1 Brandon Lee Dr. Antwi NUTR 555: Final MNT Project Lesson Plan Due Date: 12/13/17 Title Malnutrition and Enteral Nutrition Overview This is a 75-minute MNT 341: Medical Nutrition Therapy II lecture taught on malnutrition and enteral nutrition. This lecture will review the six criteria for malnutrition, indication and contraindications for enteral nutrition, types of enteral access routes, types of enteral administration methods, calculating enteral formula provisions and identify monitoring data to obtain with patients receiving enteral nutrition. In addition, there will be a discussion on Nutrition Focused Physical Exams, an activity on calculating enteral nutrition provisions and a quiz that assesses the students knowledge on malnutrition and enteral nutrition. Materials Needed Computer/laptop and projector Projector screen PowerPoint presentation titled Malnutrition and Enteral Nutrition Malnutrition and Enteral Nutrition Quiz Abbott Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) handout Nestle Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) handout Nestle Mini Nutritional Assessment- Short Form (MNA-SF) handout Validated Malnutrition Screening and Assessment Tools: Comparison Guide handout 1
2 Pottsville Hospital- Enteral Nutrition Formulary handout Preparation 1. Create PowerPoint slideshow and gather electronic copies of the aforementioned handouts. 2. Review the PowerPoint, handouts and quizzes for grammar/spelling errors and that the YouTube link is working. 3. Send all of the students the PowerPoint along with electronic copies of the handouts. 4. Conduct the 75-minute MNT class. Needs Assessment The need for the nutrition lesson was decided upon by Dr. Janet Antwi PhD, RD, CDN, who is the Assistant Professor of Food & Nutrition at SUNY Oneonta. Dr. Antwi feels as though her students in the NUTR 341: Medical Nutrition Therapy II course could benefit from a lecture on a particular nutrition-related topic from a student that has passed the course and is working on their Master s in Nutrition. The target demographics are the enrolled students of the SUNY Oneonta in NUTR 341: Medical Nutrition Therapy II course. Objectives After attending a 75-minute class for undergraduate dietetic students at SUNY Oneonta in the NUTR 341: Medical Nutrition Therapy II course, those who attend will be able to identify the six criteria for malnutrition, indication and contraindications for enteral nutrition, types of enteral access routes, types of enteral administration methods, demonstrate ability to calculate 2
3 enteral formula provisions and identify monitoring data to obtain with patients receiving enteral nutrition. Content I. Introduction (2 minutes) a. Today s lesson topic II. Content (70 minutes) a. Nutrition Focused Physical Exam Discussion. After showing the NFPE video on slide 14, open the classroom up to a five to ten-minute discussion about NFPE s. 2. Calculating Enteral Nutrition Provisions Activity. From slides 41-44, the students will calculate the starting rate, advancements and goal rate to meet the unique nutrition needs of the example patients provided on the slideshow. The students may work in teams of two or three. 3. Malnutrition and Enteral Nutrition Quiz. After slide 50, provide the students with five minutes to take the knowledge assessment quiz. No teamwork or looking at notes will be allowed. The quizzes may be collected for a grade at the discretion of the instructor. If it 4
5 is not being collected for a grade then the answers may be revealed at the end of the class if there is sufficient time, if not then they may be revealed online or at the next class. References 1.
