House, L Derry 24 & 25 May 2018, Theatre Room, Enterprise Centre, Omagh 13 & 14 September 2018, Broadmeadow View Room, Fermanagh House, Enniskillen Mental Health First Aid Trainers 2 Days - 7 hours per day (9.30am 4.30pm) Open to all. To increase participants knowledge and skills in providing initial support for someone with a mental health problem. 6 Increase knowledge and skills to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems Develop skills to provide initial help Increase awareness of services to guide a person towards appropriate professional help. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or who is in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves. MHFA does NOT teach people to be therapists.
9 SafeTALK 24 April 2018, Old School Canteen, Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital, Omagh 26 June 2018, Conference Room, Fermanagh House, Enniskillen 11 September 2018, Lecture Theatre 2, MDEC, Altnagelvin Hospital, L Derry SafeTALK Trainers 3 hours (9.30am 12.30pm) SafeTALK seminar can be delivered to anyone over the age of 16. The seminar equips participants with the skills to recognise a person with thoughts of suicide, to engage them and then connect them with an organisation or individual who can intervene to help keep them safe. 7 Participants will have increased confidence and ability in instigating and adopting the T.A.L.K. steps, especially asking the question around suicide. SafeTALK is a 3 hour seminar which raises general awareness on how to prevent suicide in our community The seminar equips participants with the skills to recognise a person with thoughts of suicide, to engage them and then connect them with an organisation or individual who can intervene to help keep them safe SafeTALK is ideally placed for delivery in a workplace or community setting. This seminar is NOT suitable for anyone recently bereaved by suicide.
10 Sexual Health 10 May 2018, Genitourinary Medicine Clinic, Altnagelvin Hospital, L Derry Health Improvement and Genitourinary Medicine Service 2.5 hours (2.00pm 4.30pm) Open to all. To raise awareness of sexual health issues and accessing sexual health services. 8 Increased awareness of the signs and symptoms of Sexually Transmitted Infections Understanding of the testing and treatment available for Sexually Transmitted infections Increased knowledge of how to access Sexual Health Services Increased knowledge of what happens at a sexual health clinic Empower participants to look after their own sexual health.
11 Solihull Approach Foundation Training 29 May 2018 & 5 June 2018, Lecture Theatre 2, MDEC, Altnagelvin Hospital, L Derry Solihull 2 days - 7 hours per day (9.30am 4.30pm) Agencies and organisations working in the delivery of early year s family support provision. Understand the Solihull Approach model of containment, reciprocity and behaviour management and apply it into your everyday work practice. Understand and apply the Solihull model to your practice Understand the theory of attachment and apply it to your practice Understand how the baby brain develops and how the emotional and physical environment provided for the baby is critical for this development to take place impacting upon the child s ability to regulate his own emotions and behaviours Importance of practical group discussion to support your working practice Understand the factors that affect parenting and how to use the Solihull Approach to help families overcome inhibiting factors Recognition of how effective communication skills with families experiencing difficulties can improve family life Importance of working with professionals to provide a multi-agency approach and use of a common language using the Solihull approach Importance of evaluating the effectiveness of your interventions. 9
12 Parenting Group Facilitator Training 22 May 2018, Conference Room, Top Floor, Shared Futures Centre, L Derry 20 June 2018, Strabane Enterprise Centre, Strabane 5 September 2018, Common Room, Limavady Health Centre, Limavady Health Improvement 7 hours (9.30am 4.30pm) Practitioners who are working with children, young people and parents and have already completed the two day Solihull Foundation Training course. 10 To train participants on how to facilitate the Solihull Approach Understanding Your Child 10 week programme to parents and carers of children. Understanding the needs of children Understanding of the different parenting styles Development of skills and techniques to improve confidence in the delivery of the Solihull Approach Awareness of the importance of family communication, how to promote this and the impact on family life.
13 Solihull Understanding Trauma Seminar 2 May 2018, Lecture Theatre 1, MDEC, Altnagelvin, L Derry 16 May 2018, Board Room, Strabane Enterprise Centre, Strabane 12 June 2018, Old School Canteen, Tryone & Fermanagh Hospital, Omagh. 11 September 2018, Lecture Theatre, South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen. Solihull 7 hours (9.30am pm) Practitioners who are working with children, young people and parents and have already completed the two day Solihull Foundation Training course. 11 To develop an awareness of trauma, the effects that it has on children and young people and strategies you can use to support them. Understanding and awareness of adverse childhood experiences Recognising the effects of trauma on children and adults Demonstrating how trauma can affect brain development Understanding how trauma affects behaviour, attachment and epigenetics Understanding how to support traumatised children, adults, families and communities Understanding how the Solihull Approach model underpins all of the above.
14 Traffic Light Sexual Behaviour 21 June 2018, Large Lecture Theatre, South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen Brook NI 6.5 hours (9.30am 4pm) Open to all. To support practitioners working with children and young people to identify/assess and respond appropriately to sexual behaviours. Introduce participants to Brooks Traffic Light Sexual Behaviours Toolkit Increase practitioners confidence in relation identifying safeguarding issues early and responding appropriately to children/young people s sexual behaviours. 12
15 Transgender Awareness 14 June 2018, Main Hall, St Columb s Park House, L derry SAIL NI 3 hours (1.30pm 4.30pm) Open to all. To raise awareness about transgender issues, support available and how organisations can be trans-inclusive. Improved awareness of the trans community and the issues that affect them Improve knowledge of terminology, research, legislation and policy Raised awareness about support available to trans people and their families Increased awareness about making services/education environments trans-inclusive. 13
16 Walk Leader 15 May 2018, Conference Room, Omagh Leisure Centre, Omagh 20 June 2018, Boardroom, Gransha Park House, L Derry 19 September 2018, Room 5, Limavady Community Development Initiative (LCDI), Limavady Walk leader Facilitator 6.5 hours (9.30am 4.00pm) Anyone wishing to set up a walking for health group as part of their work role or in a voluntary capacity. 14 To equip adults with the skills & knowledge to confidently lead health walks in their local community or workplace. To understand the health benefits of walking To motivate inactive people to participate in health walks To develop walking for health programmes To plan and risk assess walking routes To lead safe and enjoyable health walks for people of all ages and abilities.
