3 Page 3 Introduction Welcome to the Health Improvement, Equality and Involvement Department Training Brochure September 2018 to March As a department we target health inequalities within the West and aim to improve the health and wellbeing of all people who live and work within the WHSCT area. The service works directly with staff and the public as well as in partnership with other statutory, voluntary and community organisations. The context for our work is defined by the Programme for Government Framework, Health and Wellbeing Delivering Together and the Making Life Better Public Health Framework for Northern Ireland We aim to build on the skills and capacity of people to deliver quality, effective health improvement programmes; co-ordinate and facilitate health improvement activities and provide information and advice. This brochure outlines the various training courses that we offer relating to the health and wellbeing agenda. 4 Page 4 Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) 4 & 5 December 2018, Gransha Park House, Gransha Park, L Derry 5 & 6 February 2019 Omagh Area, Venue to be confirmed 12 & 13 March 2019 Enniskillen Area, Venue to be confirmed ASIST Trainers 2 Days - 8 hours per day (9am - 5pm) The training is aimed at professionals and individuals who are working in an area where they are likely to come into contact with someone who is at risk of suicide. It is suitable for mental health professionals, social workers, counsellors, ambulance staff, community volunteers, etc. ASIST is a two day intensive, interactive and skills based course designed to help caregivers to recognise risk and learn how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. It is recommended that participants attend suicide awareness training (e.g. SafeTALK) prior to doing this workshop. Learning Objectives As an ASIST trained first aid intervention caregiver, you will be better able to: Identify people who have thoughts of suicide Understand how your beliefs and attitudes can affect suicide interventions Seek a shared understanding of the reasons for thoughts of suicide and the reasons for living Review current risks and develop a plan to increase safety from suicidal behaviour for an agreed amount of time Follow up on all safety commitments, accessing further help as needed. Course Content You must attend the two full days of training. Participants develop their skills through observation; supervised simulation experiences and role play in large and small groups and cover the following: Connecting: Examines participants own attitudes towards suicide Understanding: Provides participants with the knowledge and skills to recognise risks and develop safe plans Assisting: Presents a model of effective suicide intervention Networking: Generates information about resources in the local community

5 Page 5 Boccia Leaders Award 18 October 2018, Lecture Theatre 1, MDEC, Altnagelvin, L Derry Disability Sport NI 3.5 hours per day (1pm pm) Those working with older people, people with disabilities or mobility problems. To enable participants to facilitate Boccia sessions. Background to Boccia Court layout Warm-ups Propulsion skills Game play Rules and classification Boccia (pronounced Bot-cha ) is a Paralympic sport designed specifically for athletes with a disability affecting loco motor function, but is also enjoyed by older people and those with limited mobility. Boccia is played indoors on a court similar in size to a badminton court. Athletes throw, kick or use a ramp to propel a ball onto the court with the aim of getting closest to a jack ball.! Boccia equipment is not provided to participants to take away with them after the course. Participants will be expected to purchase or access their own Boccia equipment to enable them to commit to actively facilitate Boccia sessions on a regular basis.

6 Page 6 Childminders Week Nutrition Workshop 25 September 2018, Lecture Theatre, SWAH, Enniskillen 27 September 2018, Lecture Theatre 2, MDEC, Altnagelvin Hospital, L Derry Community Food and Nutrition Team 2 hours (7pm - 9pm) Individuals that look after children To provide nutritional guidance for feeding children aged 6 months to 5 years in a child care setting. Learning Objectives To identify appropriate foods for this age group To recognise portion sizes To be confident in relaying guidance on vitamin supplements. Course Content Appropriate foods for weaning and feeding 1-5 s Child sized portions and nutritional guidance Sugar and dental health Vitamin supplement recommendations Snack and meal planning ideas. This workshop is running to support Childminders Week, 24 September 2018! Learning Objectives will gain information on nutrition and healthy eating, physical activity and weekly challenges to encourage and motivate their participants on their weight loss journey will learn how to support participants and provide week by week guidance for weight loss. To raise awareness around the concept of consent. To increase participants knowledge of nutrition messages together with practical skills when preparing and cooking food. 14 Page 14 Digital Safeguarding Awareness (E-Safety Training) 11 October 2018, Central Hall, Omagh Campus, South West College, Omagh 13 December 2018, Lecture Theatre 1, MDEC, Altnagelvin Hospital, L Derry Health Improvement, Equality & Involvement Department Social Services Learning, Development and Governance 7 hours (9.30am pm) This is multi-disciplinary and multi-agency training aimed at practitioners working with children and young people (teachers, police officers, social workers, youth workers etc.). The training is also relevant to practitioners who are supporting others (such as foster carers). The training will focus on the benefits and harms facing children and young people in the online world and will provide resources to support practitioners in their safeguarding work with children. The training will also provide resources for staff who intend to deliver their own bespoke e-safety training within their respective organisations. The training will focus on more than just e-safety and will discuss Digital Safeguarding elements of: Promotion of digital literacy and resilience, Prevention of harm and Protection strategies when harm has occurred. Learning Objectives The training will provide you with information about key issues affecting our young people and will provide you with resources including apps and signposting from CEOP, NSPCC and others that will increase your understanding of e-safety and digital safeguarding so you can deliver bespoke training to the target groups that you work with covering the following areas: Confident, controlling or casual- what is our responses to children s digital lives? What are children and young people doing online - why, where and how? What are the risks and benefits for children using technology? The role of the parent/carer and the importance of communication Staying safer - knowing what the risks are and what to do about them.

15 Page 15 Digital Safeguarding Awareness (E-Safety Training) Participants who wish to become trainers will be registered with Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP). Therefore you must be able to produce the following on or before the day of training: A letter on headed notepaper from your organisation stating your role, duration in the organisation and how you intend to use the training in relation to your role A form of photographic identification i.e. passport or driving licence Be willing to deliver at least one course for your organisation by 31 March Digital Safeguarding (E-Safety Training) Topic Workshops These 2-hour workshops are only available on a bookable basis for groups of 10 or more and are designed to meet the specific needs within your area of practice. Workshops can only be booked following completion of the one-day Digital Safeguarding Training. To highlight the Chief Medical Officers Physical Activity guidelines for children aged 0-5 years and to provide information to support childcare providers enhance physical activity opportunities for babies and children aged 0-5 years in their setting. Learning Objectives How to maximise physical activity opportunities for children from birth to 5 years in your setting Promoting a whole setting approach to physical activity by providing tools to audit your current provision and develop a physical activity policy Practical ideas for enhancing physically active play.

Recognition of the basic theory and practice for facilitating a group Awareness of the importance of building trust, communication and listening skills Understanding of group delivery and group life Knowledge of the roles and associated behaviours that people take on in a group.

To train people working with the over 65 s to deliver basic falls prevention messages. Learning Objectives Participants will be aware of the causes for falls in older people and will be able to disseminate the learning to reduce falls in the home. Course Content Statistics for falls in older people Why falls occur Coping strategies when a person falls How to deliver falls prevention messages to older people.

To empower participants to deliver a 4 week Food Values programme to their service users in the context of health and wellbeing and to increase knowledge of how to make healthy food choices and develop shopping and spending habits within a limited budget. To support people with a learning disability, to enhance their cooking skills and to demonstrate how to eat healthily where cost is a consideration. To gain knowledge in facilitating basic activities relating to core skills (movement, throwing, catching and striking) for children with physical, sensory or learning disabilities aged 5+. Learning Objectives To participate in practical demonstrations relating to core skills To consider how to adapt activities to promote participation of children with disabilities.

23 Page 23 Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) 12 & 13 September 2018, AMH New Horizons, Enniskillen 11 & 12 October YMCA, Drumahoe, L Derry Mental Health First Aid Trainers 2 Days - 7 hours per day (9.30am pm) Open to anyone of the age of 16 To increase participants knowledge and skills in providing initial support for someone with a mental health problem. Learning Objectives Increase knowledge and skills to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems Develop skills to provide initial help Increase awareness of services to guide a person towards appropriate professional help.! Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or who is in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves. MHFA does NOT teach people to be therapists.

Moving More Often is a training programme for health and social care workers and volunteers who work with frailer older people and who wish to promote physical activity and movement in a range of community, residential and social care settings. Learning Objectives To highlight the importance of moving more often in later years To explore practical considerations when promoting physical activity and movement with frailer older people To enable participants to provide a range of activities which enhance existing physical activity programmes including group games. The seminar equips participants with the skills to recognise a person with thoughts of suicide, to engage them and then connect them with an organisation or individual who can intervene to help keep them safe. Learning Objectives Participants will have increased confidence and ability in instigating and adopting the T.A.L.K. steps, especially asking the question around suicide. SafeTALK is a 3 hour seminar which raises general awareness on how to prevent suicide in our community The seminar equips participants with the skills to recognise a person with thoughts of suicide, to engage them and then connect them with an organisation or individual who can intervene to help keep them safe SafeTALK is ideally placed for delivery in a workplace or community setting.! This seminar is NOT suitable for anyone recently bereaved by suicide.

To increase knowledge of the practical aspects of weaning, to encourage, develop skills and confidence in the ability to provide healthy weaning foods for babies. Learning Objectives Participants will have increased confidence and ability in instigating and adopting the T.A.L.K. steps, especially asking the question around suicide. Recognising the importance of appropriate nutrition for weaning babies Demonstrate how to adapt families meals for weaning babies Understand and awareness of skills to deliver a 4 week Solid Start programme in a group setting.

To train participants on how to facilitate the Solihull Approach Understanding Your Child 10 week programme to parents and carers of children. Learning Objectives Understanding the needs of children Understanding of the different parenting styles Development of skills and techniques to improve confidence in the delivery of the Solihull Approach Awareness of the importance of family communication, how to promote this and the impact on family life.

To develop an awareness of trauma, the effects that it has on children and young people and strategies you can use to support them. Learning Objectives Understanding and awareness of adverse childhood experiences Recognising the effects of trauma on children and adults Demonstrating how trauma can affect brain development Understanding how trauma affects behaviour, attachment and epigenetics Understanding how to support traumatised children, adults, families and communities Understanding how the Solihull Approach model underpins all of the above.

To introduce the Start to Play resources and how they can be used to enhance opportunities for active play within childcare settings. Learning Objectives To build on learning from Early Movers training which emphasised the importance of physically active play in the early years To highlight practical ideas for maximising physically active play opportunities for children aged 0-5 in childcare settings To familiarise participants with Start to Play resources. Course Content Start to Play is a resource package developed by the Youth Sport Trust to encourage play and physical activity opportunities for children aged 0-5 years. Start to Play complements and supports the Early Years Curriculum, providing high quality learning opportunities across all six areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development Physical Development Communication, Language and Literacy Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy Knowledge and Understanding of the World. This course will give participants the opportunity to become familiar with the ethos of Start to Play through engaging in activities outlined in the resources.! Each setting will receive a set of Start to Play resources.
