1 Topic Dimensions of health Duration 1-50 minute class period Purpose To create an awareness of the multiple aspects of health. Materials Dimensions of Health Overview Dimensions of Health Worksheet Michigan Health Standard Objectives The students will be able to: Explain how behaviors affect different components of health. Assessment of Objectives Collect Dimensions of Health worksheet. Students will be given one point per correct answer. Preparation None Anticipatory Set Ask students what they think of when they hear the word health. Take some answers. Ask students if any of them have ever been in a situation that has affected their health. Discuss. Pass out Dimensions Overview & read together. Modeling Use a personal situation to explain how health was affected. An example may be, I woke up late this morning. I didn t get a chance to eat a healthy breakfast, I was stressed because I was running late, I snapped at my kids, etc. Then identify how each of these affects each dimension. Check for Understanding Ask students if they have any examples they would like to share. Take just a few. Guided Practice Pass out Dimensions worksheet. Students will complete the worksheet in class. After worksheets are complete, ask students to share their reasoning.

2 Closure Show students how a balance in each dimension keeps one healthy. Using a top, explain that each dimension is represented by an equal section of the top. Spin the top, and allow students to see the balance for themselves. Then, touch the moving top, saying because of a choice I made, my physical health is in jeopardy. The top will spin out of control or stop. Repeat until students understand the representation. Adaptations/Differentiation This lesson is appropriate for all learners.

3 Health is: The ever changing process of achieving individual potential in the physical, mental, social, emotional environmental and spiritual dimensions. Wellness is: The achievement of the highest level of health possible in each of the dimensions of health. There are SIX Dimensions of Health: Social Mental Physical Emotional Spiritual Environmental

Health Decision making Ability to remember, interpret and reason Solve problems Sense, perceive, evaluate what is happening Attach positive or negative meaning Creativity/ curiosity Health The feeling you- how you express your feelings The ability to express emotions, or the ability to control emotions when appropriate 4 basic feelings- mad, sad, glad and afraid/fear Affects social interactions Health Ability to have a broad and satisfying social network Ability to adapt to social situations Communicating with, respecting and valuing people Have a wide range of social interactions with family, friends, acquaintances and individuals with whom they may only have occasional contact Listening, expressing yourself appropriately, forming healthy relationships, act in socially acceptable and responsible ways Numerous studies= importance of social life for our health Which is more valuable, quantity or quality? Health The condition of the body (body size, shape, level of fitness, etc.) The doing you the active you How your body is functioning How you react and cope with stress Deals with your diet, drugs, personal hygiene, sleep, injury and illness

5 Health NOT the same as religion Element that gives zest to life Belief in some unifying force that gives purpose or meaning in life Feeling of one-ness with others and nature Takes time and experience to acquire Guides us in our quest for understanding and meaning in life Health The role you play in preserving, protecting and improving the environment. Belief that we all have a responsibility and connection to the world around us.

Getting involved in a local youth club 15. Eating a well balanced diet 16. Ability to make decisions 17. Being fully vaccinated
