Business in the Community
National Employee Wellbeing Survey The survey is now open and will run for 11 weeks until Friday 29 July 2016 One in four people will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime. At any one point, one in six of the working age population is suffering from a mental health condition. Last year, stress accounted for 43% of all working days lost due to ill health and for 34% of all work related ill health cases, yet 95% of employees cited a reason other than workplace stress for their absence due to stigma. Through this survey we want to: Hear UK employees experiences of mental wellbeing at work End the stigma still associated with mental wellbeing Identify factors that help or hinder the mental wellbeing of UK employees Understand how employers are responding to mental health issues Identify how equipped employees and line managers are to are to spot the early warning signs of poor mental health Use the findings to improve employee mental wellbeing. Business in the Community
Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Employee Wellbeing Practitioners Event Emotional Resilience - Building a Resilient Workforce Sue Hazleton
What is Emotional Resilience? The ability with which an individual is able to bounce back after periods of stress and adversity Emotional resilience can be taught and the workplace is an ideal setting to support employees mental health Employers can build and support employees emotional resilience to manage stress levels and reduce sickness absence
The Business Case Stress, anxiety and depression are responsible for 70 million days sick leave every year (Centre for Mental Health, 2010) Staff with mental illness not being supported cost UK businesses a total of 30.3 billion per year equivalent to 1,206 for every employee in the UK workforce (Centre for Mental Health, 2010) Companies that take proactive steps to manage and promote employee wellness and engagement can improve their financial performance by as much as 10% (BITC-commissioned research by IPSOS Mori) Organisations with high levels of employee engagement outperform those with below average levels of employee engagement on measures of operating income, net income growth and earnings per share ( 2007 Towers Watson Global Workforce Survey) NICE highlights how employers and employees can work in partnership to improve mental health and wellbeing, including prevention and early identification of problems - average organisations of 1,000 can save estimated 250,000 a year in sickness absenteeism and increased performance
Why are some people more resilient than others? Why do people react in different ways? Genetic makeup (psychological / biological) plus experiences - nature / nurture Resilient people: Are more flexible and able to adapt to change Have good relationships with others Feel a sense of control over their work
hat s What s in your in your stress Stress bucket? Bucket? Stress flows into the bucket Vulnerability / resilience is shown by the size of the bucket If the bucket overflows, problems develop - snapping Helpful coping strategies = tap working lets the stress out Unhelpful coping strategies = tap blocked so water fills bucket and overflows (Source: Brabban & Turkington, 2002)
Protective Factors that make the Life Skills Healthy Lifestyle Community Bucket Bigger Factors _ Social / communication skills _ Self belief _ Confidence _ Good problem solving skills _ Conflict resolution _ Experiences of success and achievement _Physical activity _Good nutrition _Rest and reflection _Alcohol consumption within guidelines _Stopping smoking _Enough sleep _Positive social networks _Meaningful activity (e.g. work) _Tolerant community _ Access to positive opportunities (e.g. training) _ Good housing _ High standard of living _ Participation in community activities _ Arts & culture

MHFA Lite Courses Early intervention on dealing with pressure can help slow down or stop signs of stress and lead to a faster recovery Most people who experience mental health problems can recover Listening and talking about emotional difficulties is valuable and supportive Look after your own emotional wellbeing, be proactive and preventative However, most of us know very little about mental health and we often don t spot the signs that someone else or ourselves maybe struggling until very late

Measuring Resilience On-line individual and organisational tools to measure resilience, as a starting point Robertson Cooper have developed a free on-line validated personality questionnaire called i-resilience - The i-resilience report reveals which of four key components users naturally draw on for resilience - confidence, adaptability, purposefulness and the need for social support The report gives examples of how this could impact on users responses to demanding work situations and allows users to build on existing areas of strength, and manage any potential areas of risk
Ways forward to improve resilience Buy in from senior managers Workplace health and wellbeing strategy include social & physical activities; train Health Champions Use internal communication channels staff engagement, open communication Train senior managers MHFA Lite Work / life balance lead by example out of hours s, lunch breaks, unrealistic workloads / pressure Signposting to sources of support EAP, HR IAPT, Mind, Mindfulness etc. Campaigns - Mental Health Awareness Week May; World Mental Health Day October; Stress Awareness Day November; On-line resources Time to Change; Big White Wall; self-help websites (CBT etc.), Mental Health Foundation; Five Ways to Wellbeing; Action for Happiness; Mind; Samaritans

Know Your Numbers (blood pressure) Week 12 th 18 th September 2016 High blood pressure (hypertension) rarely has no>ceable symptoms but if untreated increases risk of heart a9ack, heart failure, kidney disease, stroke or demen>a Over 5 million people in England are unaware they have high blood pressure yet it affects 1 in 4 adults
Know Your Numbers (blood pressure) Week Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmhg) and is recorded as two figures: systolic pressure the pressure of the blood when your heart beats to pump blood out diastolic pressure the pressure of the blood when your heart rests in between beats, which reflects how strongly your arteries are resis>ng blood flow For example, if your GP says your blood pressure is "140 over 90", or 140/90mmHg, it means you have a systolic pressure of 140mmHg and a diastolic pressure of 90mmHg. A reading over 140/90mmHg indicates high blood pressure which should be confirmed by tests on separate occasions to reach a diagnosis. A blood pressure reading below 120/80mmHg is considered to be ideal.
