3 A health care crisis Medical care costs of people with chronic diseases was reported in 2009 to account for more than 75% of the nation s $2.2 trillion medical care costs 1 $ Between 2005 and 2009, the amount businesses spent on total health care costs increased by 29% In that same time, the cost to employees increased by 40%. 2 Modifiable lifestyle habits significantly contribute to health care cost 3.
