2 INTRODUCTION Justification of the Study In every literary works always there are many things that can be found. It is because the graspment of literature that is not always focused on only one thing. And one of the thing that can be found in a literary work is science. Such as psychology, psychology is a thing that cannot be separated and always stick in every literary works. Based on that understanding, the writer feels need to research the psychological side in a literary work. As an object of this research, the writer chooses a novel entitled Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from the author Robert Louis Stevenson. The writer chooses that novel, because the writer wants to analyze and to find out the psychological aspects of the figure Dr. Jekyll. The psychological aspects that experienced by Dr. Jekyll maked himself did an experiment to divide two characters of himself and maked him commits to suicide. And as a result he became someone that really different than before named Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde is very different from Dr. Jekyll, because He always does something bad, even killed a person. That is why the writer feels interested to analyze and to understand the psychological aspects of Dr.Jekyll. The writer also thought that with analyze the psychological aspects of Dr. Jekyll, the writer can give knowledge about psychology in a literary work.

3 Previous research Yulistiyanti. (2007) Wife s Betrayal in Short Story An Imaginative Woman by Thomas Hardy : A Study of Feminism Psychoanalysis. The conclusion of her research is some actions of Ella Marchmill are drawing different woman by loving another man behind her husband, and became a person who makes poem. Main character, Ella Marchmill experiences unfair behavior from patriarchy society. The actions of Ella Marchmill are resistance of role of the woman in Victorian era that very strong with patriarchy ideology. Lya Zulfa Hanum. (2011) Lesbianism Aspect of Celie in Novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker. The conclusion of her research is lesbianism of Celie is seen from her way to behave Shug Avery. She loves Shug like a man that loves a woman that usually she finds in love pattern in common society. At the beginning, Celie confused because she has different sexual orientation than another people, but finally she can received that thing and can enjoy it. Lesbianism aspects that can be found in Celie are the first is clinical description aspect about lesbian. Those are emotional interest and sexual interest. Emotional interest consist of feeling of love and feeling comfort of Shug. And sexual interest begins from interest of Celie sexualically to Shug that finally refers to sexual behavior. Celie and Shug stimulated each other the part of their body to get sexual comfortable. Second is the aspect of transhistorical tradition that relates lesbian woman, it is a woman that makes relation with another woman but still married with a man for the reasons of economy and procreative.

4 Previous research Bustami Subhan. (2006) Sociocultural Study of The Text of Drama Death of Salesman by Arthur Miller. The conclusion of this research is that text of the drama contains of moral symbols and moral values such as the need of examples, hardwork, creative, honest, thrifty, and moral. The text of this drama also give examples of tragedy that maybe can be happened to another family because of the factors like too ambisious to get dream, immorality, the stuck of creativity, innovation in business, the dangerous of modernization, the competition in business or economy in big city like New York.

5 Position of the Research The first research above is a research about a wife s betrayal of Ella Marchmill in short story An Imaginative Woman by Thomas Hardy. It is a research of feminism psychoanalysis. The second research above is a research about lesbianism aspects of Celie in novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker. It is a research of Lesbianism. The third research above is a research of the text of drama Death of Salesman by Arthur Miller. It is a research of sociocultural. The writer s research is a research about psychological analysis on the character of Henry Jekyll in novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. So the writer s research is a research of a character in a literary work from the perspective of psychology.

6 Problem Formulation Based on the background of study above, can be formulated the following problems : What is the psychological aspect that makes Dr. Jekyll experiment himself into two? What are the causes that make Dr. Jekyll commits suicide?

7 Research Method Research Method In this study, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method. Techniques of Collecting Data Read the novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Underlined the quotations or the statements that related by the problems. Put the data into a piece of paper. Techniques of Analyzing Data 1. Classified the data to the related problems. 2. Verified the data to the related theories.

8 Result of Study 1. The psychological aspect that makes Dr. Jekyll experiment himself into two Men have before hired bravos to transact their crimes, while their own person and reputation sat under shelter. I was the first that ever did so for his pleasures. I was the first that could thus plod in the public eye with load of genial respectability, and in a moment, like a schoolboy, strip off these lendings and spring headlong into the sea of liberty. But for me, in my impenetrable mantle, the safety was complete. (Jekyll, 1991:46) 2. The causes that make Dr. Jekyll commits suicide It is useless, and the time awfully fails me, to prolong this description; no one has ever suffered such torments, let that suffice; and yet even to these, habit brought no, not alleviation but a certain callousness of soul, a certain acquiescence of despair; and my punishment might have gone on for years, but for the last calamity which has now befallen, and which has finally severed me from my own face and nature. (Jekyll, 1991:54) Half an hour from now, when shall and again and forever reinduce that hated personality, I know how I shall sit shuddering and weeping in my chair, or continue, with the most strained and fear struck ecstasy of listening, to pace up and down this room (my last earthly refuge) and give ear to every sound of menace. Will Hyde die upon the scaffold? Or will he find the courage to release himself at the last moment? God knows; I am careless; this is my true hour of death, and what is to follow concerns another than myself. Here, then, as I lay down the pen, and proceed to seal up my confession I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end. (Jekyll, 1991:54)

9 Conclusion & Suggestion Conclusion The result of this research about the psychological aspects that make Dr. Jekyll did an experiment to divide two characters of himself in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the aspect of struggle to superiority side. That aspect can be seen from the will of Dr. Jekyll that direct to an effort to get the excellence, happiness, and pleasure of life, because he did his experiment for the reason to get excellence, happiness and pleasure of life. The causes or that makes Dr. Jekyll commits to suicide because in his life he felt suffered and unhappy. That causes can be seen from after he did his experiment and changed to Edward Hyde, he often felt his life was suffered and unhappy. Suggestion After reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the writer found about psychology. In this chapter, the writer suggests to the readers or the next researchers to analyze from another perspective of novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
