2 NPN - Warning Licks containing urea should be mixed and/or supplied strictly as directed on the label. Be particularly careful not to add additional urea, or to mix different products containing urea. The biggest danger remains to be the product getting wet in the feeding trough where urea will dissolve in free water and be ingested by the animals. It is therefore extremely important to protect lick troughs against rain and to ensure proper drainage. The following preventative measures and treatments must be followed in cases of urea poisoning: Vinegar is an effective remedy for ammonia poisoning, which may be caused by urea. Mix vinegar and water and dose as follows: Calf or adult sheep 750 ml (one bottle) Adult cattle litres (2 4 bottles) Protect feed against the rain, because urea is soluble in water. If an animal drinks water containing urea, the animal may be poisoned. Urea containing feeds should not be given indiscriminately with other sources of NPN. Consult a nutritionist in this regard. Homogeneous mixing of all raw materials is important. Thoroughly mix concentrates with all the prescribed ingredients. There should always be enough roughage or fodder available when providing a lick supplement to prevent excessive intake of the lick. It is recommended that animals always have sufficient access to licks. There should be sufficient room for animals around lick troughs to minimize competition amongst them. Company profile SA FEED PHOSPHATES (Pty) Ltd was established in 1992 with the aim of producing feed phosphates for the local stock-farming industry. The company s head office is in Douglas, with the production plant centrally located in Christiana in the North West province. SA Feed Phosphates focuses on manufacturing and marketing a variety of feed phosphates as a essential and strategic component of animal feeds for farm animals; single stomach animals as well as ruminants, and game inclusive. Molasses-, mineral- and trace element enriched products adds value through adequate nutritional value and improved taste and physical characteristics to ensure optimal production in your herds throughout the year. The SA Feedphos range includes a complete range of summer licks, as well as a variety of winter supplements for animals utilizing dormant winter veld. 3 GUIDELINES FOR USING LICK SUPPLEMENTS General Phosphorus is essential in skeleton formation, as well as energy metabolism in animals. A phosphorus deficiency leads to poor growth and reproduction. Feed phosphate, specifically in the form of a calcium salt, is the most cost effective form of supplementing phosphorus to animals. The typical phosphorus-deficient raw materials used in intensive stock production systems, for monogastric animals in particular, have resulted in a general use of phosphorus supplements. More than 90% of Southern Africa s natural resources can be regarded as semi-arid and is mostly moderately to severely deficient in phosphorus. Therefore, phosphate deficiencies are common in pastures in our country and therefore phosphorus, in the form of feed phosphates, must be supplemented throughout the year, specifically during summer when animal production increase to a maximum. Licks are only used to supplement nutrients that are limited in grazing and/or roughage. It is not a feed as such. Licks are therefore only recommended if there is adequate grazing or other roughage available. Guard against replacing the primary source of roughage with a lick. Lick intake should never be more than 30% of the total intake and should not exceed 1% of body weight. It should rather contribute to improving the daily intake and digestibility of the roughage on offer. Supplementation involves providing nutrition in concentrated form. During the wet season and on green veld or cultivated pastures only phosphorus supplementation is needed. In cases of low quality roughage, such as dormant winter veld, relatively high levels of NPN (non-protein nitrogen) mostly in the form of urea, will be used. In addition to providing nitrogen in the form of NPN, natural protein is also included if necessary to provide suffiecient NDP (non degradable protein) to animals in various production stages i.e lactation or body growth. Specific products may also contain ionophores, e.g. monensin, to stimulate microbes in the rumen. This will lead to a more stable rumen ph, which would lead to optimal digestion of roughage and better performance in animals. Sufficient provision is thus made for normal phosphate supplementation during the rainy season, as well as adequate phosphate and protein during the dry season. However, this alone is not enough and therefore all supplements are enriched with a combination of minerals and trace elements to ensure that important minerals (P, Ca, K, Mg, and S among others) and trace elements (including Co, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Se and I) are adequate for optimal growth and reproduction. Choice of licks and lick intake Lick intake determines both the biological and cost efficiency for a supplement. Too low intakes result in insufficient supplementation of grazing, stimulation of digestion and nutrient deficiencies. Unnecessary high intakes leads to waste, because expensive supplemented nutrients will simply be excreted, unused. For efficient supplementation of grazing, the nutritional deficiency must be determined, the correct product must be used and the correct intake must be achieved. The minimum and maximum lick intake for each product is indicated. If this intake is significantly exceeded, the type of lick must be adjusted. Too low lick intake is also undesirable and its cause must be established. Choice of product and intake is a primary function of the following factors: Stage of production - higher production levels in terms of growth, milk production and/or wool production, will increase demand and consequently intake and nutrient supply; Live mass - the higher the live mass, the higher the requirement and intake; Chemical composition - certain ingredients, such as salt, can stimulate (<5%) or limit (>5%) intake; Physical composition - a lick in the form of a compressed block can effectively limit intake regardless of the chemical composition; Availability of the lick - daily lick intake is determined by the available lick trough space and available product. Lick intake may be limited or manipulated by varying the available product; Availability of grazing - as soon as grazing becomes limited, the animal will attempt to replace the lack of feed, especially energy, with the available lick and as a result lick intake will increase significantly. Lick supplements for the summer rainfall region A general lick supplementation programme is recommended, but products must adapt to different and varying scenario s to take the animal s needs into account. On the one hand, this includes changes in rain fall, temperature, grazing composition, quantity and quality (nutritional value), which may change 1 2

4 annually from region to region. On the other hand, the stage and time of the breeding season, animal condition and/or production targets, breed, species and age of animals (which determines its nutritional needs) as well as the production programme on the farm should be considered. Each production unit must adapt to the unique circumstances in its environment. Consequently, the recommendations speak of feeding principles, rather than a rigid recipe. SA Feed Phosphates range of products makes it possible to adapt to different production situations and needs. 1. Typical phosphate mineral licks The entire Southern Africa is phosphate deficient and lacks different minerals in different regions. There exists a direct link between production and phosphate requirements. Phosphorus is needed for capturing energy and consequently growth and reproduction, as well as normal bone strength and bone growth. Enough rain during the summer months (October to March) results in abundant green grazing with sufficient protein and energy for maximum production. Under these conditions, inadequate phosphate and trace minerals are usually limiting to animal production and a phosphate mineral supplement is thus necessary to supplement green grazing. 2. Typical cattle/sheep protein mineral licks Frost is a regular occurence during the winter months on the highveld of Southern Africa and grazing is in a dormant state, which is characterised by low protein (3-5%) and mineral content, as well as a high fibre content. These conditions occur in the summer rainfall areas after the first frost and continues throughout the winter, until there is enough grazing available in the following spring. Such winter veld is difficult to digest, however with the correct protein mineral supplement it can be utilised very effectively by ruminants (cattle, sheep and most game species). Cattle and sheep protein mineral supplements are primarily used in winter to maintain live mass of animals. However, it could also stimulate production where sufficient grazing (energy) is available. 3. Typical transition licks Transition licks were developed fairly recently and aim to meet specific needs during the change over between climate seasons. In spring, after the winter and before the first spring rain, the quality of grazing may be sufficient, but not the volume. The change of seasons differs from year to year and it is difficult to provide the correct product combination to meet the animal s needs. Under these conditions, additional protein is required to utilise grazing effectively, as well as supplementary phosphate to satisfy the animal s higher production needs. The same thing happens in autumn, when typical phosphate mineral licks are substituted by winter licks and animals must be adapted to higher levels of urea inclusion in feed. Therefore, the transition lick is a product, between a protein lick and phosphate mineral lick, to meet the needs of animals during the change of seasons.
