2 PART I: COURSE INFORMATION Effective Term: INSTRUCTIONAL PACKAGE COURSE PREFIX: MTH-121 COURSE TITLE: Principles of Massage I CONTACT HOURS: CREDIT HOURS: 4.0 RATIONALE FOR THE COURSE: This course will allow the students to develop the skills necessary to palpate the different layers of muscle tissue, and using those skills, begin to employ techniques in a massage session. These skills will provide the student with the basic skill for massages consisting of techniques including, but not limited to, relaxation, therapeutic, deep tissue, myofascial release. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an in-depth study of Swedish massage techniques and applications to a complete body massage. PREREQUISITES/CO-REQUISITES: Test Scores: COMPASS Reading 85 and COMPASS Writing 65 or SAT Critical Reading 460 or ACT Reading 19 and ACT English 16 Or Credit level: ENG 101 Minimum Grade of C or Credit level ENG 100 Minimum Grade of C* or Credit level ENG 101 Minimum Grade of TC or Credit level ENG 155 Minimum Grade of C or Credit level ENG 155 Minimum Grade of TC And Background Check Form 1 *Online/Hybrid courses require students to complete the DLi Online Student Orientation prior to completing an online course. 3 Scrubs will be worn throughout the program from day 1 of week 2 until the end of the Massage Therapy Program. Jewelry will not be worn while working on the massage tables during any lab time. Nails must be kept short and clean. Massage table for home practice recommended for first semester and required for second semester. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: Access to Desire2Learn (D2L), HGTC s student portal for course materials. WaveNet and D2L access. Computer/Laptop STUDENT IDENTIFICATION VERIFICATION Students enrolled in online courses will be required to participate in a minimum of one (1) proctored assignment and/or one (1) virtual event to support student identification verification. Please refer to your Instructor Information Sheet for information regarding this requirement. CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE: You are expected to treat your fellow students with respect. This means you should limit talking to your neighbor during lecture and do not start to pack up your materials before class is over. Finally, cell phones MUST be turned off or put on the vibration mode during class. NETIQUETTE: is the term commonly used to refer to conventions adopted by Internet users on the web, mailing lists, public forums, and in live chat focused on online communications etiquette. To provide information to each student concerning the appropriate use of social media within the massage therapy program. 2. To provide information to each student concerning the consequences of inappropriate use of social media within the massage therapy program. Terminology: 1. Social media and networking are interchangeable terms. Each term may refer to, but is not limited to, the following examples: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, any blog, or posting board. 2. Libel is a published false statement that is damaging to a person s reputation; a written defamation. 3. Slander refers to the utterance of false charges or misrepresentations which defame and damage another s reputation, or a false and defamatory statement about a person.

4 Policy: 1. Massage therapy students must not transmit or place online individually identifiable patient, student, faculty, adjunct faculty, or staff information. Massage therapy students must not publish libel or make slanderous remarks or insinuations about patients, peers, adjunct faculty, faculty, staff, or the institution of HGTC, even if they are not identified. 1. Massage therapy students must not transmit or place online any test questions or test content that could be identified as cheating. The college policy on academic misconduct will be followed to include social media networking. 2. Massage therapy students must observe ethical and professional patient-nurse/student massage therapy boundaries. o Do not share or post opinions, information, insinuations, or photos gained through the student massage therapy -patient relationship on any social media outlet. o Do not share or post libelous or slanderous opinions, information, insinuations, or photos regarding students, faculty, staff, or the institution of HGTC. 3. Should any problem arise during the classroom or clinical setting, use the Chain-of- Command to resolve the issue. 4. Student massage therapy has a responsibility to promptly report any identified breach of confidentiality or any inappropriate use of social media. 5. This breach may be reported to (but not limited to) an instructor, staff person, or dean. 6. Be aware of your association with HGTC in online social networks. o Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) name, photos, trademark, etc., cannot be used in social media groups. For example, if a cohort, class, or classmate makes a Facebook page named HGTC s Fall Class of 2016, this would be an infringement on trademark rights. 7. If you identify yourself as a student, ensure your profile and any related content is professional and consistent with how you wish to present yourself to colleagues, clients, and potential employers. Consequences: 1. Violations of patient/client privacy using an electronic device will be subject to HIPPA guidelines and consequences. Students who share confidential information utilizing social media do so at the risk of disciplinary action, including failure in a course and/or dismissal from the massage therapy program. Part II: Student Learning Outcomes PLO - OSHA and State Regulations- Comply with OSHA and current state regulations, security, privacy and confidentiality policies while modeling professional behaviors, ethics and appearance. PLO - Licensure- Successful completion of the MBLEx licensure exam COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES and ASSESSMENTS*:

5 The student will be able to perform a 60-minute massage, consisting of any one or more of the following techniques and/or methods: 1. Swedish/ Relaxation 2. Therapeutic 3. Deep Tissue 4. Myofascial Release STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate various massage strokes 2. Identify various body parts and muscles used to apply strokes 3. Set table height 4. Demonstrate correct body mechanics 5. Demonstrate appropriate draping methods 6. 8 Part III: Grading and Assessment EVALUATION OF REQUIRED COURSE MEASURES/ARTIFACTS* Students performance will be assessed and the weight associated with the various measures/artifacts are listed below. EVALUATION* Exams (Midterm & Final Evenly Weighted) 40% Other (homework assignments, quizzes, discussion & presentation) 20% Daily Lab Grade 10% Lab Practical (Midterm and Final Evenly Weighted) 30% Total 100% *Students, for the specific number and type of evaluations, please refer to the Instructor s Course Information Sheet. GRADING SYSTEM: State the College s or departmental grading system as delineated in the Catalog. Please note the College adheres to a 10 point grading scale A = , B = 89-80, C = 79 70, D = 69 60, F = 59 and below. You must have your Dean s approval if changes in the scale are made. Grades earned in courses impact academic progression and financial aid status. Before withdrawing from a course, be sure to talk with your instructor and financial aid counselor about the implications of that course of action. Ds, Fs, Ws, WFs and Is also negatively impact academic progression and financial aid status. The Add/Drop Period is the first 5 days of the semester for full term classes. Add/Drop periods are shorter for accelerated format courses. Please refer to the academic calendar for deadlines for add/drop (ACADEMIC CALENDAR). You must attend at least one meeting of all of your classes during that period. If you do not, you will be dropped from the course(s) and your Financial Aid will be reduced accordingly. Part IV: Attendance Horry-Georgetown Technical College maintains a general attendance policy requiring students to be present for a minimum of eighty percent (80%) of his or her classes in order to be eligible to receive credit for any course. However, due to the varied nature of courses taught at the College, a more rigid attendance policy may be required by individual instructors. At a minimum, a student may be withdrawn from a course(s) after he or she has been absent in excess of ten percent (10%) of the total contact hours for a course. *Please refer to the Instructor Course Information Sheet.

Please note, instructors may require tests to be taken at approved testing sites, if you use a testing center other than those provided by HGTC, the center may charge a fee for its services.
