3 3 Who wrote our Serenity Prayer? But despite years of research by numerous individuals, the exact origin of the prayer is shrouded in overlays of history, even mystery. Moreover, every time a researcher appears to uncover the definitive source, another one crops up to refute the former's claim, at the same time that it raises new, intriguing facts. What is undisputed is the claim of authorship by the theologian Dr. Rheinhold Niebuhr, who recounted to interviewers on several occasions that he had written the prayer as a "tag line" to a sermon he had delivered on Practical Christianity. Yet even Dr. Niebuhr added at least a touch of doubt to his claim, when he told one interviewer, "Of course, it may have been spooking around for years, even centuries, but I don't think so. I honestly do believe that I wrote it myself.".. A Pre-Fifth Step Prayer: God, please help me to complete my housecleaning by admitting to another human being the exact nature of my wrongs. Please remove any fears I have about this step and show me how completion of it will remove my egotism and fear. Help me to see how this step builds my character through humility, fearlessness and honesty. Direct me to the right person who will keep my confidence and fully understand and approve what I am driving at. Then help me to pocket my pride and go to it, illuminating every twist of character, every dark cranny of the past so I may complete this step and begin to feel near to you." (72:1, 72:2, 73:0, 74:2, 75:2) The Promises associated with Step 5 from the Big Book of AA, p 75 1.Once we have taken this step withholding nothing, we are delighted. 2.We can look the world in the eye 3.We can be along at perfect peace and ease. 4.Our fears fall from us.. 5 We begin to fear the nearness of our creator 6. We may have had certain spiritual beliefs, but now we begin to have a spiritual experience. 7. The feeling that the drink problem has disappeared will often come strongly 8. We feel we are on the Broad Highway, walking hand in hand with the Spirit of the universe 9. Carefully reading the the first five proposals, we ask if we have omitted anything, for 4 we are building an arch through which we will walk a free man at last.
