2 START Training Module Kit The START (Simple Triage And Rapid Treatment) Training program teaches rescuers a simple triage and rapid treatment system that enables them to do the most good for the most victims in the shortest amount of time. The START system features three simple assessment techniques to identify, prioritize, and provide basic stabilization measures for each victim in ONE MINUTE OR LESS. By quickly identifying the victims at greatest risk of early death, START saves lives and wins the RACE AGAINST TIME. The START Training Package Includes: START Instructor s Manual START Triage Tags START Flowchart Cards START Race Against Time Training Media (DVD) 8 Training modules have been given to the Southern Colorado RETAC Region. The SCRETAC Board then placed these modules in the following locations: 1 to each County EMS Council, 1 to Pueblo Community College, 1 to St. Mary Corwin Hospital EMS Training Dept. and 1 for SCRETAC training library. Please utilize these for your MCI drills and triage training. Also coming soon we will have Triage Tags to distribute to the 5 counties. Special thanks goes to HRSA and Colorado Rural Health Center for supporting the EMTS system & providing funding to purchase the training modules. 3 The Western RETAC hosted the Statewide Quarterly RETAC Forum on June 4 and 5 in Montrose and included a dynamic presentation on methamphetamines presented by Lynn Riemer, North Metro Task Force, and Kell Hulsey, a sergeant with the Greeley Police Department. This special program included the history of meth use and abuse, the effect methamphetamine has on the user and society, hazards associated with the manufacture of meth and the chemicals involved, as well as impacts to first responders upon entering suspected meth labs or coming into contact with users. Lynn and Kell provided a detailed demonstration on the hazards of the chemicals and the contamination left behind from manufacturing, as well as identifying and understanding meth users and meth labs. The session was well-received and eye opening for many attendees. Methamphetamine isn t just a drug; its manufacturing breeds toxic waste and deadly vapors. Consumption or even accidental contact can cause everything from extreme rashes to violent and paranoid behavior. Meth is the fastest growing drug threat and the most prevalent synthetic drug in the United States. The problem of meth is complex and will require all aspects of society to provide an appropriate response. Training and education are key, and Lynn and Kell can help. Through their company, Meth Heads, Inc., this epidemic has been brought to the public s doorstep. Training provides tools to be better informed and to have the opportunity to help those who have become victims to this drug. Lynn and Kell have provided training to more than 40,000 professionals and more than 25,000 school children over the last six years. They provide a wide range of trainings to professionals, communities, businesses, school administration and teachers, school children and the general public. They can provide customized programs that are pertinent to your organization s training goals, where you want, when you want. They currently have a contract with the State of Colorado Department of Human Services to provide drug training for everyone that goes into homes as part of their daily job duties. They also provide the DOT Reasonable Suspicion drug training for supervisors on how to recognize drug use and abuse. These are the protocols that have been adopted as the Southern Colorado RETAC Regional protocols and are in use by many agencies throughout the region. It s a great review and an avenue to bring forth new ideas and technology. We will also identify and discuss current EMS trends. In years past this has been an interesting and informative meeting. The EMS Safety Summit conference will provide you with the latest technology in ambulance safety products and you will hear from various notable speakers on the subject of safety in EMS. SCRETAC will pay hotel room for one night. (value of $139.00) for a maximum of 20 people. There is no registration fee for this class. Hotel incidentals, meals and travel expenses to and from the conference are your responsibility. We encourage participation from all counties within the SCRETAC region which include: Pueblo, Las Animas, Fremont, Custer and Huerfano. Currently there are 12 vacancies open for scholarships. For a scholarship request form contact Theresa at the SCRETAC office. Violent Patient Management Course You re called to a scene and the patient is combative and uncooperative. Do you know any tricks to calm the situation and take control? SCRETAC sponsored 13 people in the VPM Train the Trainer course. As of July every County within the Southern Colorado RETAC (Custer, Las Animas, Fremont, Pueblo, and Huerfano) has access to someone that is certified to teach a Violent Patient Management Course.
