Chapter News J. M. Conley Elementary Needs Volunteers Conley Elementary at SouthWood is recruiting engineers to serve as science fair judges for their various science fair projects. Judging is scheduled for Tuesday, January 14, 2014 from 8:00 am to 2.45 pm. Breakfast and lunch for all judges will be provided. 6 Page 6 Society News EWEEK is Now DiscoverE While "Engineers Week" still exists, it now becomes a program under DiscoverE instead of the actual brand name itself. You can technically still use "Engineers Week" in promoting your banquets and events taking place during/around February 16-22, but you may want to consider including the larger brand "DiscoverE" somewhere in your communications and promotions as well. Society News Legislative 2014 PE Legislative Days The National Engineers Week Foundation recently went through a re-branding effort in order to reflect its evolution from sponsoring one signature program - Engineers Week - to its increasingly broad reach and pro-active role in addressing the promotion of engineering to K-12 audiences, partner organizations, and volunteers. This effort led to changing the Foundation's name to "DiscoverE" and serving as the overall brand representing the individual programs like Engineers Week, Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, Future City, and the New Faces programs. Hosted by the Florida Engineering Society (FES) and Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE) February 4-5, 2014 I have attended our FES Legislative Days for a number of years. I have had the opportunity to meet with our elected officials and I have learned that they are, for the most part, dedicated to the welfare of the public. I have also learned that we can influence the law making process. You need not be a seasoned veteran. Few of us are. You might be surprised at how effective a short visit with your representative can be. They may see hundreds of bills during the session and the time you take to call their attention to the ones that are important to us can prove to be invaluable. John R. NSPE Award The NSPE Award is the highest award given to an individual by the Society. It is presented to an engineer who has made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession, the public welfare, and/or humankind.
