1 Dear Members, Greetings to everyone and I hope that 2012 is going well for everyone it seems to be racing along, end of April already. It has been good to receive news from a number of countries regarding their conferences. I hope that people from the region support these conferences where possible. I was fortunate to attend the Physical Therapy Association, Republic of China Conference recently and to have held a workshop on Clinic al Education in Taipei. It was terrific to meet with so many enthusiastic and passionate physiotherapists. I am also looking forward to attending the Indonesian Conference in June in Medan. These visits give me the opportunity to share ideas, hear what is going on in the region and provide support as needed. The committee has been working on a number of issues. The development of the secretariat is one focus for the committee. To enable AWP to sustain its support of the advancement of physiotherapy in the region it needs ongoing administrative support. The APA is providing this for the time being and we are very grateful to them. However in the longer term we need to be able to sustain ourselves. We are also looking at the feasibility of having a couple of webinars for the region. News of these will come to you as soon as we have got dates settled. We are starting to plan for the AWP regional meeting in Taiwan next year. If you have suggestions for a workshop we could run in conjunction with the Conference in September please let us know. A date to put in the diary is WCPT in Singapore from May 1 4, It is exciting that the WCPT Congress will be held in our region and we must make sure that we all support the Singapore Physiotherapy Association and WCPT to make this a memorable Congress. Associations should make sure they are up to date with their payments to AWP and to WCPT. Letters have been sent out to all organizations. It is important to make sure that you are in good standing financially. Please keep in touch and let the secretariat know of any issues facing your organization and let us know if there are things that can be done that we can help you with. Best wishes Gillian Webb Chair 1
2 Update from WCPT Executive meeting March 2012 One of the key discussions held at the recent executive meeting was around branding and whether or not to continue with the World Physical Therapy Day theme of Movement for Health. We did not take long to agree that it is in fact a core feature of the profile of physiotherapy around the world and so we elected to continue with it. However the theme will be expanded and importantly we agreed to develop a new logo for the theme which separates it from the WCPT logo itself. Member organisations will be updated soon and a number of publicity materials will be developed in time for them to be used and developed as you wish in your own countries. We also reviewed the final report from the Congress held in Amsterdam thanks to all of you for your contributions and support as the Congress was very successful on all fronts the range and standard of presentations; the networking and collegiality; the exhibits and of course financially. The secretariat is now beginning to focus on preliminary developments for Singapore in The strategy and workplan for the next four year period was also confirmed at the meeting and it was pleasing to note that a few items have already been completed or are well underway, for example the database project. WCPT will also be developing its database of experts and more information will be forthcoming soon about other support that WCPT can offer by linking with experts. At the time of our meeting a number of Member Organisations were still in arrears with their subscriptions so please check with your finance officers to ensure that your WCPT subscriptions have been paid! WCPT Executive will be holding a series of Skype meetings over the next few months and the next face-to-face meeting is scheduled for early November. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any queries or need advice on any policies. Margot Skinner WCPT Executive Member 2
3 Member Organisation Updates The AWP Executive is keen for this to have updates from association in this newsletter. This month there is an update from one of our newest member organisation and one of our oldest. Macau Physical Therapist Association (MPTA) As a first-year member association, Macau Physical Therapist Association (MPTA) is very pleased to inform the AWP region about the new changes to our association in the year 2011 and our plans in Since MPTA was voted to be a member association at the general meeting in 2011 in the Netherlands, the number of members of MPTA was increased from 61 to 71, with 16% of increment from last year. The members in different positions of Executive Committee and Supervisory Committee will remain the same as we submitted in 2010 until Jun During 2011 the Macau Physical Therapist Association (MPTA) undertook a range of activities. These included: Mr. Steven Chan, President of Executive Committee, Mr Chi Wai Lo, Vice-President of Executive Committee, Ms Kit Man Ao, Correspondent, represented MPTA to attend the general meeting of WCPT and the Physical Therapy 2011 Congress. Mr Steven Chan also gave a speech for the introduction of the physical therapy profession in Macau at the general meeting of the AWP region. MPTA was voted to be a member association of WCPT. MPTA, Macau Occupational Therapists Association and Macao Association of Speech Therapists united together to submit a letter to express our opinion on the constitution of the board members of The Medical Council of Macau. Four members represented MPTA to attend the event of FUNfitness, held by Special Olympics Macau The MPTA has plans for 2012 which include: To establish and start operation of the accreditation system of continuing professional development within MPTA To establish the draft of the Physical Therapy Law for the reference of the Macau S. 4 To hold the event for World PT Day, in the theme of scoliosis To collaborate with Macau Special Olympics to hold the event of FUNfitness Physiotherapy New Zealand Our Expanding Your Horizons conference is on 4-6 May in Wellington, New Zealand. A member of any WCPT member organisation pays the same registration fee as a Physiotherapy New Zealand member and you will be made most welcome! We have an excellent programme of speakers. There will be plenty of networking and fun as well. Find more details and the registration form on We are raising public awareness about how physiotherapy can help with breathing problems. Our focus is on asthma, COPD, and breathing pattern disorders. A lot of information, including video, will be on our website. We will have posters and leaflets for our members to distribute, and we may use TV advertising. Following the devastating earthquake in Christchurch over a year ago, there have been continuing aftershocks. The area s population has reduced and those who still live there are very stressed and on edge. We are supporting our members in Christchurch through a communitybased Recover with Physiotherapy campaign. We have just published a position statement on supervision. We plan to have training available for supervisors. We have employed a professional development advisor to co-ordinate and implement continuing professional development. We are continuing to give our members information and resources to help physiotherapy align with population health needs. We are discussing a possible career pathway for New Zealand physiotherapists. PEDro PEDro, the Physiotherapy Evidence Database, is an internet-based resource designed to support evidence-based physiotherapy. It is freely available at PEDro provides rapid access to bibliographic details and abstracts of over 21,000 published reports of research relevant to physiotherapy, including randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. A unique feature of PEDro is that reports of randomised controlled trials are rated for quality to help users quickly discriminate between trial reports that are likely to be valid and interpretable and those that are not. These ratings help users to judge the quality and usefulness of trials to inform clinical decision-making. Where possible, links to full-text versions of the reports of trials, reviews and guidelines are provided in the PEDro search results. Depending on journal policies, some links to full text are free while others are by subscription or pay per view only. PEDro offers the most complete catalog of high-quality research to help guide clinical practice. We have a massive number of trials in the database and 4
5 PEDro makes it easy for users to access the latest and greatest research thanks to the unique ranking system and search features, says manager of PEDro, Dr Anne Moseley from The George Institute for Global Health. Physical Therapy Member Organisations lend their support to PEDro. Current supporters from the Asia West Pacific Region are the Australian Physiotherapy Association (Australia), 香港物理治療學會 (Hong Kong), Physiotherapy New Zealand (New Zealand), Philippine Physical Therapy Association (Philippines), اﻟﺟﻣﻌﯾ ﺔ ( اﻟطﺑﯾﻌ ﻲ ﻟﻠﻌ ﻼج اﻟﺳ ﻌودﯾﺔ Saudi Arabia), Singapore Physiotherapy Association (Singapore), and 中華民國物理治療學會 (Taiwan). PEDro is maintained by the Centre for Evidence-Based Physiotherapy at The George Institute. The Centre s mission is to maximise the effectiveness of physiotherapy services by facilitating the clinical application of the best available evidence. The Centre functions as a nonprofit organisation to facilitate physiotherapy research and implementation of effective physiotherapy. Principal partner, the Motor Accident Authority of New South Wales, Australia, has provided support to maintain PEDro as part of their commitment to supporting evidence-based programs that promote optimal recovery from motor accident trauma. In addition, foundation partner the Australian Physiotherapy Association and major partner the American Physical Therapy Association have provided support in recognition of PEDro s role in providing a robust web tool for physiotherapy clinicians. In 2011, PEDro was used to answer 1,773,294 clinical questions. This means that a search of PEDro was conducted, on average, every 18 seconds. PEDro is used by the global physiotherapy community. In 2011 PEDro was used by physiotherapists in 169 countries and territories. The biggest users in 2011 came from: United States (16%), Australia (15%), Brasil (11%), The Netherlands (5%) and Italy (4%). Approximately 17.2% of PEDro searches in 2011 were from countries in the Asia West Pacific Region of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy. As a not-for-profit organisation, PEDro exists only through the support provided by corporate sponsors and industry partnerships. As such, our corporate sponsors are critically important to the future of PEDro. It is through these partnerships that we are able to keep PEDro as a free, robust internet tool for practicing physiotherapists from around the world. If you would like to learn more about partnership opportunities with PEDro, please contact Anne Moseley on pedro@georgeinstitute.org.au PEDro is truly a global project. The web pages are available in seven languages (English, 中文, Português, Deutsch, Français, Español, and Italiano), with two languages currently being added (日本语 and 한국의).
