3 From Pain to Performance 2018 SPEAKERS The aim of the 2018 Symposium is to address current and contemporary issues in the prevention, treatment, management and rehabilitation of trauma and injuries in a sport and exercise context. The renowned speakers are all recognised experts in their specific areas of expertise and all work at the cutting edge of evidence based orthopaedic and musculoskeletal medicine. The speakers will aim to disseminate what they perceive as being the key message and priorities within their own particular area of Sport and Exercise Medicine. The programme will also allow delegates to question and challenge the topics covered and to be a part of an innovative and exciting event. Dr Michael Turner MBBS FFSEM Dr Michael Turner is the Medical Director of The International Concussion and Head Injury Research Foundation (ICHIRF) and recently retired as Chief Medical Adviser (CMA) to the Lawn Tennis Association; a post he held since He retired as CMA to British Horseracing in 2013, after 21 years in office, and was formerly CMA to the British Snowsports ( ) and a member of the Medical Committee of FIS (International Ski Federation). He was the Director of Medical Services at the British Olympic Association ( ) and Team GB Medical Officer at the Calgary 1988, Albertville 1992 and Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympic Games. His main areas of interest include safety in high risk sports, protective equipment in sport, child protection, concussion and anti-doping. He is currently a member of the WADA TUE Expert Group, and a member of the UKAD Independent TUE Review Panel. He is devoted to research into the possible long-term effects of concussion amongst retired sportsmen and women. Mr Emir Battaloglu MB ChB MRCS Mr Emir Battaloglu is a Specialist Registrar in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He graduated from the University of Birmingham and completed his Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Bath. Emir is passionate about American Football and he has been able to combine his medical career with his sporting prowess. Emir has been the Great Britain American Football Team Doctor since 2010 and has twice been a British Collegiate American football champion with the University of Birmingham Lions. He has also represented Great Britain Lions since 2006 and been part of the GB Lion s Men s Senior Roster for the 2010, 2013 and 2016 European Championships. As a player and a medical professional it places him in an ideal position to talk about spinal injuries in American Football and sport. Nic Perrem MSc BSc (Hons) MSST Nic Perrem is a Lecturer in Sport Rehabilitation at St Mary s University, Twickenham, London. He completed his undergraduate studies in Sports Therapy at the University of St. Mark and St. John and gained his Masters degree in Sports Injury Management from the University of Brighton. Nic works at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and he is currently engaged in a number of research projects examining factors related to lower limb injury and motor control. He is currently studying for his PhD, examining post traumatic early onset knee Osteoarthritis. Nic has worked as a Sports Therapist in a variety of settings with a diverse range of athletes and has also worked in private practice. He is a Graduate Member of The Society of Sports Therapists and an active member of the Knee Injury Control and Clinical Advancement (KICCA) research group. Dave Fevre MSc (Sports Physiotherapy) Dave Fevre is a freelance Physiotherapist with a background steeped in elite sport. Based in Blackburn Lancashire, Dave s association with professional sport began in 1984 with Leigh Rugby League, following a number of years working in the NHS. Five years later he moved to Wigan Rugby League and whilst there, he also took on the Great Britain Rugby League physiotherapy role. In 1994 he made the move into football with Manchester United. This period saw United win numerous trophies including the FA and European Cups, the Premiership title and the World Club Championship. Not content to sit back, he moved to Blackburn Rovers in 1999 where he remained until During that time he undertook an MSc and also took on the role of Physiotherapist to the Wales national team. Dave lectures extensively both nationally and internationally on sports injury rehabilitation and is the author of the book Collision Sports Injury and Repair. He is also an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Salford.

4 From Pain to Performance 2018 SPEAKERS (continued) Claire Small M Phty St MMACP PG Cert in Non Medical Prescribing Claire Small is the Owner and Clinical Director at Pure Sports Medicine, which opened in London in Claire has both an Undergraduate and Masters Degrees in Physiotherapy from the University of Queensland, Australia and she is a Fellow of the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists. She has sat on both the National Executive and the Education and Training Committees of the Manipulation Association of Chartered Physiotherapists, and lectures both nationally and internationally on topics such as Manual Therapy, spinal, hip and pelvic pain. She is an Honorary Lecturer and Examiner at Queen Mary University of London, an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of London and University College London, and an invited lecturer at Kings College, London and the University of Bath. Claire is also a Journal Reviewer for Manual Therapy, Physical Therapy in Sport and the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Her clinical interests include Movement Dysfunction, Hips, Groin and Lumbo-pelvic Dysfunction, and her research interests include groin pain & pathology, including athletic groin pain. Dr Craig Ranson PhD Dr Craig Ranson is Director of Athlete Health for the English Institute of Sport (EIS). He joined the EIS from his posts of Director of the MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Cardiff Metropolitan University, and Physiotherapist with the Wales Rugby Team. His previous posts include UK Athletics Chief Physiotherapist and National Lead Physiotherapist to the England and Wales Cricket Board. Craig has consulted to a variety of sporting organisations including the International Cricket Council and the Sports Medicine Department of the University of the West Indies. Craig studied at Curtin University, Western Australia where he gained his PhD in Sports Physiotherapy in He has a strong sports injury management and prevention research profile and is widely published. He has co-authored a number of publications and lectures both nationally and internationally. Martin Colclough OBE Martin Colclough is Head of Sports Recovery for the Charity Help for Heroes (H4H); a role which he took up in Martin served in the Army, firstly in the Parachute Regiment followed by the Royal Army Physical Training Corps (RAPTC). He trained as a Joint Service Remedial Instructor at the Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital, Woolwich and holds a Masters Degree in Rehabilitation and Research from Southampton University. During a career break in 2006/7 he became the Senior Paralympic Performance Manager at UK Athletics and he was a member of the Paralympics GB Core Staff for the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Paralympic Games. He was also the Team Manager for the UK Armed Forces Team at the 2015 and 2016 Invictus Games. Martin s role today with H4H is to develop and deliver adaptive sport and adventurous training opportunities for wounded, injured and sick personnel to help maintain an active and independent lifestyle, participate in competitive sport and through the delivery of vocational training courses. Professor Graham N. Smith GradDipPhys FCSP DipTP CertED Professor Graham N. Smith is a Rehabilitation and Sports Injury Consultant, a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Chairman of The Society of Sports Therapists (UK) and a member of the Executive Committees of BASEM and the FMA. Graham has an extensive background in the treatment, management and rehabilitation of injuries at all levels of the sporting spectrum. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Chichester, an External Lecturer for the MSc in Sports Medicine at Trinity College, Dublin and an External Examiner at Edge Hill University. He was responsible for setting up and running the Football Association National Rehabilitation Centre at Lilleshall and he has also worked with British Olympic and representative teams, as well as in professional football. Graham was also invited to give a workshop at the Fifth Edition, Olympic Academic Programme of Sport, Medicine and Sports Physiotherapy in the London 2012 Olympic Village. Now, alongside working in his clinic in Glasgow and consultancy commitments, he lectures extensively nationally and internationally.

Also, to identify the common injuries and problems likely to be encountered in this tightly packed anatomical region, including those of a pathological/inflammatory cause. The course will further aim to give an understanding of the principles of rehabilitation and treatments for patients with hip and groin injuries. Whilst specifically focused on musculoskeletal problems, the principles taught and demonstrated can be applied to all spheres of therapeutic practice, including rheumatology, paediatrics and sports injuries.
