1 ur Daily BREATH A newsletter published by PULMONARY REHABILITATION Citrus Valley Medical Center Inter-Community Campus Cope don t Mope VOLUME XVI NUMBER 11 NOVEMBER 2012 Message from Nance... THANKSGIVING is right around the corner. It is a day set aside to be grateful and to count our blessings. However, we have reasons EVERY DAY to be thankful. Unfortunately, bad things happen which tend to leave the good hidden or forgotten. Making gratefulness a HABIT (just like exercise LOL) can change the quality of your life. Counting our blessings regularly has been shown to make us happier and healthier. It is much easier said than done. I think it is easy to be grateful for positive experiences and difficult to be grateful for those negative and even tragic experiences. How do you turn negative into positive or turn troubles into blessings? I think it is changing your frame of mind and practicing GRATITUDE. So here are a few tips that might help us: 1. At the end of the day, think of 3-5 simple/small things for which you are grateful (Gratitude Journal); 2. Express your gratitude to those around you; 3. Look for what is good/right about a situation rather than what is bad/wrong; 4. Focus on what you have vs. what you don t have; 5. Be present and notice the world around you rather than getting lost in your own thoughts. Gratitude is one of the sweet shortcuts to finding peace of mind and happiness. No matter what is going on outside of us, there s always something we could be grateful for. ~ Barry Neil Kaufman What are you grateful for today? For me, it is sleeping in, cooler weather, my home, my dog sitting right by my side and a text from my daughter saying Love you, Mom. All are filling my heart with gratitude and joy. Giving thanks is one of the most powerful ways to increase one s well-being. Let s not wait for Thanksgiving to practice gratitude: It can improve our quality of life just like exercise. Remember, it is your choice. Happy Thanksgiving to all! Be well, remember to breathe and move...nance Our next Breath Savers meeting will be Thursday, November 15, Lunch will be offered at noon. You may bring your own lunch if you prefer. The menu will be spring salad with caramelized walnuts, craisins, blue cheese crumbles and diced apples, oven roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans amandine, dinner rolls and pumpkin and pecan pies for dessert. The program is free and starts at 1 p.m. The topic will be Lung Cancer Early Detection and Diagnosis, presented by Dr. Jonathan Leung, Pulmonologist. Come, bring a friend, and enjoy a delicious meal and an informative program. If you are having lunch, please RSVP by TUESDAY, November 13, 2012 at (626) Also, bring an item for our EBay garage sale and receive a free raffle ticket. Our last Breath Savers program was very informative despite technical difficulty. Dr. Patrick Lai, Podiatrist, was unable to share his pictures of feet. However, he provided an excellent verbal presentation on the Diabetic Foot. Diabetes is such a prevalent chronic disease that we all know someone that has it. He provided us with a clear understanding of the connection between diabetes and foot infections. Also, he provided information on the warning signs of foot problems and prevention of foot problems. He answered questions, and everyone went away with the concept that our FEET need to be taken care of! Thank you, Dr. Lai, for taking time from your busy schedule to speak to the Breath Savers. Also a big THANK YOU to Isabel Houghton for providing the beautiful flower centerpieces. They were well-received and raffled quickly. Your efforts saved the Breath Savers the expense of buying these items, thus saving money for our scholarships. Thank you. EBAY GARAGE SALE: In 2010, Breath Savers started an on-line garage sale from donated items. The sale is still going on thanks to the efforts of Julie Stovall. Sales to date are $4,366. Year-to-date has only been $350. Our donated items have dwindled, and we need to replenish our inventory. Please look around your home, do a little SPRING CLEANING, check with neighbors and friends and even garage sales. You will be amazed what will sell. Some items that have sold are vintage costume jewelry, handkerchiefs, pens, pencils, unopened stationery notes, bow ties, women s compacts, Disneyland items and drafting tools. Please call Julie at (626) if you have any questions. BRING AN ITEM TO THE NEXT BREATH SAVERS MEETING, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, and receive a FREE RAFFLE TICKET. UPDATE THE 3RD ANNUAL BIKE / WALKATHON: To date, our total donations to this event are $7,100. Thank you to all who contributed and participated. It was a SUCCESS. OUR SO SMART PULMONARY REHAB GRADUATES: Ruth McGrath, Lucy Berlanga, Frank Elliot, Robert Kenny DONATIONS TO BREATH SAVERS: Richard Hribar, Marianne Fitzgerald GET WELL WISHES & PRAYERS TO: Lani Exton, Anna Ducato, Harry Spencer
