4 SECTION 1 Welcome Sandwell Safeguarding Children Board (SSCB) has a range of roles and statutory functions including the training of persons who work with children or in services affecting the safety and welfare of children; SSCB communicates to persons and bodies the need to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, raising awareness of how this can best be done and encouraging them to do so. This catalogue is aimed at professionals working in all organisations involving children, young people and their families. The Learning & Development sub group devised the catalogue to support locally and regionally identified needs and priorities identified from case file audits, local (as well as national) serious case reviews, child death reviews, learning reviews and key inspection findings. Evaluation You will be asked to complete an evaluation form after each course, which assists in planning future events and ensures we meet our objectives and the needs of the children s workforce in Sandwell. You and your line manager will be asked to participate in evaluating the impact of training on practice. This will entail completing an online survey and an impact questionnaire three-six months post training. Staff Groupings: Provides guidance for line managers to determine the levels of competency that need to be achieved based on the statutory guidance The Learning and Development Course Catalogue will give guidance on which courses are appropriate for which group (these are recommendation only). Training should be accessed following discussion with your line manager to ascertain if aims/outcomes of courses meet with the expectations of you in your role and if you meet the prior learning/experience requirements. See page 5 for staff groupings. Costs Black Country professionals can access training free of charge Non-attendance will incur a charge of 30 Manager approval We have now removed the manager approval step from our booking system, based on users feedback It will now be assumed that users booking onto courses have informed and got approval from their managers Certificates It is your responsibility to download your certificate from Learning pool following successful completion of training. Please note: Refreshments are no longer provided on training courses,. At Coneygre there is no canteen to buy food, please ensure you take your own lunch along for full day courses. 4

5 SECTION 1 Regional Training Programme Topic Based Training Courses are offered in Sandwell via our neighbouring boards which has increased the variety of courses. Safeguarding Children & Young People Module 1 There is no statutory obligation for module one safeguarding awareness training to be provided by SCB s. We can provide a list to organisations of training providers who have been quality assured and approved by the SSCB who can deliver this training to single agencies. lscb_sandwell@sandwell.gov.uk to request a copy of the list; alternatively it can be found on the SSCB website. Online safeguarding awareness training is an alternative option that can be used instead of commissioning a face to face training session, this has been approved by the SSCB and is available through Artemis e-learning, please see page 43. Non-attendance charging All LSCBs (Dudley, Wolverhampton and Sandwell) will implement the same nonattendance charging policy. The charge will be 30 per delegate per day for nonattendance on training. Cancellations are to be made via your Learning Pool account at least five working days in advance of a course to ensure you are not charged a non-attendance fee, unless you can arrange for another representative from your service area to attend in your place. Booking Process The booking process in the first instance will remain the same for all training; if you are from a Sandwell organisation you will still need to book on to courses via learning pool. 6 SECTION 1 Learners Agreement Expectations for SSCB training delegates Supervision with Manager Prior to booking the training, I will discuss and agree the training with my line manager (it will be assumed that managers are aware their staff members have booked. In the event of nonattendance the organisation will be charge a non-attendance fee of 30) I will check that the aims and objectives are suitable for my role I will feed back learning to my manager and team Special Requirements I will inform Sandwell SCB of any special requirements and needs that might reasonably be supported Attendance, Punctuality & Course Fees I will be punctual, arriving 15 minutes prior to the course start time for registration. I will not be admitted into a training course if I am 30 minutes late or more. If I do not attend a confirmed course, I will be charged a 30 non-attendance fee. If I am turned away due to lateness, I will be charged a 30 non-attendance fee. I will attend the full day, and will not be issued a certificate if I leave early. Respect, Safety & Integrity I will treat my fellow delegates and trainers with respect and behave with integrity I will model anti-discriminatory practice throughout the session I will respect the facilitators and delegates views, opinions and diversity Confidentiality I will maintain confidentiality regarding cases discussed and delegates personal disclosures during training If I or the facilitators have concerns about poor practice, or the wellbeing of children or young people, I understand that confidentiality will be broken, but efforts will be made to include those concerned Evaluation & Quality Assurance I will complete the Training Evaluation (a) form on the day, (b) Survey Monkey three months, after training and if selected (c) telephone impact analysis questionnaire, delegate and line manager. 6

7 SECTION 1 Trainers Agreement Expectations for SSCB facilitators of training Training Materials I will develop, store and update training materials as appropriate, incorporating feedback and new research /guidance I will include recommended guidance and relevant local information in the training, including key learning from Serious Case Reviews I will share course materials with Sandwell LSCB for quality assurance purposes Sandwell LSCB and the training subgroup may suggest changes to the training I will prepare and organise my training materials prior to the course and team Special Requirements I will endeavour to support delegates special requirements I will inform Sandwell SCB if I have special requirements Attendance & Punctuality Courses register promptly 15 minutes prior to start time and start punctually Any delegates who arrive 30 minutes after the start time will not be admitted; those leaving early will not be issued certificates of attendance Respect, Safety & Integrity I will maintain the ground rules set out at the beginning of the day I will maintain professionalism and appropriate boundaries I will model anti-discriminatory practice and behave with integrity I will gently challenge anyone who does not behave with respect and professionalism Respect, Safety & Integrity I will remind delegates about confidentiality regarding cases and personal disclosures If I have concerns about poor practice, the wellbeing or safety of children or young people, vulnerable adults, or any individual, I will break confidentiality and share my concerns with the SSCB and other appropriate services. Efforts will be made to include the delegate(s) concerned so that they are aware of matters being taken further Evaluation & Quality Assurance I will compile the Training Evaluation Forms and register and complete the Facilitator Evaluation All Sandwell LSCB courses will be quality assured and courses may be observed 7

9 SECTION 2 Pre- course Knowledge for all Training Please be aware there is no statutory requirement for Safeguarding Boards to deliver basic or awareness raising training courses therefore it is expected that all delegates will have completed these courses within their agencies prior to accessing any of the courses in this catalogue. At a minimum all delegates must have completed Safeguarding Level 1. There is a list of providers who have been quality assured by SSCB L&D Sub Group to deliver this training, to request a copy of this list please lscb_sandwell@sandwell.gov.uk (this course will not be funded by SSCB). 15 SECTION 3 Learning from Serious Case Reviews Audience: Groups 2, 3 & 4 Book now: Aims: To improve multi agency practice and service delivery by examining lessons learnt to safeguard children as highlighted in Serious Case Reviews. 16 SECTION 3 Core Working Together - Level 3 Safeguarding Children & Young People Audience: This course is primarily for those professionals (statutory and voluntary) who either work predominately or who have regular contact with children and young people; for those who hold particular responsibilities for safeguarding and for those who hold positions as professional advisors. (previously Safeguarding Children & Young People Module 3 course) Book now: Aims: To enable participants to develop their knowledge, skills and ability to work together with other agencies to safeguard children and young people To ensure that participants are aware of information sharing, the referral Processes Learning Outcomes: Be aware of their roles and responsibilities for safeguarding children and young People Be aware of other interagency roles and responsibilities for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children Understand and contribute towards the processes outlined in What to do if you re worried a child is being abused i.e. Understand how to make a referral and the possible outcome of this referral Consider key area of safeguarding practice including information sharing; consent and confidentiality; escalation. 26 SECTION 3 Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent Audience: Groups 2,3 & 4 Aim To have a clearer idea of the role that vulnerabilities and grievances can play in radicalization and how they can be exploited by radicalizers using terrorist ideology. Learning Outcomes Have a better understanding of the Prevent strategy and your role within it and how to involve safeguarding. Aim: The Understanding Extremisms Training will explore and discuss issues relating to the ideology of Global Jihadism and the Far Right. Delegates should already have undertaken previous domestic abuse training e.g. Domestic Violence & Abuse Level 1 /2 Learning outcomes: Understand key lessons from local Domestic Homicide Reviews Understand the pattern of coercive control in domestic violence and abuse and its impact upon parenting. Understand the increased risks associated with ending a violent relationship and the factors that make it dangerous for victims to leave. Be familiar with the tactics used by domestic violence abusers to prevent help seeking by a non-abusing parent.
