2 Coffee Mornings in local areas The Carers Coffee Mornings are a place to meet with other carers from your neighbourhood and have a chat over free refreshments. Each of the groups is run by one of our support workers who is there to provide advice and information. They run at; Hangleton Manor, Hangleton Valley Drive, Hove on the first Thursday of every month, (Contact Nicola) Emporium café, 88 London Road (near John s Camping shop) on the first Thursday of the month (Contact Catherine) The Wooden Belly (32 Egremont Place, opposite the arch entrance to Queens Park ) on the first Tuesday of the month, (Contact Emma) The Mayberry Garden Centre, 7-17 Old Shoreham Road Portslade BN41 1SP on the first Monday of the month 2pm- 3.30pm (Contact Sami) Saltdean Library (in the Lido building) on the second Tuesday of the month, Carers from Rottingdean, Ovingdean and Woodingdean are also very welcome to attend. (Contact Catherine) LGBTCarers BME Carers Current and former carers coffee morning We run specific events and activities for LGBT carers throughout the year. Please contact us (tel: ) to go on our BME Carers mailing list to receive information. Held every Thursday morning from at the Chapel Royal, North Street. Carers are welcome to turn up on the day.
3 Male Carers Group Cornerstone Carers Group Bereaved Carers Activities Stroke Carers Group Learning Disabilities Carers Meetings A chance for men looking after someone with an illness or disability to meet other male carers and join in a variety of regular activities (Contact a member of the Adult Carers Team) The Carers Centre and the Martlets Hospice, working together, offer a 6-week programme of sessions to people who are caring for someone with a life limiting illness such as Parkinson s Disease, heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, HIV or cancer. The next course will run in Spring Please call Sara on for more information. We are running a series of activities including singing and art workshops for carers who have been bereaved within the last year. Please call Sara or Liz on to find out more. Do you care for someone who has had a stroke? Would you like to meet with other carers and to access specialist information on stroke and carers services? We run a monthly group for stroke carers on the last Tuesday morning of the month from noon in a central location. Free refreshments are provided and transport is available for carers with mobility problems. Are you interested in finding out more about learning disability services in Brighton and Hove and in influencing how services are run? Would you like to meet other carers and enjoy a free lunch? The group is usually held on the first Friday of the month, 3pm-4.30pm, Activities

At Belbourne Court, Bread Street, Brighton Hove : every 4th Tuesday of the month from pm. At Sanders House,Ingram Crescent Bevendean Dementia Café, providing entertainment and support for people with dementia, carers, family/friends and health and social care professionals, runs on the first Wednesday of each month at The Community Hall, Norwich Drive, Lower Bevendean, BN2 4LA from 2-4pm. De-Cafe Hove: provides entertainment and support for people with dementia, carers, family/friends and health and social care professionals. The cafe runs every 4th Wednesday of the month, 5.00pm to 7.00pm. At Dyke Road Park Café Groups for Carers of people with substance misuse difficulties Lunch Positive Contact the Alzheimer s Society on for more information Patched run 2 groups for carers of people with substance misuse issues: East Brighton Recovery Centre, 1 Whitehawk Way, Brighton BN2 5NP: fortnightly on Wednesdays The Drive Hove: fortnightly on Mondays pm Contact Patched on for more information. Helpline Lunch Positive is a weekly lunch club for people affected by HIV, their carers and supporters. It runs every Friday from 12 noon until 2.30pm at The Community Hall, Dorset Gardens Methodist Church. Contact or visit the website for information on how to join.
5 The Carers Garden Legal Surgeries Other free legal help This is an allotment space which is open to carers and people who are no longer caring due to bereavement or because the person they care for has gone into a rest or nursing home. People can sit and have a chat and cup of tea, take part in light gardening activities such as sowing seeds, or just sit and enjoy the panoramic views of the sea and countryside. The allotment is at the end of Beresford Road behind the Royal Sussex County Hospital and carers meet there on Thursdays from 11-2pm. If you would like to get involved in this venture please contact Sara at The Carers Centre. Do you need free legal advice? The Carers Centre provides free half-hour sessions with local solicitors experienced in issues such as charging for home care/rest & nursing home placements & other Council services, NHS Continuing Care funding, Wills and Trusts, Inheritance Tax Planning, Powers of Attorney and the Mental Capacity Act. Please call a member of the Adult Carers Team for dates and to book a place. Immigration Advice Brighton Voices in Exile can advise on a wide range of issues including applications for asylum, family reunion applications, applications for leave to enter/remain and applications for citizenship. Contact or drop-in on Tuesday mornings at St Mary Magdalene Community Centre, Upper North Street, Brighton BN1 3FH The Community Care Advice and Litigation Service at BHT Advice, Queens Road can provide advice on a broad range of social care issues to those eligible for legal aid. Telephone BHT Advice on Age UK Brighton hold free 30 minute Will Clinics every Thursday 2-4pm (by appointment only). These are for people 50+ who have limited means. Phone Information and Advice at Age UK Brighton (720603) for an appointment Volunteer for us We have a number of volunteer opportunities with the Carers Centre. These include helping to pack envelopes
6 for mail outs (along with tea and cakes), or driving young carers to events. Other Sources Of Support Relaxation/Meditation The Brighton Buddhist Centre, 17 Tichbourne Street runs a free lunchtime drop-in class weekly on Wednesdays 1-2pm. Carers are also welcome to attend their weekly Thursday lunchtime class pm free of charge just say at reception that you are a carer. You are welcome to stay for tea and biscuits after the class. Both these classes are suitable for beginners Any carer who has attended one of the Buddhist Centre s MBCT courses is welcome to attend the monthly MBCT drop-in class on Monday evenings at the concessionary rate. See or phone for more information. Revitalise, opposite Hove Town Hall runs drop in meditation sessions. They are from am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and am on Saturdays. Price: donations on the door. If you want to attend please use the back door as the café won t be open. Contact John Kapp on to check class availability. Carers Card Courses The Carers Card offers discounts to eligible carers on a range of local leisure, health and wellbeing services. Contact the Council s Access Point on for more information and how to apply for a card. The Carers Centre will be running occasional workshops in 2013 on topics, such as welfare rights, nutrition and money advice, aimed to help carers cope with their caring roles and to look after themselves. Please contact the Carers Centre for more information. The Brighton Buddhist Centre runs a Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy course for carers. This approach combines cognitive behavioural approaches with
7 mindfulness meditation and has been found helpful by people suffering from depression and stress-related illnesses. If you are interested, please contact the Council s Access Point on Counselling Dementia Carers Course the Alzheimer s Society runs a Carer Information and Support Programme (the CrISP course) which provides up-to-date evidence-based information in a group setting. Contact the Alzheimer s Society on for more information. There is a limited number of funded counselling places for carers at the Rock Clinic and Relate. Please contact a member of the Adult Carers Team for more information (746222) Age UK has a team of qualified volunteer counsellors who can work with individuals aged 50+ who live in the Brighton, Hove & Portslade area. There is a sliding scale of 2-25 per session for this service, and a maximum of 24 sessions is offered. If you are interested in this please contact Age UK on As you Are (tel ) provides counselling, by both experienced and newly trained counsellors, for people living in Brighton, Hove, Portslade, Southwick, Shoreham, Lancing & Worthing. Initial assessment is free, followed by up to 24 sessions on a sliding scale of Terence Higgins Trust (764200) can offer 12 free sessions of counselling for people with HIV or affected by HIV. The Parental Support Counselling Service (tel Ansaphone) offers low-cost counselling to parents, siblings (13+), carers and relatives of children and young people with special needs. Contact a Family offers families who have a child with a disability free online counselling with a trained Relate counsellor.
8 Threshold Counselling Service (tel ) offers counselling sessions with a sliding scale of voluntary contributions. They also have therapeutic groups, peer support sessions and drop-in sessions, all supported by a crèche service. B&H Womens Centre (tel ) also offers short-term, low cost counselling for women. The Fed Centre for Independent Living offers counselling to disabled people, their families, friends and carers at Montague House, Somerset Street, Brighton BN2 1JE. It is a low-cost self-referral service. Contact or info@thefedonline.org.uk The Martlets Hospice offers counselling to carers who have had a connection with their services tel: The Cancer Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital has 2 Macmillan Nurse Counsellors who offer support to cancer patients and their families. Tel and ask for the Macmillan Nurse Counsellor. Patched ( ) provides free counselling to carers who are affected by someone else s drug or alcohol use. They also offer duo counselling for any two people whose relationship has been affected by drug and/or alcohol use. The Youth Advice Centre (tel ) provides free counselling for young people aged Headway Hurstwood Park offers up to 24 counselling sessions to people with an acquired brain injury and their carers. Contact Brighton Therapy Centre (tel: ) offers a range of counselling, therapy and psychological services with a sliding scale of fees from 12 per session
9 360b Counselling Service (tel: ) offers low cost counselling to individuals, couples and families from 15 per session. Young Carers If there is a child or young person within your family who has a caring role, our Young Carers Project may be able to support them.
