2 EMPOWER AND SUSTAIN (U) FINANCIAL YEAR 2017 ANNUAL REPORT There were great achievements realized in the financial year There has been increase in the level of participation, implementation and supervision of development activities by the children, youth and women in particular. This reflects a community that is interdependent and empowered to steer its own development. We are grateful to all the beneficiary community, staff, local leaders, district leaders, NGO bodies and other stake holders who contributed tremendously in transforming the lives of the communities in which we serve. The program has continuously realized key transformational development indicators in a quest to achieve its overall goal for quality of life for all. The passion fruit project is the main funding source for Empower and Sustain Uganda as a Community Based Organization. The founders of this organization saw it befitting to preach the message of empowering lives through skills that can sustain one s life time. And having a community based organization that support itself sustainably was a step in the right direction. The Project employs five full time staff and fifteen part time staff. The project now sits on twenty three acres of land in Bamunanika Sub County. We were able to raise profits of 336 million shillings through the sale of passion fruits and trainings conducted at the passion fruit project site. A total of 333 people (143 female and 190 male) were trained on the violence against women over the period. It was also noted that there were are men who were abused by women in their homes. Many of them never reported such cases in fear of being shamed as not being male enough. The training was done in close collaboration with the Uganda Police Family unit and the Probation offices of the three district of Wakiso, Luweero and Nakaseke. Door to door campaigns on violence against women were also conducted. These proved to be effective as couples were counseled in a bid to cultivate family stability. This has led to an increase in family support networks with a community watch team that seeks to nature peace among families and community. There were also a total of 6 mass children rights campaigns that were conducted in the three districts were we operate from. These were also done in close collaboration with the Uganda Police and the District probation office. The beauty in these campaigns was that they were child led campaigns with children speaking out for themselves. This was a reflection of empowered children actively involved as agents of transformation in the communities in which they live. A total of 20 schools were reached in all these districts. Radio talk shows also featured with children taking an active role in airing their views and responding to issues as raised. Issue of child mothers and defilement cases appeared as recurrent. By the end of the financial year, reported cases of defilement had drastically reduced. This was a positive indicator that community is responding to the outcry of the children. The program continued to empower child mothers and unprivileged women and the disabled with skills in computer (57 trained), tailoring/design (41 trained), hair dress (85 trained) and

3 catering (77 trained). 11 of those trained were persons with disability. Most of this trainings are community led and the organization employs a model whereby those who have graduated with outstanding skills, are facilitated to train other beneficiaries in the same. This has resulted into interdependent and empowered communities and an increase in sense of responsibility for others with mutual reciprocal assistance. Many of the graduates in these training programs are empowered with skills to economically sustain themselves. Community trainings on imparting skills in passion fruit growing, poultry, piggery and goat rearing were done in close cooperation with district agricultural extension officers. 213(113 female, 100 male) received training in passion fruit growing, 143(80 female, 63male) were trained in piggery and 137(96 female, 41 male) received skills in goat rearing. They also received skills on starting your own business. 13 of the trainees were persons with disability. The program through government support was able to furnish participants with passion fruit seedlings, kroiler hens, goats and pigs. These livelihood projects have seen an increase in the number of families with sustainable livelihood projects and improved capacity to manage their finances. A total of 19 shallow wells were sank in 19 households over the period. The organization utilizes a model where neighbors are encouraged to come together and support in sinking such wells. This increase in family support networks has also resulted into interdependent and empowered communities that seek to work and support each other for a good cause. The time taken to access clean water has reduced and there has also been a drastic reduction in water borne diseases as reflected in the health facility disease tracking log books. A total of 20 schools were also supported with plastic water tanks. 13 trainings on disease prevention where conducted in the three districts. A total of 312 (158 female, 154male) were empowered with knowledge and skills of disease prevention. Sanitation campaigns and competitions were done in the three districts. Households were required to have a pit latrine with a water washing point, enclosed bathing room, dish drying rack and waste dispose pits. Winners were awarded blankets, mattresses, bed sheets, basins and jerricans. The spirit of cleanliness that was ignited has been maintained commendably. Community participation has increase as seen in the interest reflected when they are collecting locally available materials to realize a complete construction of these wells. A total of 43 LGBTQIs and 24 persons with disability were supported with blankets, mattresses, mosquito treated bed nets, cooking utensils and farming tools. This was done to boost their level of involvement in food production. They were also given first aid kits to manage illnesses in the process of accessing health care from government health facilities. The staff who had been trained on LGBTQI issues by the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) conducted trainings in 11 government supported health centers on the rights of LGBTQIs. A total of 24 health workers received training. This has led to an increase in support for LGBTQIs whenever they have approached government health centers for treatment. There were 18 HIV/AIDS counselling and malaria testing campaigns that were conducted over the period. These were done in hard to reach areas especially those that were far distanced from government health facilities. These campaigns were done in close collaboration with government

4 health workers. A total of 379 people were tested on HIV/AIDS and malaria. Those affected were referred to the appropriate health center fours to be registered for treatment while those with malaria were given first line treatment. A healthy community helps in breeding communities that are productive and self-sustained. The program has had 6 advocacy meetings with local and district leaders in a bid to lobby for policies that help to support the rights of LGBTQIs, the disabled and children. This was done in close collaboration with the community. Children and youth were involved in these meetings that sought to influence public policy and decision making. Dialogue is an ongoing process and seeks to develop interdependent and empowered institutions and communities. The organization will always seek to support communities in realizing policies and laws that favor the marginalized.
