Your 2012 board members include: Lillian Larwood, past president; Joy Jones, president; Lynette Black, vice president; Janice Gregg, secretary; Nancy Kershaw, treasurer; Jeanne Brandt, Global Relations chair; Jim Reeb, Membership chair; Deb Schreiber and John Williams, Grants, Scholarships & Recognition cochairs; Janice Smiley, Resource Development & Management chair; Shana Withee, Professional Development chair; Tammy Skubinna and Nellie Oehler, Retiree Issues co-chairs; Patricia Dawson, newsletter editor; and Duane Johnson, historian. We are currently looking for someone who would like to chair the Public Issues committee. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact any of the board members. This year the Gamma chapter did not have any representative attend either the JCEP or PILD conferences. Potential attendees cited travel costs and time constraints as reasons that they could not attend. There are some funds available to assist with travel costs and there are national ESP scholarships available that people could apply for to attend PILD. It was decided that the president should try to recruit people that are interested in attending by the end of December so that they would have time to apply for the funds that are available. The Gamma Chapter will hold its next meeting on May 3 at 8:30 a.m. The location is at the CH2M Alumni Center Room 110C. This is the morning after the ESP Friend of Extension/OSUEA Cooperators awards banquet that is being held at the OSU Extension Spring Training in Corvallis. All ESP members are encouraged to attend this meeting. It will be an open meeting and the agenda will include: What can ESP do for you how can our professional organization stay relevant during changing times? Please plan to attend and re-connect with your Extension colleagues. The National ESP Conference will be held October 7-10 in Mobile, Alabama. Earlybird registration will open in May. Additional information is available at the National ESP website: We are hoping to have a good delegation from Oregon attend. 2 Spring Membership Meeting Set May 3, 2012 OSU The next board meeting for the Gamma Chapter will be held in conjunction with the Spring Training in May. Everyone is welcome (board members, chapter members and guests). The meeting is scheduled on May 3rd at 8:30 am in room 110C of the OSU Alumni Center. This is on the morning after the Friends of Extension and Cooperators Banquet. One of the agenda items will be voting for the Western Regional ESP Award recipients. Committee updates, plans for scholarship fundraisers and membership development will be addressed. Global Relations Greetings from OSU Extension Epsilon Sigma Phi (ESP) Global Relations Committee. Study leave of up to 3 weeks is available annually to all OSU Extension faculty members, including professional faculty and instructors. This can be used for course work, workshops, short courses, study tours, language immersion or other kinds of professional development opportunities. This is not counted as vacation and there is no change in pay or benefits. Of course, our committee suggests that you use this time for international experiences; travel, cultural and language immersion experiences. Planning for international experiences may take months to schedule around programs and make family and travel plans, so it is not too early to be thinking about what to include in your professional development plan that will be written this fall for Locate the Internationalizing Extension website at the hard-to-find location: The National ESP website linked to the Internationalizing Extension website has many connections for international opportunities ranging from one week to a full year. Many are quite reasonably priced plus the OSU Extension Professional Development fund awards $1000 annually for faculty seeking to gain cultural competence. Our OSU Extension Service International Experience database needs updating. If you have had an international experience lately, please let me know so that I can update the information. We do know that many people check this list for ideas and contacts. 3 Becoming an ESP Life Member Are you planning to retire in 2012? or 2013? If so, the Oregon/Gamma Chapter invites you to join over 60 former OSU Extension faculty members who are life members of ESP. Life member dues are $250. Anyone looking at this option should contact Membership Committee Chair, Jim Reeb at or Retiree Issues Co-Chair, Tammy Skubinna at Retirees as Extension Volunteers There are many opportunities for retirees to stay involved with Extension after retirement. Consider giving back to our Extension Family and receive rewards from your service. Extension faculty today they would welcome your help and value your years of experience with one of the greatest education programs the nation has ever seen. Personally, since retirement I have enjoyed becoming a Master Gardener, continuing as a 4-H leader, brought extension programming (gardening) into the school where my grandkids attend, helping with wildlife Stewards events, and been involved with county and state fairs. It has given me an opportunity to share the skills learned as an extension faculty with other volunteers and helped create an awareness of extension. I have made many new friends and have had lots of fun and learned a lot amazing things from all the projects I have taken on. After visiting with faculty and staff I developed this list of some extension opportunities where our help would be welcomed. Join one of the existing volunteer programs either as a teacher or a volunteer. 4-H, Master Gardeners, Master Food Preservers, Master Woodland Manager, Wildlife Stewards, Master Watershed Managers to name a few Be a mentor to a new faculty Help with a levy campaign Grant writer Conduct research Join an advisory committee Help out at fair (judge, superintendent, fair board, etc.) Teach a class Help in the office by answering calls during staff meetings Become politically active and testify on behalf of extension On the ESP level you can become an officer or serve on a Gamma Chapter committee. On the national level there is an opportunity to become a Western Regional VP in charge of public policy. (all expenses paid) or be a member of a national committee. 4 Thank You to Development Fund Donors! David S. Ross, Chair Northeast Region Vice President and Resource Development and Management Committee Chair Our Development Fund has grown to $436,595 as of March 15, O this, $333, came from member donations and the rest were earnings. Thank you to nearly 90 donors in 2011 and over 700 donors since These members are recognized on our website. What benefits has ESP given back to members? See the Contributions and Payouts by State on the website. As of January 24, 2012, Epsilon Sigma Phi has reimbursed members a total of $361,132 in the period Also note the contributions made to ESP. Most states have received more than they have given. If 2,000 members, many of you who have not yet contributed, make a donation of $25, we can gain $50,000 this campaign year and be closer to our target of $500,000. That means that you take time now and contribute this year; we need YOU to participate now. Of course, larger amounts are welcome and all amounts are tax-deductible contributions. Help your organization reach this goal and have money to support more professional development and recognition activities. Give back to your profession. I appeal to members to take a moment to write and mail a check to Epsilon Sigma Phi, Inc., 450 Falls Avenue, Suite 106, Twin Falls, ID 83301, or to contact ESP at with a credit card. Go to the national ESP website at and click on Development Fund Giving on the left side of the homepage. At this site you will find information on giving and see our honored donors. Records show that Oregon Reimbursements since 2001 totaled $18,165. This includes Voting Delegate reimbursements, JCEP, Poster Sessions, mini-grants and Nation Committee member reimbursements are all benefits of the Endowment Contributions. Oregon s contributions to the Endowment Account during the period totaled $13,955, giving our state a 130% return on reimbursements. 5 ESP Award Recipients Announced This year s award recipients were announced during the Virtual ESP Annual Meeting. Hats off to John Williams and Debera Schreiber, our Scholarships, Grants and Recognition Co-Chairs for an outstanding event! Those recognized included: Mid Career Service Recognition Award: Debera Schreiber, Wallowa County Distinguished Service Award: Marilyn Lesmeister, Campus Staff Continued Service Award: Suzi Busler, Polk County Individual Diversity Recognition Award: Maureen Quinn, Washington County Team Diversity Recognition Award: Patricia Dawson, Umatilla County & Claire Sponseller, Morrow County 25 Year Recognition Awards: Virginia Bourdeau, Bill Braunworth, Tim Deboodt, Russell Karow, Daniel McGrath, Roger Rennekamp, John Williams Friend of Extension Award: John and Nancy Nyberg, Yamhill County The award packets are currently being reviewed at the Regional level with National winners to be announced in June. It s not too soon to begin thinking about the 2012 National ESP Conference that will be held in Mobile, AL, from October The Alabama Host Committee has been working hard to put together a great bunch of tours and have several different choices for participants. The Open Reception will be at Battlefield Memorial Park and will feature a Low-Country Boil. The facilities for the conference are excellent and there are a number of local activities that are available for those who would like to spend some extra time in the Mobile area. We have 3 excellent keynote speakers and have received some great proposals from our members for concurrent sessions and poster sessions. This is one meeting you will not want to miss! We hope to see you there.

6 Friend of Extension Award The Friend of Extension Award is the highest recognition presented by ESP. John and Nancy Nyberg* are honored for their continued dedication to Extension. John has been a 4-H Volunteer leader in Yamhill County for 32 years along with his wife Nancy who has just completed her 20th year. Their involvement began as 4-H Members in Washington County where they first met. Today, their 4-H Club (Bacon Bits & Friends) is the largest club in the county with 25 leaders and over 80+ members in 25+ project areas. They have been a donor for the 4-H program for over 30 years. John was a member of the 4-H Advisory Council who developed the Legacy Program which has won recognition by the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents. John also serves on the Oregon 4-H Volunteer Leaders Association as the Vice President. John played a major role in the OSU Extension Service securing a tax service district during the 1980 s. John has served on the State 4-H Leaders Association Executive Committee (3 years), the County 4-H Leaders Association Executive Committee (10 years), Fair Board Member (3 years), and the 4-H/FFA Market Animal Auction Committee (15 years). John and Nancy donated over $12,000 worth of restaurant equipment to the Yamhill County Fairgrounds under the agreement that 4-H would be able to use the fairgrounds for Horse shows, small animal shows, and educational field days, free of charge. *We are sorry to report the passing of Nancy Nyberg on April 7th. Our thoughts reach out to the Nyberg family at this difficult time. Retiree Service Award This year s recipient, Stan Mills, has used his working and retirement years to impact his community. While he worked for OSU, he wrote articles and published agricultural statistics for commodity crops in Oregon. He worked closely with county and state Extension faculty to generate these reports. Then, he distributed them to elected officials, university personnel, Extension staff and the general public. He worked as the OSU Extension Economics Specialist from For 45 years he has been a 4-H Archery leader, touching the lives of over 1,000 youth, and he has served as the state 4-H Archery scorekeeper for over 30 years. He developed the original Oregon 4-H Archery materials, and was instrumental in putting on the national 4-H Archery training when it was held in Oregon.
