ISBN: ), (8 th Ed. ISBN: ) Required Workbook & Guide: Introduction to Human Anatomy Laboratory Manual & Study Guide Custom Edition for LAVC by E. Brockman & P. Byrd-Williams. Required Supplies: 1 package of Scantron Form No. 882-E (50 answers per side for tests), #2 pencils, eraser, colored pens/pencils, gloves, lab coat, and computer/printer access Canvas: Canvas is an online learning resource, which is integrated into this class only to enhance the class. All lecture and laboratory notes may be found on Canvas in addition to the syllabus, handouts, homework and other possible resources. Canvas may be accessed through the school website, under the online classes tab. Course Prerequisite: Biology 3 or 6 with a grade of C or better. Course Preparation: English 28 or English 363 or placement into English 101 and Mathematics 115 is recommended. Course Description: Anatomy 1 is a class primarily intended for nursing, allied health, kinesiology and other health related majors. This course offers a detailed study of the structural organization of the human body: gross and microscopic structure of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems, from cellular to organ system levels of organization. Laboratory work includes dissection of fresh and preserved excretory mammalian organs, use of anatomical models and histology. This course, Anatomy 1, satisfies: IGETC Area 5B or 5C & CSU GE Area B2 or B3 Tutoring: Tutoring is available at the Tutoring Center on the 2 nd floor of the AHS building, Room 232. Students will be required to enroll in section in order to take advantage of this free resource. More information, including the schedule of workshops, may be found at: Grading: There will be a total of 6 unit exams. Each unit exam is composed of a lecture and a laboratory portion. The 6 th unit exam will be scheduled during finals week and will be your final exam. Spelling counts on all exams. Due, at the beginning of the last laboratory class of each unit, are the labs from the lab manual covered during that unit (see lab schedule for dates.) Late lab work will not be accepted and the student will earn a "0" for that unit's laboratory manual points. Please keep all returned materials until the end of the semester, in case you need to question your grade. Extra credit points are available on each exam as well as both dissection labs. Grades will not be curved and will follow the grade scale below. 1

2 Point Distribution: The point and letter grade Laboratory manual 100pts distribution are as follows: 5 unit exams (100pts/exam) 500pts A % ( ) Final exam (6 th unit exam) 100pts B 80-89% ( ) Total 700pts C 65-79% ( ) D 55-64% ( ) F <54% (384 & below) Recommendations to pass this class: 10 to 12 hours of home study each week. Attendance: Attendance will be taken at the beginning and end of lecture and each laboratory period. If you are absent when roll is called and do not notify me when you have arrived, you will be marked absent for that class session. Three cases of tardiness is equivalent to one absence. Absence and tardiness to lecture/lab, including leaving lecture/lab early, can have an adverse effect on a student s grade. Any student may be excluded from the class when more than 6 hours of lecture and/or lab time has been missed. Make-up Exams: Up to 1 make-up exam will be allowed during a semester for a missed exam, including the final exam, due to an excused absence with documentation from a physician or other official. The make-up exam will be scheduled during my regularly scheduled office hours, and will differ in format, comprised entirely of long essay type questions. The laboratory portion of the missed exam may not be made up. A maximum of 70 points is possible on the make-up exam. Academic Honesty: Students are expected to abide by the College s Academic Honesty Policy. Cheating is NOT tolerated. Any student caught cheating (i.e. obtaining test answers from classmates, using notes, assisting classmates, talking, looking, etc.) during any exam will be asked to leave the classroom for the remainder of the class session and will be given a score of 0 on that exam. In addition, a record of this cheating will be reported and placed in the student s permanent file. Electronic Devices: Laptops and tablets are encouraged to be used in class; but, will be used for note taking ONLY. Anyone caught using an electronic device for purposes unrelated to class, will NOT be permitted to use any electronic device for the remainder of the class. NO electronic devices of any type are allowed on your person or area during testing. Additionally, these devices must be turned OFF during exams. Failure to comply will constitute cheating with further action taken. NO visual or audio recording of any kind may be utilized in class, without prior consent from Dr. Manoukian. This includes taking pictures of board notes. Religious Accommodations: If you require accommodations for religious purposes, you must inform the instructor in writing PRIOR to the end of the 2 nd week of class in addition to providing written documentation from the clergy. SSD Accommodations: If you require SSD accommodations, you must register with the college s Disabled Student Services and inform the instructor in writing PRIOR to the end of the 2 nd week of class. 2

3 Classroom/Laboratory Room Rules: Food and drinks are NOT permitted in the classroom/lab at any time. Proper attire must be worn in laboratory at all times, including closed-toe shoes and clothing covering the body from neck to knees. Long hair must be tied back and loose jewelry removed. Anyone not dressed appropriately will be excluded from participating in that lab. Hats, of any type, are NOT permitted during exams. It is your responsibility to leave the classroom/laboratory cleaner than you found it, especially during particular labs that tend to get messy. Smoking Policy (also discussed in the schedule of classes): There are no smoking areas within the entire science quad. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas. Proper class behavior: Stealing is very serious and can result in disciplinary action. Harassment of any kind or the use of defamatory remarks is not tolerated in this classroom. Please see the instructor immediately if any of the above situations has occurred. Course Objectives: Lecture 1. Describe key structural features of different human cell and major tissue types. 2. Identify and describe the anatomy of the systems of the human body. 3. Relate structure and function at the cellular through system levels of organization of human body systems. 4. Describe structural or anatomical changes that occur in disease, injury or aging of the human body systems. Laboratory 1. Identify the major body areas, regions, cavities, spatial relationships and membranes. 2. Identify the system components of the major systems including the integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, endocrine system, cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system and reproductive system. 3. Identify the histology of selected tissues from the major systems. 4. Utilize the compound microscope to identify selected tissues and organs at the cellular level and differentiate key characteristics. 5. Utilize models and diagrams to identify selected components of the major systems. 6. Utilize dissections to identify selected components of the majors systems. Student learning outcomes: Course Level Student Learning Outcome Assessment Activity Assessment Measure The student will be able to clearly express the ability to correctly utilize anatomical terms in identifying anatomical structures using either models, diagrams or slides. Students will use anatomical terminology in identifying structures on practical exams. Students may also present anatomical structures orally. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of body structures by practical identification. A rubric will be developed to assess lab practical examinations. Students will be able to collect, organize and evaluate data. Students will survey blood cells and differntiate the cell types, determine percentages and possible diagnoses. A rubric will be developed to determine accuracy of cell differentiation and diagnoses. 3
