2 Leeds District Open Day Success Hundreds of people flocked to an open day event at Leeds new state -of-the-art police headquarters to get a behind the scenes look at the new building and an insight into the work that officers do in local communities. Around 1,400 people attended the open day event at Leeds District Headquarters, at Elland Road. Visitors had the opportunity to take escorted tours of the building, including limited access to the cells, to see demonstrations of police tactics, vehicles and equipment. A range of stalls and displays showcased the work of a range of departments and provided crime prevention advice and information for people potentially interested in becoming Special Constables, Police Volunteers or starting a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Assistant Chief Constable Russ Foster joined members of the District s Senior Leadership Team, who were off duty at the time, to get splatted by a squad of foam-wielding children and overall a total of 1,200 was raised for Macmillan. Chief Inspector Nik Adams, who led the organisation for the event, said: The day was a huge success and it was excellent that so many people came along to learn about the work we do at what was a relaxed and fun event. It was also a great opportunity for staff to have some fun together and raise money for a good cause. We would like to thank all those involved who worked hard to help make the day a great success as well as the community for coming along. There was also plenty of entertainment for children, including face painting, Percy the police car, finger-printing and wanted posters. Chief Superintendent Paul Money, Leeds District Commander, was on hand to meet the public and talk about the policing challenges in Leeds. The building s community café hosted a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan with a custard pie challenge at a staff only event held on the rooftop terrace later in the day also contributing.

3 From Blue Lights to Green Fingers PSCO Tunnard got his hands dirty recently, helping out the Friends of Allerton Grange Fields with a community project. The Friends of Allerton Grange Fields is working in partnership 'Just the Ticket' PCSOs Sian Riley and Stuart Thompson recently organised some days of action for road safety throughout the local areas - with the help of local school children from St Urbans Primary School. with Leeds City Council Parks & Countryside Service to protect, enhance and maintain the Allerton Grange Fields as a public green open space for present and future generations to enjoy. The children designed all their own tickets and banners and did a fantastic job helping to educate and warn drivers around road safety issues such as speeding and parking. More days of action will take place through the Roundhay and Moortown areas in the future.

4 Special in the With Nicola Hoyte Special Constable Nicola Hoyte recently gave an account of what it s like to volunteer for the police. Here s an excert from Nicola s article: I began my Special duties based at Rothwell station and have since moved to Elland Road as part of the new Leeds District Structure. The role is extremely varied and diverse, and a challenge to say the least! I have met so many different people from different backgrounds and aspects of life and have carried out a number of different duties. I have participated in a number of community events, as well as patrolling the local areas, dealing with burglaries, theft, public order and domestic incidents, to name but a few. There are plenty of opportunities to work with other departments within the police, including traffic and response as well as with the other emergency services. Additionally, there are always important and interesting operations taking place, where Special Constables play a vital role. 5 PCSOs Help Pick up the Pieces Local PCSOs continue to go the extra mile whilst providing support to victims of crime in the local area. PCSOs Matthew and Gareth recently attended a call to a damaged kitchen window. It became apparent very quickly that the victim was in his mid 60s and profoundly deaf with no speech and so they wanted to do their best to support him. Whilst ascertaining what had happened, they discovered a large amount of shattered glass in the kitchen and that his television had been stolen. Gareth grabbed a pad and pen to start communicating with the complainant, taking down his details, whilst Matt made him a cuppa to calm the nerves. The PCSOs then decided that due to the lateness of the day and shock of the incident that they would start to clean up the kitchen whilst waiting for the windows to be boarded up. The cleaning operation took nearly an hour due to the amount of glass but they felt it was not right for the resident to have to clean up whilst waiting. Reflecting on the incident, PCSO Matthew Brooks said: 'We both feel that this job highlights that when we are stretched and its all hands to the pumps we are more than prepared to muck in. We also feel it highlights that we go the extra mile for victims of crime'.

7 Hot on the Heels of Nuisance Wheels! The Leeds District Off Road Bike team have been busy over the past month, out patrolling the streets of East Leeds, seizing vehicles from those who choose to cause nuisance and drive with no insurance. Thanks to the concerned residents of communities across the East Leeds area, reports of anti-social bike use have been received, investigated, followed up and acted upon by officers in the team, as you will have seen if you follow your local Police officers via social media. Pictured here are just three of the vehicles seized over the past month. The team are involved in dealing with Quads, motorcycles and cars being used in an anti-social manner and also the recovery of stolen cars. Any riders should have a driver s licence covering that category of vehicle, the vehicle should have road tax, a valid MOT and third party insurance. Those who choose to break the rules or behave in an anti social way will find their vehicle seized and will have to pay for removal and storage. Those vehicles not claimed will face a crushing fate. Advice for parents Before you buy a motorcycle or quad bike. Remember that the vehicle will require public liability insurance. Riding a motorcycle in public areas is an offence. Prosecution could lead to a fine, penalty points and disqualification. The Police could seize the vehicle and you will have to pay for removal and storage.

Do not click on any attachments or links within s unless you are sure that you know who has sent them. If you have not recently made an order with the company specified in the do not open the attachment. Check the legitimacy of the with the company that have supposedly sent it it is a good idea to find a telephone number for them independently from the as the phone number provided may be fake or go straight to the suspect. Ensure you have up-to-date anti-virus software and perform regular scans. If you have opened the attachment be extra vigilant when logging on to online banking and consider having your machine checked by an expert. If you believe you have been a victim of internet fraud or cybercrime, call the UK s national fraud and cybercrime reporting centre.
