5 Authors Preface Many people feel anxious about visiting a genitourinary medicine clinic, often because they feel embarrassed or worried. As a result, it can be very difficult to remember or absorb everything that is said. In order for treatment to be effective, it is vital that a patient understands the nature of the infection, how it was contracted, the treatment prescribed and the importance of contacting sexual partners. This book is intended for healthcare professionals to use with their patients to help achieve this goal. 6 The male genitourinary tract In men, the urinary and genital tracts overlap. The urinary tract is responsible for the production, storage and passing of urine. It includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. The two kidneys are at the back of the abdomen. They produce urine by filtering unwanted substances from the blood. The urine produced passes down the ureters and into the bladder, where it is stored. When the bladder is full, you become aware of the need to pass urine, and the urine is passed down the urethra to the outside. The male genital tract includes the testicles, epididymides (single is epididymis), seminal vesicles, prostate gland, urethra and penis. The scrotum is the sac that hangs outside the body and contains the testicles and the epididymides. Sperm are made in the testicles, or testes, and are stored in the epididymides. Semen is the fluid that is ejaculated at orgasm. It contains fluid from the seminal vesicles, fluid from the prostate gland and sperm from the epididymides. At the moment of ejaculation, the bladder neck closes and the semen passes down the urethra and out through the penis.
