5 June, 2016 Volume 46, Issue 6 THE SEEDLING We hear so much about emotional sobriety in A.A. meetings, and I often wonder if the average member really understands where this all fits in. Most normal people go through life by experiencing the good and the bad and end up with a life that is acceptable to them. They don t seem to be plagued by the things the alcoholics live with every day of their lives. Most of our problems are caused by our misguided instincts when we let them go far beyond their intended purpose. When these behaviors/habits are allowed to persist and the consequences of them are masked by alcohol, we never mature emotionally and spend most of our efforts trying to rationalize these behaviors to the point that we start believing our own lies. Our behavior, when drinking, appears to be more of a problem than the alcoholism that causes it. The more we drink the more irresponsible we become as our disease progresses, and the harder it is to explain these behaviors away. To the outside world it appears that the drinking is the problem and we can t deny that because drinking is a problem. We finally throw in the towel and show up in the A.A. meetings where we learn that alcoholism stems from deeper rooted emotional problems, and that we can live a somewhat normal life if we are willing to take the steps of the program, in their full implication, without any reservations. We can lead a somewhat normal life, but we can never be normal. We can never drink normally because the tolerance for alcohol or any other mind altering drug is gone and the idea that we will ever regain control has to be smashed. We are like men who have lost their legs, they never grow new ones. It s hard for the struggling alcoholic to accept this truth but we must if we are to any chance of being happy. We are scarred on the inside and that scarring never goes away. It can be overcome by practicing the principles of the program in their entirety but it can only be arrested, never cured. Let s say we plant a seedling and shortly after it has taken root, it is trampled and bent over onto the ground. It may still survive if it receives water and nourishment. If it is not straightened up immediately and if it is allowed to grow crooked, it will still grow into an adult tree but it will never be straight like the other trees around it. We can prune it and trim it and decorate it, and make it look good, but it will always be damaged. Our sobriety is contingent upon the maintenance of our spiritual condition. We can live a life that is somewhat normal and sometimes a much happier life than if we had never became an alcoholic in the first place provided, we accept our condition and, all of its ramifications, and are willing to embrace the solution. Sometimes the crookedness of a tree is what gives it character. I hope I never get complacent about my spiritual development and I hope I never stop growing. Rick R. 5

10 June, 2016 Volume 46, Issue 5 NATIONAL CLERGY CONFERENCE ON ALCOHOLISM THE "BLUE BOOK", Vol. 12, , 1960 Alcoholics Anonymous continued from May 6Q - What happened to your sponsor, Ebby? 6A - It was Ebby who brought me the message that saved my life and uncounted thousands of others. Because of gratitude and old friendship, my wife Lois and I invited Ebby to live at our home shortly after I sobered up. The son of a well-to-do family in Albany, he had never learned any profession so he was broke and had to begin all over. These were difficult circumstances, naturally. Ebby stayed with us something like a year and a half. Being intent on getting reestablished in life, he took little interest in helping other alcoholics. Little by little, he commenced the rationalization we have seen so often. He began to say that if he had the right romance and the right job then things would be okay. At length, he fell by the wayside. He would not mind if I tell this - it is a part of his story today. For many years, my old friend Ebby was on the wagon and off. Sometimes he could stay sober for a year or more. He tried living with Lois and me for another considerable period but apparently this was of no help. Maybe we actually hindered him. As A.A. began to grow his position became difficult. For a long time things went from bad to worse. About six years ago the groups down in Texas decided to try their hand. Ebby was shipped non-stop to Dallas and placed in an A.A. drying out place. In these new surroundings in Texas, far from his old failures, he has made a splendid recovery. Excepting for one slip which occurred about a year after his arrival down there he has been bone dry ever since. This is one of the deepest satisfactions that has ever come to me since A.A. started and many another A.A. can say the same. (N.C.C.A. 'Blue Book,' Vol.12, 1960) We have emphasized willingness as being indispensable. Are we now ready to let God remove from us all the things which we have admitted are objectionable? Can He now take them all, everyone? If we still cling to something we will not let go, we ask God to help us be willing. -A.A. Big Book p.76 10

14 June, 2016 Volume 46, Issue 5 Acceptance Acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed it is because I find some person, place, thing, or situation-- some fact of my life -- unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God's world by mistake. Reprinted from Alcoholics Anonymous, Page 417, with permission of A.A. World Services, Inc. Do you know ASL (American Sign Language) or know of anyone who does, who may also want to be of service to our groups? Dana Point 9 years Dawn M. Laguna Hills 22 years Help keep the doors of A.A. open so that new members may receive the same help so many of us have already received. Members customarily contribute $1, $2 or even $5 for each year of sobriety others may give a penny or nickel a day for each day of sobriety yours or someone else s. We will help celebrate by publishing their name and years of sobriety in the Lifeline. 15 June, 2016 Volume 46, Issue 6 Alcoholics Anonymous, how may we help you? CALL FORWARDING: The call forwarding program instituted by Orange County Central Office insures that our help line phones are answered by volunteers 24/7. During hours when the Central Office is closed, calls to the Central Office are forwarded to a call forwarding volunteer s home or cell phone, where the volunteer answers the calls just as if he or she were sitting in the Central Office. This service allows the Central Office to realize a significant cost saving because we do not need to contract with a phone answering service. Even more vital, when a call is placed to Alcoholics Anonymous in Orange County, the caller will be talking to an Alcoholics Anonymous member not a phone service! This truly is frontline 12 th Step work and we would appreciate any time you can give. SHIFTS: Monday Friday shifts are: 6am 9am 6pm 9pm 9pm 6am Saturday and Holiday shifts: 6am 9am 1pm 4pm 4pm 7pm 7pm 10pm 10pm 6am Sundays 6am 10am 10am 2pm 2pm 6pm 6pm 10pm 10pm 6am VOLUNTEERING: In order to volunteer for this service it is suggested that you have two years of sobriety. Please arrange with the Central Office Manager in Santa Ana (714) or the Satellite Office Manager in Mission Viejo (949) for a brief orientation session which will be held at one of the offices.
