3 From Pain to Performance 2017 SPEAKERS The aim of the 2017 Symposium is to address current and contemporary issues in the prevention, treatment, management and rehabilitation of trauma and injuries in a sport and exercise context. The internationally renowned speakers are all recognised experts in their specific areas of expertise and all work at the cutting edge of evidence based orthopaedic and musculoskeletal medicine. The speakers will aim to disseminate what they perceive as being the key message and priorities within their own particular area of sport and exercise medicine. The programme will also allow delegates to question and challenge the topics covered and to be a part of an innovative and exciting event. Ms Susan Alexander MBBS MSc PhD FRCS Susan Alexander is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based at the Fortius Clinic and the King Edward VII Hospital in London. After graduating from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1996, Susan completed a PhD in Molecular Biology, at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, Imperial College, London. She completed her orthopaedic specialty training on the London based North West Thames programme ( ), and during this period also completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Biomechanics from the University of Strathclyde. Her passion lies in shoulder surgery and she also undertook Fellowships in Shoulder Surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore (RNOH Stanmore). In 2013 Susan was appointed Consultant in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at RNOH Stanmore. Susan has published in both clinical and scientific peer-reviewed journals, and has presented at numerous international orthopaedic meetings. She also founded The Funky Professor.com, an online anatomy video resource, featuring Professor Vishy Mahadevan from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Leo Athanasatos BAppSc (Phty) AdipSpSc Leo Athanasatos is a Neuro-Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist with a vast range of experience working in the NHS, private practice, and sport. Leo graduated in physiotherapy from the University of Sydney Australia in 1994 and three years later was made Clinical Education Lead at the North Middlesex Hospital. Life took a change of direction in 2001 moving into the fast lane of Formula 1 motor racing. Over a six year period Leo worked with a number of teams and racing drivers including: Brackley based BAR Honda (British American Racing) home to 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve; Cologne based Toyota Panasonic Racing which has included drivers such as Ralf Schumacher and Olivier Panis and BMW Sauber Racing, reuniting with Jacques Villeneuve. Currently Leo is the Medical Director for Panis-Barthez Competition in the European Le Mans (ELMs) series which includes the famous 24hr Le Mans race. Leo has extensive teaching experience both in the UK and Europe and has a special interest in spinal, knee, shoulder and sports injuries. He is a member of the BASEM Executive Committee. Dr Peter Brukner OAM, MBBS, FACSP, FACSM, FASMF, FFSEM Peter Brukner is a specialist Sports and Exercise Physician. He is the Founding Partner at the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre in Melbourne and Team Doctor for the Australian Cricket Team. Peter is also an Associate Professor in Sports Medicine at the University of Melbourne. As a world renowned sports medicine clinician and researcher, Peter has held many high profile positions including Australian Team Physician at the Atlanta Olympic Games, Team Manager of the Australian Athletics Team at the Sydney Olympics, Head of Sports Medicine and Sports Science at Liverpool FC and Australian Team Doctor for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Peter s major area of research interest has been in overuse injuries particularly stress fractures, but he has also published widely in areas such as groin pain, exerciserelated lower leg pain, fatigue and the female athlete. He is the co-author of the best-selling Clinical Sports Medicine. Peter s contribution to Sports Medicine has been widely recognised with a number of international awards and in 2006 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to Sports Medicine. Bill Knowles ATC CSCS Bill Knowles is Director of Reconditioning and Athletic Development for HPSports in Wayne, Pennsylvania. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with 27 years of experience at Professional, Olympic, and Elite Junior levels of sport. World-renowned in the field of Sports Reconditioning and

4 Athletic Development, Bill specialises in developing Reconditioning strategies for athletes following injury. These same concepts are also designed for athletes and teams to improve performance and reduce the incidence of injury. Bill has lectured and trained staff around the world on his concepts of managing Load Compromised Athletes in their quest for a return to competition following injury. He has worked with Governing Bodies of Sport such as the Rugby Football Union, The Football Association, Australian Institute of Sport, Chinese Olympic Committee, US Soccer, US Skiing, The English Institute of Sport, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Bill has trained athletes from dozens of professional teams throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia and he also spends significant time with the Philadelphia Union s (Major League Soccer) Youth Academy and first team. Tom Robinson BSc (Hons) Tom Robinson is the Owner and Managing Director of the Excel Sports Clinic in York. He is also a guest lecturer on the BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Therapy programme at York St John University. Tom graduated from the University of Bedfordshire with a BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy in 2008 and was quickly snapped up by York City Football Club in the role of Sports Therapist. His work focused on Academy level players and, in 2012 Tom was made Head of Academy Sports Science and Medicine. He was responsible for the entire provision of Sports Science and Medicine for all age ranges, from U9 to U18. Tom spent 8 years at the football club but left in 2016 to focus on developing the Excel Clinic which he set up in His particular areas of interest are in youth athletic development, injuries affecting the youth athletic population and developing screening and preventative strategies for youth athletes. Dr Peter Thain PhD MSc BSc (Hons) Dr Peter Thain is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) and MSc in Sports Therapy at Birmingham City University. Peter graduated from the University of Hertfordshire in 2009 with a First Class Honours Degree in Sports Therapy. He continued with his studies at the University and completed his PhD in His research investigates the effect of Cryotherapy on neuromuscular control, as well as developing novel methods for analysing the dynamic defence mechanism of the ankle in response to sudden ankle perturbation. Peter gained an MSc in Physiotherapy with distinction in 2016, from University College London. He took up his post at Birmingham City University in 2016 with a specific remit to design, develop and achieve validation for their portfolio of Sports Therapy programmes. Peter remains passionate about his research with publications in peer reviewed journals, a book chapter and presentations at international conferences. As a Graduate Sports Therapist and Physiotherapist, Peter also works clinically with England Basketball, travelling throughout the UK and Europe. Johnny Wilson MSc BSc (Hons) BSc MACP PGCertEd Johnny is Head of Sports Science and Sports Medicine at Notts County FC and Managing Director and principle author for sportsmedplus.com; an educational platform designed to challenge current concepts in Sport Science & Sports Medicine. Johnny has completed undergraduate degrees in Physiotherapy and Sports Science from St George s University Hospital, University of London and St Mary s University College, Twickenham respectively, together with a PGCE in Primary Education in 2001 while at St Mary s. His thirst for knowledge is relentless and he completed a Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine at the University of Nottingham and was also awarded a Post- Graduate qualification in Manual Therapy (Upper & Lower Limb) with MACP accreditation, from the University of Birmingham in Johnny has a passion for movement analysis when assessing, diagnosing and treating injured players and is renowned for his creative, individualised, performance reconditioning programmes. He lectures on the MSc for Sports & Exercise Medicine and on the Undergraduate Physiotherapy course at the University of Nottingham. Professor Graham N. Smith GradDipPhys FCSP DipTP CertEd Professor Graham N. Smith is a Rehabilitation and Sports Injury Consultant, a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Chairman of The Society of Sports Therapists (UK) and a member of the Executive Committees of BASEM and the FMA. Graham has an extensive background in the treatment, management and rehabilitation of injuries at all levels of the sporting spectrum. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Chichester, an External Lecturer for the MSc in Sports Medicine at Trinity College, Dublin and an External Examiner on the MSc Football Rehabilitation programme at Edge Hill University. He was responsible for setting up and running the Football Association National Rehabilitation Centre at Lilleshall and he has also worked with British Olympic and representative teams, as well as in professional football. Now, alongside working in his clinic in Glasgow and consultancy commitments, he lectures extensively, nationally and internationally, on the treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and sports injury management.

5 TRAVEL DIRECTIONS TO THE LONDON HEATHROW MARRIOTT HOTEL BY CAR Take junction 4 off the M4 motorway. Follow signs for Heathrow Terminals 1, 2 & 3 via the M4/Heathrow Airport access road. Turn left at the roundabout onto Bath Road sign-posted A4/London. The Marriott Hotel is half a mile on the left after passing through two sets of traffic lights. BY LONDON TRANSPORT Take the underground Piccadilly Line train to Heathrow Central for Terminals 1, 2 & 3 (50 minutes from central London) and then the frequent shuttle (Hotel Hoppa) bus* to the hotel. BY TRAIN Take the Heathrow Express train from London Paddington Station to Heathrow Central for Terminals 1, 2 & 3 (15 minutes) and then the frequent shuttle (Hotel Hoppa) bus* to the hotel. IF ARRIVING BY AIR Take the frequent Hotel Hoppa shuttle bus* available from all Terminals to the hotel. CAR PARKING Free car parking is included in the delegate rate. 6 COURSES AND WORKSHOP PROGRAMME 2017 TUTOR: Professor Graham N Smith GradDipPhys FCSP DipTP CertEd Chartered & HCPC Registered Physiotherapist Rehabilitation and Sports Injury Consultant, Glasgow INJURIES OF THE HIP AND GROIN A ONE DAY WORKSHOP FOR THERAPISTS Saturday 8th July 2017 Holiday Inn, Glasgow Airport Aims: To give therapists an understanding of the functional (and regional) anatomy of the hip and groin. Also, to identify the common injuries and problems likely to be encountered in this tightly packed anatomical region, including those of a pathological/inflammatory cause. The course will further aim to give an understanding of the principles of rehabilitation and treatments for patients with hip & groin injuries. Whilst specifically focused on musculoskeletal problems, the principles taught and demonstrated can be applied to all spheres of therapeutic practice, including rheumatology, paediatrics & sports injuries Cost: 125 inclusive of (Non-residential) MANUAL THERAPY & MOBILISATIONS OF THE CERVICAL & THORACIC SPINE Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th August 2017 Holiday Inn, Glasgow Airport Aims: The aim of this course is to introduce the basic concepts and techniques of mobilisations & manual therapy techniques for the cervical & thoracic vertebrae. Comprehensive examination and assessment procedures for each of the above will also be taught. The course is predominately practical with sessions devoted to problem solving and treatment/technique practice. Cost: 250 inclusive of (Non-residential) MANUAL THERAPY & MOBILISATIONS OF THE LUMBAR SPINE & SACROILIAC JOINTS Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th October 2017 Holiday Inn, Glasgow Airport Aims: The aim of this course is to introduce the basic concepts and techniques of mobilisations & manual therapy techniques for the lumbar vertebrae and sacroiliac joints. Comprehensive examination and assessment procedures for each of the above areas are also taught.
