For us, if we neglect those who are still sick, there is unremitting danger to our own lives and sanity. Under these compulsions of self-preservation, duty and love, it is not strange that our Society has concluded that it has but one high mission---to carry the AA message to those who don t know there is a way out. TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, P 151 Healthy AA Groups contribute to our Intergroup, District, Area, and World Services. Percentages vary and suggestions can be found in AA pamphlets. The pamphlet, Self-Support: Where Money and Spirituality Mix, suggests the following common split after expenses: Area Fellowship Intergroup PO Box %, MD Maryland General Service District Willow Dale Court 10%, MD Maryland General Service, Inc. PO Box % Baltimore, MD General Service Office PO Box % Grand Central Station New York, NY Men on a mission Dr. Bob lapses into drinking again, but quickly recovers. The day widely known as the date of Dr. Bob s last drink, June 10, 1935, is celebrated as the founding date of Alcoholics Anonymous. Dr. Bob and Bill spend hours working out the best approach to helping alcoholics, a group known to be averse to taking directions. Realizing that thinking of sobriety for a day at a time makes it seem more achievable than facing a lifetime of struggle, they hit on the twenty-four hour concept. An A.A. group can bind itself to no one. In addition to being a sober member of Alcoholic Anonymous, I am a dues-paying member of the Atlantic Club. My A.A. home group holds its meetings at the Club.

6 An A.A. group can bind itself to no one. In addition to being a sober member of Alcoholic Anonymous, I am a dues-paying member of the Atlantic Club. My A.A. home group holds its meetings at the Club. So does our local A.A. intergroup and district. The intergroup maintains a bookstore on Atlantic Club premises. Many of our A.A. workshops and events take place at the Club. I support a lot of the Atlantic Club s social, fellowship, and fundraising activities. I frequently attend other A.A. meetings, read, write, meet people, do Step work, eat, exercise, play guitar, and even watch television there. The Club plays a big role in my daily life as a sober member of A.A. I am very grateful that we have such a wonderful aid to sobriety in our community. I am careful, though, to keep my A.A. membership and my club membership separate. The primary purpose of Alcoholics Anonymous is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. The Atlantic Club Inc. is a non-profit service organization dedicated to supporting programs and activities by helping individuals in recovery and those trying to achieve sobriety and to stay clean. However related they might appear, these are two very different things. That is why my home group, intergroup, district, intergroup bookstore, and every A.A. meeting, workshop, and activity held at the Atlantic Club pays rent for using the facility and strives to be self-supporting. Tradition Nine reminds us that our intergroup and other service committees are responsible to all A.A. groups and members, while a club is responsible chiefly to its dues-paying members and to groups that rent space from the club. The Atlantic Club is a wonderful complement to sobriety and to Alcoholics Anonymous, but it is not A.A. In its original long form, Tradition Six reads: Problems of money, property, and authority may easily divert us from our primary spiritual aim. We think, therefore, that any considerable property of genuine use to A.A. should be separately incorporated and managed, thus dividing the material from the spiritual. An A.A. group, as such, should never go into business. Secondary aids to A.A., such as clubs or hospitals which require much property or administration, ought to be incorporated and so set apart that, if necessary, they can be freely discarded by the groups. Hence such facilities ought not to use the A.A. name. Their management should be the sole responsibility of those people who financially support them. For clubs, A.A. managers are usually preferred. But hospitals, as well as other places of recuperation, ought to be well outside A.A. -- and medically supervised. While an A.A. group may cooperate with anyone, such cooperation ought never to go so far as affiliation or endorsement, actual or implied. An A.A. group can bind itself to no one. A.A. groups cannot afford to be diverted from our primary spiritual aim of helping other alcoholics. While cooperation with the Atlantic Club is a wonderful and desirable thing, we, as Alcoholics Anonymous groups and service committees, can never bind ourselves to the Club or to any other outside enterprise. Our autonomy must be kept intact. No affiliation or endorsement, actual or even implied, can ever take place. To do so could jeopardize the very existence of A.A., as learned from the experience of the Washingtonian movement in the mid-1800s. Once that group became involved in outside issues, it lost all effectiveness in helping alcoholics and disappeared completely. That is a compelling motivation for never publishing non-a.a. events in this A.A. newsletter. In the A.A. Guidelines on the Relationship Between A.A. and Clubs, compiled by our General Service Office from the shared experience of A.A. members in various service areas, it states clearly that a club is not A.A. and that Even though the group meets in a club that may be composed exclusively of A.A. members, and many members of the group may be club members, too, the relationship of the A.A. group itself to the club should be the same as it would be to a church, hospital, school, or other facility in which it might rent space for its meetings. It would be unthinkable for an A.A. newsletter to publish notices of church-sponsored events or school sports schedules. It should be equally abhorrent to any educated A.A. member who practices the spiritual principles of our Twelve Traditions to publish recovery club notices in a newsletter funded solely by A.A. member contributions.
