Calgary Northside Soccer Club May, 2015 Striking for Success! In This Edition. A Message from the President Celebrating our Talent - A Player Profile The PLAYGAME Trial Outstanding Service Award Message from the President I want to personally welcome each of you to the Calgary Northside Soccer (CNS) Outdoor 2015 Season. I am our club s new President, Jason Yeast. I would like to thank Past-President Doug Hollies for all his hard work over the years and his guidance and support throughout my time with the club. Doug is remaining with CNS as coach of our Girls U18 Titanium team. I would also like to thank the CNS Board of Directors for their leadership and commitment to our club. And there are so many others behind the scenes, like the wonderful job that Persica Jear does year after year - with everything - including making volunteering at CNS a whole lot of fun. I started my volunteer experience at CNS as the webmaster with Northstar Soccer. Through this role I developed an understanding of how the Club ran as all information needed to be posted to the website. So, as an aside, please look to our website for information. We try to keep everything you need available there including your Child Tax Fitness Receipts. My webmaster volunteer role evolved into a Vice-President role and an Evaluations Coordinator role. I have been involved in helping form teams for about 4 years. And somewhere in there, became involved as a Team Manager which proved to be one of the most rewarding roles. There are so many ways to be involved and make a difference. 1
Message from the President cont Our team of volunteers is an essential resource working to improve their communities and help CNS meet our goals. This contribution keeps our costs lower than most clubs in the city and makes CNS a winner for all involved. You can inquire with anyone on the website Contacts page about volunteering with CNS. At CNS we continue to remain adaptable, motivated and responsive to new ideas while staying true to CNS s focus on strong community-minded teams concerned with the over-all soccer experience of each player. It s not winning at all costs, rather, CNS strives to create a positive experience for all - including our referees. Since Calgary Northside Soccer was formed in 2012 from the merger of Hamptons, Edgemont and Northstar, the number of registered players has remained constant. This year is no exception. Our program has approximately 500 players registered and CNS has entered 32 teams with CMSA. We have an excellent group of coaches who continue to bring players back to CNS. These coaches inspire our players to work hard, stay fit and have fun. CNS continues to leverage PASS Academy to aid in soccer technical expertise and to allow teams and coaches to grow in skill and performance. This outdoor season, PASS will provide five technical sessions for each team, training our U18 to U12 coaches, as well as keeper training sessions. We are happy with our relationship with PASS and I want to offer special thanks to PASS for all their hard work and dedication. In my new role, I will ensure we continue to represent the CNS voice and perspective within the Calgary Minor Soccer Association and the NW soccer community. I hope to hear wonderful stories of how teams get together, players and parents - throughout each season, and enjoy themselves. I d like to thank each of you for registering with Calgary Northside Soccer. I hope that all of you can step up, as organizational leaders within your team, or within our club, to help us pave our way into the future. Volunteers are truly our greatest asset today and tomorrow, and we could not accomplish what we do without your support and leadership. I ask you to stay engaged, keep us proactive and help us shape the future of Calgary Northside Soccer. Jason Yeast President Calgary Northside Soccer Uniforms Contact All uniforms, with the exception of a couple, were handed out at the team officials meeting in April. If you find you still need more, or different sizes, please do not hesitate to contact our CNS Uniform Co-ordinator Charlene Brust. Charlene has a good selection of sizes in jerseys, shorts and socks. She also has the alternate red jerseys. You can contact Charlene at brust@telus.net 2
Celebrating our Talent A Player Profile Peter Heckel Full-Back CNS U18B Strikers He s a versatile player that every coach would love to have on their team. You can play him anywhere, including goal, and he will do a bang-up job. He never complains and is always eager to learn in order to help out the team. He is a true team player. Those are the words of David Chiu, coach of CNS U18B Strikers. And that s how he describes Striker FullBack, Peter Heckel. David has coached Peter for a couple of years now and says these attributes, along with his level headedness and respectful nature, will take Peter a long way outside soccer as he approaches post secondary education and adulthood. Peter has spent the past two seasons with the Strikers and says the team drives his ambition to play. There s an additional motivation however, and that is Peter s own desire to constantly get better as a player. As Peter puts it, playing better soccer is simply more fun. Right now Peter s pre-season focus is team practices and games that will tune him and the team up for the regular season, as well as providing the opportunity for Peter to continue to develop his soccer skills and leadership abilities. With that kind of motivation it is easy to see a bright future for Peter. And you can be confident Peter will apply the same determination and rigour as he pursues a post secondary education in Engineering at the University of Alberta. We salute Peter Heckel, an outstanding example of the player talent and passion that defines CNS! 3
The PLAYGAME Trial The Canadian Institute of Health Research is conducting a research study investigating concussion and mild traumatic brain injury in kids 8-18 years. The Playgame Trial seeks to raise the understanding of concussion and post-concussion syndrome and information from the study may provide better treatments for kids in the future. Not all kids recover quickly following a concussion. Recently, researchers have found that Melatonin can protect the brain after injury. The CIHR study is exploring whether Melatonin can speed recovery after a concussion. New technologies are being applied in the trial to monitor response to treatment and help doctors understand how brain circuits adapt in kids who do and do not recover quickly. The CIHR is looking for study participants who are between 8 and 18 and have. - never suffered from a brain injury - suffered from a mild traumatic brain injury but recovered quickly - suffered from a mild traumatic brain injury but remain symptomatic 30 days post-injury Symptomatic participants who take part in the study will receive treatment for 28 days with either - low dose Melatonin - higher dose Melatonin - a Placebo (a safe substance that is not a medication) Before (all participants) and after (ONLY symptomatic) the study you will have: - Health Check - Cognitive Testing - Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) - Actigraphy and sleep diary It is important to know that before a clinical research study can start, it is carefully considered by a team of scientists, non-scientists and members of the public. The study is only allowed to go ahead if this team is satisfied that everyone taking part in the study will be looked after properly and safely. If you are invested in participating and are eligible for the study, please contact: Brenda Turley - Play Game Study Coordinator or Dr. Karen Barlow - Paediatric Neurologist Tel: or playgametrialinfo@gmail.com 5
Outstanding Service Award Recipient Karen England While many of us welcome some sustained rainfall at this time of year to help jumpstart our lawns and gardens, Karen England wishes the rain would stay away, or at least have the courtesy to only fall in reasonable amounts overnight. Karen is the CNS Facilities Coordinator, responsible for ensuring CNS teams have access to gyms, fields and playing surfaces for practices and games. She co-ordinates the work of four volunteer field schedulers who work year-round to meet the demand. The field schedulers are each assigned specific age groups and collectively juggle the load created by multiple weekly practices, games and rain.or snow. The work involves precision and diplomacy. Not all facilities are equal so everyone cannot always have their first choice..and when the rain falls, carefully built schedules can wash away. Getting things back on track demands a strong and fair leader. CNS President Jason Yeast says Karen demonstrates fairness and adherence to a balanced standard of justice in her role. He says she shows respect to equality, impartiality, proportionality, openness and due process. In other words.she doesn t play favourites with any team! Karen welcomes the challenges and expectations that come with the role and considers herself lucky for the opportunity to do something positive for the community. Karen volunteered for the role four years ago when she saw how much her daughter was enjoying the game, as well as the need for someone to take on this task. Karen wanted to give something back and devote her efforts to help build something positive. And while the job is unrelenting.karen describes it as fun! Karen says Jason Yeast, Persica Jear, the team managers, coaches and schedulers, along with many others, are her volunteer heroes. All of us are part of a team doing something important and worthwhile for the community. For her ongoing leadership, devotion and hard work, CNS is proud to recognize Karen England as this month s CNS Volunteer Of The Month. Karen and Pat with daughters Cailin & Mikaela Thank you Karen. 5
