2 A message from Graeme Kelly, the CEO Winter is nearly over and we re starting to see signs of Spring. Some people lay low in Winter but we ve been working hard at Tipping. I hope you received your copy of the Tipping Strategic Plan. It outlines the future we want for Tipping. If you didn t get a copy or you would like to talk to me about it please contact me on or graeme.kelly@tipping.org.au I have enjoyed the snippets of the Olympics that I have been able to watch. I am looking forward to the Paralympics. Our founder E.W. (Bill) Tipping was a journalist. He wrote about the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 and again in Rome in What I love about sport is the way that it connects people from all: walks of life parts of the world. I think the AFL footy does the same thing on a more local level. Go Hawks! Page 2

5 National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) news The NDIS started in North East Melbourne on 1 July The North East area includes the local government areas of: Banyule Darebin Nillumbik Whittlesea Yarra. If you re in from any of these areas we hope your move to the NDIS is well underway. If you re in the North East Melbourne area and have any questions please contact the team at our Preston office on Our Ballarat office is also getting ready for the roll out. The Central Highlands will be next with a start date of 1 January Page 5

9 Deb and Pam step back in time Deb went to Ballarat with her support worker Pam. They enjoyed visiting Sovereign Hill an outdoor museum about life during the gold rush. The highlight for Deb was seeing Blood on the Southern Cross an amazing sound and light show. Deb and Pam also visited Kryal Castle Australia s only medieval theme park. Deb had a great time and is looking forward to future trips. Page 9

10 Visitors from afar On Thursday 11 August we showed some people from Israel our supported accommodation. They were from Israeli organisations that provide support services to people with disabilities. They were interested in visiting disability service providers in Victoria to learn more about: housing models how we support people with disabilities in Australia. We took the group to visit our supported accommodation in Oak Park part of the program to get younger people with disabilities out of nursing homes. They were able to meet residents and staff. We were happy to show them around and answer any questions they had. They were very interested in: the changes to government funding how the NDIS works how it affects our residents. Orti, Raj and Marion told them about: the control they have in their lives the choices they can make. Page 10

11 Daniel makes Swan Hill a safer place Daniel dreams of becoming a police officer, so his support worker Caleb recently took him to visit a police station. First Constable Ben Coloe from the Swan Hill Police Station met with Daniel to chat about what it s like being a police officer. Constable Coloe showed Daniel his police baton and pepper spray. Daniel showed him his drawings of police badges. Daniel was very happy to receive a police pen, ribbon, poster and a cardboard cut-out police car from Ben. We would like to thank First Constable Ben Coloe from the Swan Hill Police Station for his time. Daniel had a great time and enjoyed meeting his new police friends. Page 11

12 Client and family research Deakin Occupational Therapy students have done research with our client and family group about our services. They interviewed clients, families and some people who had left our services to find out: what works well where we could improve. Suggested areas for improvement: 1. Build positive communication between office-based staff and clients. 2. More training for direct support workers, especially for clients who have higher support needs. 3. Find out how happy clients and families who live in remote areas or regional centres are with our services. 4. Work together to set goals and make sure we review them. 5. Give office based staff options for keeping up to date with clients needs. 6. Letting clients know when office based staff change. Many of these things are being done already or we will start doing them soon. Page 12
