2 Conference Call Notes: What is Detoxification? In a nut shell, detoxification is the removal of waste products and toxins from our bodies. There are many different types of detoxifications that include complex and long term heavy and from toxins associated with chemo and radiation therapy to the relatively become quite popular. little about how our bodies normally detox themselves. The liver is the primary organ of detoxification. Most of us amount of work the liver does. To begin with, all the nutrients, both good and bad that we eat, digest and absorb is pump directly to the liver before it circulates throughout our bodies. These nutrients enter the liver where they are processed and packaged into parcels which are then dumped into the blood stream to be distributed to the These food parcels can include any combination of fat, protein and carbs as well as any additives, toxins and medications that we ingest. Once these food packets reach their destinations, our cells ingest the nutrients and in turn produce waste products that are also dumped into the blood stream to be removed. In a real sense, our arteries and veins are both the highways for food transport as well as the sewers for waste removal. Problems can start to enough and as a result it continues to re-circulate through the same arteries that feed our cells. How Does The Liver Normally Remove Toxins From Our Bodies? 3 Once again, the liver is crucial as the primary means of removing waste and toxins is probably the wrong word as it kind of makes me think of an oil filter in a car. That filter removes debris from the wear and tear of the engine. The liver is more along the f different steps to remove garbage, bacteria and other contaminants. The liver treats waste in the blood in a similar manner through 2 chemical reaction phases. Toxins and waste can be either fat soluble or water soluble which means that they can either dissolve in fat or water respectively. Water soluble waste is eliminated On the other hand, fat soluble toxins must go through 2 treatment phases in the liver to convert them into smaller water soluble particles so they can be excreted. Phase 1 liver reactions basically convert large fat soluble toxins into smaller fat soluble particles. These particles are still fat soluble so we still cannot eliminate them. This phase 1 reaction is typically quite fast but these smaller fat soluble particles toxins must still re-circulate through the entire body and pass through the liver a second time to be converted to even smaller but water soluble particles that can then be eliminated. Typically, phase 1 reactions are fast but phase 2 reactions are much slower and, as a result, are the rate limiting step. This means the liver can only eliminate waste at a speed governed by how fast the phase 2 reactions work. What Factors Slow Down Normal Liver Function? What slows down and speeds up phase 1 reactions? ( Substances that Inhibit phase I detoxification Drugs: benzodiazepines; antihistamines; cimetidine and other stomachacid secretion blocking drugs; ketoconazole; sulfaphenazole Foods: naringenin from grapefruit juice; curcumin from turmeric; capsaicin form chili pepper; eugenol from clove oil; quercetin from onions Botanicals: curcuma longa (curcumin); capsicum frutescens (capsaicin); eugenia caryophyllus (eugenol); calendula officianalis Other: aging; toxins from inappropriate bacteria in the intestines Substances that activate Phase I detoxification Dr. Derek Lee drlee@betterhealthprovdiers.com - Wellness Doctor, North America

4 Drugs: alcohol; nicotine in cigarette smoke; Phenobarbital; sulfonamides; steroids Foods: cabbage, broccoli, and brussels sprouts; charcoal-broiled meats; high-protein diet; oranges and tangerines (but not grapefruits) Nutrients: niacin; vitamin B 1 ; vitamin C Herbs: caraway and dill seeds Environmental toxins: carbon tetrachloride; exhaust fumes; paint fumes; dioxin; pesticides What slows down and speeds up phase 2 reactions? 5 Do It Yourself Detox In actual fact, we are in a perpetual state of detoxification. We live, breath, consume and produce waste as a normal daily routine so toxins are constantly being removed from our bodies. But as poor nutrition, age and stress affects us, we become less and less efficient at including the brain and liver. By far the best detox we can do is through meeting and exceeding our daily nutritional requirements so our liver can work at peak performance all the time. 6 "What Exactly Is The Difference Between A Cleanse And A Detox? And, Why Do One?" ( drleeonhealth.com) A cleanse and a detox are totally different creatures. But, many people don't know there is a distinction. The two words have become interchangeable. When patients ask me about trying a detox or cleanse, the first thing I do is ask THEM, "Do you know what the difference is?". A cleanse and a detox are not the same and they certainly have different health goals. Take a peek below for the difference between the two, why to do it and which one to do first. "A Cleanse Is Basically Lawn Care For The Gut!" But first, a little anatomy. The cells lining our digestive tract are about one cell thick. The lining has to be thin in order to allow us to absorb nutrients. If the lining of our digestive tract was too thick, then liquids and nutrients wouldn't be able to penetrate and enter our bodies. On the other hand, the cells that make up our skin are multiple layers in thickness, just like the layers of an onion. When we get sunburn, the surface layers peel off with deeper layers growing out. It's designed that way as a means of protecting us from the harsh external environment. Multiple skin layers mean more armor and greater protection against bacteria and other pathogens. 7 Are our skin and the cells lining our digestive tract similar? Very! Most of us don't realize that our digestive tract is actually a continuation of our skin, but just internally. Just look in a mirror and see how the skin of your face runs into your lips which then roll into the gums of your mouth and down into the throat. It's easy to imagine our gut as our internal skin. Unfortunately our digestive tract is much more fragile. To protect our fragile digestive tract, we have formed friendly relationships with specific strains of bacteria. These bacteria, lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacterium bifidum and lactobacillus bulgaricus inhabit the small intestine, large intestine and the last one fills in the gaps throughout. These bacteria grow as colonies in our digestive tract and form a protective layer above the cells lining our gut. Just like a layer of grass on a lawn. If you picture one blade of grass as one bacterium, then a nice lush green lawn is what we strive for. When the lawn is thick and healthy, there are no weeds. In our case, a healthy population of good bacteria in our gut protects us from dangerous pathogens. We reduce our vulnerability to infection. Over time, undigested food, debris, parasites and bad bacteria can accumulate along our digestive tract and leads to reduced efficiency in terms of both absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste. A cleanse may help to improve this situation by removing this build up and cleaning out the gut, so to speak. There are many ways to do this but the best way is the simplest way...a basic fibre cleanse. There are many products that can do this. The basic idea is that by increasing your fibre intake, you remove the build up of debris from the walls of the digestive tract. Note that there are many kits that will do this and most will probably work, but there is one thing to look out for... Make Sure You Add Probiotics! Now back to the lawn care analogy. A fibre cleanse is like dethatching a lawn. On the lawn, you remove the old grass clippings and leaves while in the gut, you remove the debris and undigested food. The problem is that you will also remove much of the good bacteria. Remember the lawn care analogy. When you dethatch the lawn, if you are too aggressive and remove healthy grass, what grows back first? Weeds. So just add grass seed. Healthy grass will fill in the gaps. With a cleanse, add probiotics daily to make sure the good bacteria is growing to fill in the exposed areas of the digestive tract. Then you will be running efficiently.
