1 Main Arts and Sciences Science Department Intro Anatomy and Physiology BIOL Section All 4 Credits 06/06/2013 to 08/04/2013 Modified 05/22/2013 Description An introductory course in human anatomy and physiology which combines lecture and laboratory experiences to provide a basic understanding of the structure and function of body systems. Designed for vocational programs, that include emergency medical technicians, massage therapists, medical technicians, and medical transcriptionists, as well as for non-science majors. (F,Sp,Su) Requisites Prerequisite: Reading Level 5 and Writing Level 6 and Math Level 4 Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: A. Describe the normal structure and function of the human body. B. Describe specific aspects of the nature of physics, chemistry, and biology, as they relate to the structure and functions of the human body. C. Show how the various parts of the body are related to one another and how they work together as an integrated unit using not only verbal examples but also models, animal organs, bones, and the scientific method. D. Describe the human body as an amazing and efficient organism. E. Demonstrate through examples, case studies, essays, and data-gathering and analyzing in laboratory experiments, the ability to apply basic physiological principles to draw conclusions in relation to the health of the student, and the human body. F. Demonstrate an appreciation and understanding of the inherited and environmental factors which may be controlled or modified in the interest of health, and use scientific knowledge to make decisions involving them. G. Develop efficient reasoning skills and study habits to exhibit desirable professional attitudes and skills by using case studies, lab experiments, interactive activities, dissections, examples, and other technologies. H. Utilize microscopic techniques in the laboratory, recognize and identify tissue types, parts of the body including scientific terminology and locations. Enrollment Verification Class attendance and participation are essential to student success. Class rosters will be updated by the end of the second week of the semester (50% refund period) to accurately reflect student enrollment in this course. Students who have not attended by the end of week two will be administratively dropped and responsible for any required tuition and fee charges.
