2 First Aid Massage Introduction Communication Anatomy Basics Care: First Aid Massage

3 Communication Where Ask where the pain is. Determine the anatomical location. What Ask what kind of pain? Sharp? Dull ache? Pain with or without movement? Electrical? Numbness? Is the body part warm/hot or cold to the touch? How How bad is the pain? Ask the degree of Pain on a scale of 1 10, with 10 being Excruciating.

4 First Aid Massage CARE FIRST DEGREE MASSAGE Defined as a pain of 5-6 on our pain scale Dull ache, pain with movement CARE sequence: Warm Up: Compression or cat paw Petrissage Thumb or three finger circles Effleurage: Long, slow glide. Long flowing strokes Trigger Point Reinforced thumb holding point while loved one take 3 slow deep breaths. Release point on the exhale of the 3 rd breath. Traction Gentle traction of the limb against gravity. Cool Down Percussion, Jostling and Range of Motion

5 First Aid CARE SECOND DEGREE MASSAGE Defined as a pain of 7-8 on our pain scale Sharp, Pain without Movement, Some Numbness, Tingling or Radiating pain CARE sequence: Stretches: Active Isolated Stretches: 2 Second Stretch PNF: CRAC : Contract/Relax/Antagonist Contract Warm Up: Use Heat Pack: Petrissage Thumb or three finger circles Effleurage: Long, slow glide. Long flowing strokes Traction: Gentle pull of the spine contrary to gravity. Cool Down Ice : 10 minutes on location of pain. Repeat AIS or PNF stretches. Range of Motion

6 First Aid CARE THIRD DEGREE MASSAGE Defined as a pain of 9-10 on our pain scale Severe Pain, Very Sharp, Electrical, Excruciating, Stabbing CARE sequence: Warm Up: Ice Massage: using small frozen cube, slowly massage with some pressure in and around the area of pain, until pain has reduced to Second or First degree pain threshold and then follow those protocols.

7 Glossary Active Isolate Stretching: repetitive, two second stretch with ROM (Range of Motion) Cat Paw: alternating hand pressure compressing muscles tissue. Kneading. Compression: Pressure into the body to spread tissue against underlying structures. Effleurage: (gliding stroke) Horizontal strokes applied with the fingers, hand, or forearm that usually follow the direction of the underlying muscles fibers, fascial planes or a dermatome pattern. Ice Massage: paper cup filled half way with water and frozen. Peel paper back and hold onto bottom of cup. Apply ice directly to skin, with circular motions and varying pressure. Jostling: gentle rocking and shaking of the limb or extremity Petrissage: (kneading) Rhythmic rolling, lifting, squeezing and wringing of softrtissue. Circular patterns with fingers, hands and elbows. P.N.F. ProprioceptiveNeuromuscular Facilitation: C.R.A.C: 6 second Contraction of Muscle, RELAX, and then contraction of the Antagonist(oposing) muscles, to gain increased flexibiltyof very restrictive muscles. ROM: Range of Motion. Full movement of joints. Tapotement: Springy blow to the body at a fast rate to create rhythmical compression to the tissue. Also call Percussion. Trigger Point: a pain radiating point, falling between the 6 8 pain zone. Treatment: hold the point for three deep slow breaths.
