2 REC OV E RY Welcome Recovery is about people improving their health and wellbeing. Recovery also means people finding ways to live a meaningful life, with or without the on going symptoms of an illness or condition. Recovery is about people pursuing their individual, unique life goals, becoming an expert in their own self-care and finding a new sense of purpose in life. of supporting people in their recovery. The college offers educational courses and workshops which aim to help people improve their health and wellbeing. This includes courses in relation to a range of psychological, mental and physical health conditions. The courses are aimed at everyone to learn to improve their health and wellbeing, for those who use health services, care for someone who does or are a health professional. We all experience similar things and can learn from each other: everyone is a student. Recovery is a personal journey. The Recovery College can support you in this journey, and transform the way you see and cope with your health and wellbeing and understand it in a more positive way. 3 HEALTH and WELLBEING courses UNDERSTANDING courses The aim of our health and wellbeing courses is to enable you/those you support to have a healthier life and help recovery, personal growth and wellbeing. They can also provide activities which help emotional or physical wellbeing and teach you strategies to increase healthy living. Many of us experience physical or mental ill-health ourselves, know someone who does or care for someone who does. One in four of us experience a mental health problem at some time in our lives. Physical health conditions are also very common. Increasing our understanding of these conditions, understanding that our mind and body work together, and sharing our experiences and difficulties can be really important. Learning skills we can use to nurture and help improve our wellbeing and knowing how we can help and support a family member or friend can be really helpful. Our Understanding courses cover many areas where people can really learn to self-manage and to have a meaningful, rewarding life with or without symptoms of physical or mental health issues. Introduction to Recovery and Wellbeing Single 2 1 /2 hour workshop During this course we will talk about wellbeing and how it is connected to recovery. We will discuss what recovery means to you and how it is different for everyone, and learn about Recovery Colleges, how they are run and what they can offer. Wellbeing and Recovery for Carers 4 week course, 2 1 /2 hour sessions Looking after someone with a mental illness? Does it sometimes affect your work, social life, your health? In this course we promote students to learn how to: Keep themselves well when caring for someone in a crisis, or who is suicidal or self-harming Understand diagnoses - what are these illnesses and the medications that are prescribed? Feel equipped to cope with distress and high emotion and getting a balance between supporting and enabling independence and recovery Know their rights as a carer. This includes legislation, financial Understanding Medication During this course we will look at the most commonly prescribed psychiatric medications and examine their benefits and side-effects. We will talk about common issues relating to medication such as: whether it works; how much and when to take medication; mixing medications with other prescription medication and/or alcohol and illicit drugs and involving people who use services and carers in decisions about medication. Students will learn about the terms informed consent and capacity around decision-making about taking medication and we will discuss reasons why people stop taking medications or do not take what is prescribed. Dementia Information group (DIG) 6 week course, 1 1 /2 hour session During this course students will hear from different professionals, charities and people living with dementia. Students will be provided with the information needed to support someone with a diagnosis of dementia, including; what dementia is and treatment options; coping skills to deal with the emotional impact of dementia; and understanding behaviour. Students will find out more about helpful practical support, different voluntary sector organisations (Alzheimer s Society and Dementia Advice Service), and learn about the support Social Services can provide. We will hear from a solicitor about associated legal matters and support and personal budgets. think about how and when a Community Mental Health Team can support you and your family.

4 Understanding PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) 6 week course, 2 hour sessions During this course students will gain a better understanding of what PTSD and complex- PTSD are, and how this affects daily life. In helping the brain distinguish between the past and the present, we can learn how to cope/live with the symptoms. Despite having PTSD, a greater understanding can help us to make changes, leading to a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Week 1 - Introduction and Grounding Techniques Week 2 - What is PTSD and Complex PTSD Week 3 - Managing Wellbeing Week 4 - Managing Flashbacks and Triggers Week 5 - Managing Emotions and Thoughts Week 6 - Rebuilding Your Life Completion of a Support Plan is a requirement for the PTSD course. Understanding Bipolar Single 2 1 /2 hour workshop During this course we will discuss the causes of bipolar disorder and how it is diagnosed. We will look at how to live with Bipolar Disorder and what issues an individual with this diagnosis may face and talk about how you can support someone diagnosed with bipolar. Understanding Psychosis Single 2 hour workshop During this course we will look at what psychosis is and how it is diagnosed. We will discuss the various causes for psychosis and the issues someone who is diagnosed with psychosis can encounter. We will examine what help or treatments there are for psychosis, talk about what the long-term outlook for someone with a diagnosis of psychosis is, and teach students how you can help someone with psychosis. Understanding Adult ADHD Single 2 1 /2 hour workshop During this course we will look at what is ADHD, how it is assessed and diagnosed, treatment options and strategies that may help. We will discuss ADHD as it presents during childhood and leading into adulthood, the impact it may have on those diagnosed, families and wider networks. We will examine what help / treatment is available, as well as possible self-help strategies. Understanding Depression & Anxiety 3 weeks, 2 1 /2 hour sessions This is an interactive student workshop where you will learn through education and experiential exercises. During the workshop we will: Identify goals for personal development Explore how the connection between our thoughts, physical sensations and behaviours can influence our feelings Learn how to improve wellbeing through tolerating anxiety and lifting low mood An Introduction to Hoarding Disorder Provided jointly by the Mary Frances Trust and Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Hoarding has been popularised in recent times by various TV programmes. While sometimes misleading, these have done a good job of highlighting some of the difficulties that people with this problem can face and importantly helping people to realise they are not alone. The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to hoarding disorder for both people with this problem and their carers. It aims to help answer the questions am I a hoarder? and why do I hoard? I Heart Consent (for Women Only) Provided by Rape Crisis Surrey and Sussex (RCSAS) During this workshop students will explore the meaning of gender, and the impact that it has on their lives through a critical exploration of gender norms and expectations. Students will also explore their own understanding of consent and awareness of the myths surrounding sexual violence. The session also provides the opportunity for students to explore what a respectful relationship looks like alongside the concept of enthusiastic consent. At the heart of the session is a re-framing of the way that society views sexual violence and consent, with the aim of empowering women and survivors of sexual violence. Understanding Addictions 3 weeks, 2 hour sessions The Understanding Addictions course is co-developed and co-delivered by a professional in the field of addiction recovery together with someone with lived experience of addictions and recovery. The course aims to explain: How addiction works and possible causes. Addiction as a whole Diagnosis and recovery pathways from addiction.

5 Introduction to the Autistic Spectrum During this workshop we will begin to explore autism and the autistic spectrum, taking a look at the differing facets of this condition, and the effects these have on the individual on the autistic spectrum, giving a better understanding of the wide range of people and manifestations of what we call the autistic spectrum. In the workshop, we will also be sharing plenty of practical hints and tips to help each other to deal with the practicalities of living and thriving with autism. ASD Post Diagnostic Course 4 week course, 2 hour sessions This course is for individuals recently diagnosed with Autism or with a diagnosis in the past as well as their families and carers. This course is not suitable for people who are awaiting a formal diagnosis. The course will give an overview of what is autism, the history of the diagnosis and Surrey & Borders Partnership Foundation NHS Trust diagnostic process. The relationship between mental health issues will be discussed as well as opportunities to ask questions of the lead clinician. Occupational Therapy and sensory interventions will be explored and finally there will be a session on how to access social care, the support offered by the Surrey Branch and support available in the community. Managing Mental Health at Work 1 week course, 3 hour session This workshop promotes discussion around the benefits and perceived disadvantages of disclosing mental health issues at work. It looks at how to tell your employer/ colleagues about your mental health issues including whether to disclose when making job applications and attending interviews. The course considers your rights and responsibilities and looks at the employer s requirement to make reasonable adjustments. The workshop will look at what kinds of adjustments could be made and identifies practical support plus information and advice available to manage mental health in the workplace. Understanding Personality Disorders 3 week course, 2 hour sessions During this course students will gain a better understanding of personality and Personality Disorder and learn more about different types of Personality Disorder. Students will learn about its impact and about treatment for recovery. Self-management is something we all do. Learning skills to help you to reach your goals can be really important and are included in this section. Learning skills gives us a sense of being more in control of our lives and this can help our physical and mental wellbeing enormously. It helps us make the most of our lives. Confidence and Self-Esteem 6 weeks, 2 hour workshop The confidence and self-esteem course has been developed to support students who may have little experience and/or confidence in attending and participating in group work. This makes the group an ideal start for a student s journey within the Recovery College. The course supports students to develop skills which promote healthy confidence and self-esteem. Within the course students will explore themes of understanding what confidence and self-esteem means to them, think about and develop skills of conflict management and assertiveness, and test these skills out in practical ways during supportive role play and group exercises Sustaining Meaningful Relationships 6 weeks, 2 hour workshop During this course students will learn about building and maintaining healthy relationships. We will consider boundaries and communication within relationships and explore issues of trust, forgiveness and conflict management. Students will learn effective methods of communicating with others. SKILLS courses How to be More Confident and Assertive 5 week course, 2 hour sessions Provided by Worker s Educational Association The aim of this course is to identify how confidence is lost and gained and to plan practical steps to help build confidence. We will also look at what is meant by assertiveness and discuss techniques for remaining assertive in stressful situations. We will discuss and identify your skills and qualities and learning to talk about yourself in a positive way. Finally, we will look at the differences between assertive, aggressive and passive behaviours. Please note that as this course is run by Worker s Educational Association, you may be required to fill out additional enrolment and feedback forms when you attend the course.

6 Communication Skills for Carers Single 2 1 /2 hour workshop This is a Workshop for Carers of people experiencing mental health challenges. It can be difficult to communicate with those we care about who have mental health challenges because we may worry that we will make things worse, cause upset or offence or inadvertently trigger the person to relapse. If you are a Carer and would like to learn more about your communication style and build on your strengths then this is the workshop for you. We will be looking at what makes healthy communication and identifying skills to improve communication. There are some practical activities which are designed to explore common dynamics. Students learn about assertiveness and setting limits. There is a break during the workshop for Carers to meet each other informally. Stress Management Provided by Worker s Educational Association The aim of this workshop is to identify the causes and symptoms of stress and evaluate some different techniques for helping to manage stress. We will also be defining what stress is and the common symptoms and causes of stress and discussing different strategies for dealing with it. Discovering Self-Compassion 5 week course, 2 hour sessions This course will explore what compassion is and how this is the cornerstone for understanding and developing self-compassion. Students will learn some mindfulness skills, appreciating the value of living in the moment. The course will also explore the importance of acceptance and working with our experiences and symptoms rather than getting rid of them and how this can help to build our resilience. We suggest keeping a journal to review your progress, to collect thoughts and ideas, quotes and poems, whatever you choose, as well as enjoying the process of creativity which in itself promotes wellbeing. Moving on from Self-Harm 3 week course, 2 hour sessions This course aims to provide a better understanding of self-harm and what we can do to reduce it. With a focus on harm reduction and individual empowerment, each student will develop a plan to help them manage their situation and gain an understanding and insight into self-harm and what we can do to support ourselves as well as others. How to Motivate Yourself Using Behavioural Activation 5 week course, 1 1 /2 hour sessions During this course students will gain a better understanding of helpful and unhelpful behaviours that affect motivation levels and mood. Students will learn how to develop a hierarchy of behaviours to increase activity levels. They will also learn the role of avoidance in maintaining low motivation levels and how to overcome barriers to engaging in meaningful and helpful activities. Introduction to Crisis Planning Single 2 1 /2 hour workshop During this workshop you will gain a good understanding of the importance of having a Crisis Plan. You will have an increased awareness of recognising early signs and symptoms and have the opportunity to discuss helpful actions to take which will support your recovery journey. Recovery in ACTion 8 week course, 2 hour sessions Partnership NHS Foundation Trust This course is based on principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). During this course students will learn about the importance of leading a value-based life by thinking about what is really important to them in their life (values) and learn about the difference between acting on thoughts and acting on values. Students will learn about how to observe experiences through mindfulness, and learn about barriers to leading a value-driven life. Healthy Sleep Habits Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Getting a good night s sleep is important for our physical and mental wellbeing. What will I achieve by the end of the course? An understanding of what sleep is and the sleep cycle An improved ability to recognise what can prevent us from getting a good night s sleep and the impact of this on our wellbeing Practical strategies to develop good sleeping habits Please note that as this course is run by Worker s Educational Association, you may be required to fill out additional enrolment and feedback forms when you attend the course.

7 Relationships and Mental Health 1 week course, 3 hour session The aim of the course is to help people who use our services, their families, friends and others attending recovery college courses to explore the impact of mental illness on relationships. It aims to help attendees to recognise changes in roles and responsibilities and the challenge of negotiating changes during illness and recovery. It aims to help attendees to recognise unhelpful patterns of behaviour and/or communication that may develop. It aims to help develop an understanding of how relationships can be maintained, alongside episodes of illness. Suicide Prevention Training 4 week course, 2 hour sessions Suicide remains a very challenging topic to talk about. This course will help raise awareness of suicide and increase the skills of people who experience suicidal thoughts to keep themselves safe. The course aims to increase the confidence of those that care or work with someone experiencing suicidal thoughts, understanding the perspectives of the families, friends, carers and clinicians of those at risk of suicide. This course also hopes to challenge the stigma that can be a barrier to people who feel at risk of suicide from seeking help and support. Managing Intense Emotions 10 week course, 2 hour sessions During this course students will gain a better understanding of Borderline/Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder and the experiences of intense emotional reactions, and behaviours used to cope with these. Students will learn emotion and behaviour management skills, learn to more effectively communicate about emotions and behaviours, and gain skills that can be used immediately in day to day life. Identifying a Career That s Right for Me 2 weeks, 2 hour sessions During this workshop you will discover what your individual values are, why your values matter and how you can use your values to reshape your career path. You will then move on to (i) learning about the difference between talents, strengths and skills, and (ii) identifying your own talents, strengths and skills. The workshop ends by considering the value of knowing your strengths and skills. Coping Skills for Smoking Cessation 4 Weeks, 2 hour Workshop Provided by Specialist Smoking Cessation Advisors This is a 4 week rolling course for people who want to quit smoking. You are 4 times more likely to quit smoking with behavioural support and stop smoking medications than if you go it alone. Week 1 Distraction Techniques Week 2 Relaxation and Mindfulness Week 3 Breaking the Cycle Week 4 - Staying Smoke Free How will this benefit me? The ability to taste and smell improves Physical appearance improves - skin loses greyish colour Breathing becomes easier, bronchial tubes begin to relax and energy levels increase Stress levels may lower Risk of heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker Positive Changes to Improve Wellbeing 6 week course, 2 hour sessions During the course we will be looking at the importance of including activities that will provide balance to your lifestyle and improve your wellbeing. We will be looking at the principles of the Wheel of Wellbeing, what stops us from making changes and how to confidently set and work towards goals. For Employers, line managers, HR professionals, OH workers and senior leaders: Mental Health Awareness There will be a cost attached to this course. Please contact the Recovery College for more information. Single 6 hour workshop This workshop aims to increase knowledge of how to support employees who are living with a mental / physical health condition. This workshop is an introductory session to raise awareness of mental health. It is designed to give employers, Line managers, HR professionals, OH workers and senior leaders: An understanding of what mental health is and how to challenge stigma. A basic knowledge of some common mental health issues and the requirements for reasonable adjustments. An introduction to looking after your own mental health. Confidence to interact with someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue. Signposting to helpful resources.

8 CREATIVITY courses about the Recovery College Using creative methods such as art, drama and music can improve wellbeing and help us learn strategies to help ourselves. Exploring feelings, the enjoyment that comes from creative activities and tapping into memories stored through music can be very positive. Creative Writing Music for Wellbeing 6 week course, 2 hour sessions 4 week course, 75 minute sessions Creative writing can be a very powerful way During these sessions we will explore how of expressing ourselves and making sense of music is used in everyday life and link this things that can often be hard to unpick even in to increased wellbeing. We will discuss and our own minds. It can also find a way to share experience the health benefits of practical experiences with others that might otherwise music-making and support students to create be difficult. In this course, we aim to make it personal playlists and explore ways of using a fun way of reaching out in friendship, love them to support emotional wellbeing. and shared interests. For this course, all you will need to bring along is a pencil or pen. You won t be asked to read aloud at first if you don t want to, but we hope that by week six you will feel relaxed enough to share. Who can come to a Recovery College course? Courses are open to: People aged 18 and above who want to improve their health and wellbeing. Courses for young people aged year olds are being developed and will be advertised on a termly basis. People with physical and mental health conditions Family members and carers Staff working in voluntary and statutory organisations. Students may enrol in any course at the Recovery College. Some courses are aimed at people experiencing particular difficulties, but these are appropriate for anyone to attend. Where do courses take place? Courses are offered in a range of venues across Surrey. How much does a course cost? All courses are free unless a price is stated. Will I be able to attend a course if I had difficulties with learning at school? Yes! The courses are aimed at a range of students though some rely on reading and writing more than others. Please contact us to discuss your individual learning needs and see which courses may be most suitable. One of us can also help you to develop your own Individual Learning Plan to support you.

What happens if not enough people enrol onto a course? Unfortunately we can t run a course if there aren t enough attendees. We will inform you if this is the case with a course that you have booked onto. Who provides the courses? The Recovery College is a partnership arrangement involving a range of organisations such as the NHS, voluntary organisations, the local authority and existing colleges. Refer to course details to see which organisation provides each course. All courses are run either by Surrey & Borders Partnership Foundation NHS Trust or by staff from one of our partnership organisations. The courses are co-developed and co-delivered with How do I access the Recovery College/enrol on a course? You don t need to be referred to the Recovery College - it is open to everyone. To attend a course you must enrol to the college. It is not possible to turn up for a course without enrolling first. You will not be allowed to stay for the class if you have not enrolled. To enrol, you need to complete and return an enrolment form. You can request a form via text, , phone or you can write to us (see contact details below). 10 If you have experience of using Surrey and Borders s services, or supporting someone who uses their services, you might be interested in joining the Forum of Carers and people who Use Services (FoCUS). FoCUS is looking for new members to provide The Trust with feedback about the way the Trust do things and help to improve services. We hold public meetings two months out of three in various locations throughout Surrey and North East Hampshire. You can be reimbursed for your travel costs or we can arrange transport. In the third month FoCUS Representatives discuss issues raised at the public meetings with the Trust s Directors and Chief Executive.
