1 Membership Summer 2016 In this issue Annual Members Meeting Thursday 28 July Time to Change Pledge Governor Election Results CQC Inspection Deciding Together in Newcastle and Gateshead Since summer 2014 the local NHS has been asking people who use mental health services, their families, carers, mental health professionals and service providers for their views on how we can improve the way specialist mental health services are arranged in Gateshead and Newcastle. We have called this process Deciding Together. We held a listening exercise over the winter 2014/15 and this then led to a public consultation which launched on Thursday 12 November 2015, and ran for 13 weeks until 12 February The consultation put forward a range of different ways in which in-patient and community mental health services could be arranged. All the potential scenarios include changes to in-patient and community services, as well as steps to make it easier for service users and carers to get the support they need. Hundreds of people have given their views, and an independent organisation has analysed all the feedback we have received during the consultation process. This has been considered by the CCG and a decision about a preferred option was made at their meeting on 24th May Welcoming the Care Quality Commission to NTW The Trust will be welcoming over 80 inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to undertake a comprehensive inspection of our services. The CQC is the independent health and adult social care regulator. Their job is to check whether hospitals, care homes, GPs, dentists and other services are meeting national standards. The CQC will look at the quality and safety of the care we provide based on the things that matter to people. They will look at whether our services are: Safe Effective Caring Responsive to people s needs Well-led. Before inspection began, members of the public, service users and carers were invited to share their experiences of the care they have received from us. The outcome of our inspections will be reported in a future issue. If you would like more information about the process you can visit the CCG website involved

2 Trust Time to Change Pledge to end mental health stigma Chief Executive, John Lawlor, signed the Time to Change Employer Pledge on Wednesday 14 January 2016 and in doing so joined over 300 employers in England who are working to tackle mental health stigma and to help keep their staff well for work. Time to Change is a national mental health campaign, launched in 2009 by mental health charities MIND and Rethink with the objective of reducing health related stigma and discrimination. The Time to Change Employer pledge is an aspirational statement which indicates to employees, service users and the public that an organisation wants to take action to tackle the stigma and discrimination around mental health, focussing on the workplace in particular. John Lawlor said: Here at NTW we have made a commitment to actively ending mental health stigma. Mental ill health is common with one in four of us experiencing a mental health problem at some point in our lives. The social stigma attached to mental ill health and the discrimination people experience can make life more difficult. There are small things that each of us can do everyday to challenge stigma and I feel privileged to publicly sign the pledge. The pledge was signed in front of members of staff at NTW, as well as representatives from the mental health charity, Rethink. Ten years of care The Trust was ten years old on Friday 1 April 2016! John Lawlor said: Since taking up my post as Chief Executive it has been humbling to meet so many of our dedicated staff who are passionate about providing the best possible care to the people we serve. We have seen dramatic changes over the last ten years which have shaped the way in which services are provided, including the provision of state of the art facilities which have dramatically improved inpatient services. Over the last ten years no less than eight new buildings have been opened ranging from a specialist dementia care centre to a large 122 bed hospital. in the community have also seen dramatic changes with the introduction of new services such as Initial Response Teams which provide 24 hour access to urgent mental health care and treatment by calling a single access number. A number of new specialist services are now also in place such as a support service for veterans and a street triage service which works in partnership with Northumbria Police. John continues: Over the last ten years there have been radical changes throughout NTW which will give us a firm footing in our goal to provide the best care, delivered by the best people to achieve the best outcomes. 2

3 CEO Sleepout 2016 On Thursday 3 March John Lawlor and Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Finance, James Duncan joined others from across the North East for a night spent sleeping outdoors on the pitch at St James Park in Newcastle as part of CEO Sleepout Staff CEO Sleepout is a national charity set up to fight homelessness and poverty. The campaign is funded with money raised by executives who sleep outdoors for one night to raise sponsorship from their business contacts and friends. John explained: The CEO Sleepout campaign against poverty and homelessness is a great cause which we are proud to support. A report by Crisis, the national charity for homeless people, suggests that the prevalence of common mental health problems is over twice as high amongst the homeless population compared to the general population. It is therefore very important for us, as the region s mental health care provider, to highlight the care that is available to the homeless from organisations such as NTW while at the same time fundraising to help the good causes which also support them. John and James raised 1740 which will support a range of local charities that tackle homelessness issues, including our partner charities Changing Lives and Newcastle United Foundation. Funds will also be donated to Newcastle Food Bank and other charities supporting essential homeless services in the city. Dr Sarah Brown, Consultant Psychiatrist said: The team has worked together at a time of great challenge, bringing together adult and older people s services as an integrated team, to demonstrate that despite limited resources it is still possible to deliver a high quality liaison psychiatry service to nationally recognised standards. We could not have achieved this without the contribution from all team members and most importantly the support from our acute colleagues, patients and carers. Thank you everyone. 6 Service user Koestler Art Ceremony In March the Trust hosted the 4th Annual Koestler Award ceremony at Northgate Hospital which was attended by Sarah Grainger-Jones, Acting Director of the Koestler Trust. North Tyneside World Mental Health Day 2015 Banner Launch Service users and carers who attended the event on 9 October 2015 were asked to design a square describing what dignity meant to them. 25 squares were then gathered and made into the large banner displayed at the launch on 29 February at Segedunum in Wallsend. This was accompanied by a short film and presentation highlighting the very successful day back in October. Over 70 awards and certificates were presented to patients and four platinum awards were presented from the Koestler Trust s national competition. John Lawlor said: It has been a joy to bear witness to such incredible artwork and achievement. Art can be such a healing force and contribute to our feeling of wellbeing and it has been my privilege to meet our talented artists here today. Judge s comments about the artwork came from award winning artists such as Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller and Grammy Award winning musician Hot Chip. Quotes from service users on the day: People are "We must always more than their be open about mental health" mental health and wellbeing"... "Mental health is everyone s concern. We are all the same... we need a little help sometime" Jane Akhurst, Arts Project Manager at NTW spoke about the work of the charity Outside In who support and promote the work of artists who may find it difficult to otherwise access the art world. The project runs an online gallery and presents exhibitions throughout the UK and so far five patients from Northgate Hospital have had work displayed. If you would like to get involved in World Mental Health Day October 2016 celebrations by joining the steering group, donating funds, delivering workshops or information on the day, please contact Kath Boodhai kathleen.boodhai@twmuseums.org.uk" Newcastle Mental Health Day took place on Saturday 6th February at Grey s Monument.
