Time dimension: Destination Safety and Security for almost eternity for the foreseeable future (respondent 1 and 4) was always an important topic, now and in the future, more than ever (respondent 5) Consequences: eroding one of the symbolic pillars of Western civilization, hospitality (respondent 2) became the new norm (respondent 6) travel styles may change with more sharp cleavages between cosmopolitans and locally bounded people (respondent 8) Souce: own survey 2017

7 Destination Safety and Security Do you think that actors (e.g. tour operator, destination) of the tourism industry are adequately prepared to handle the problem? What are the major deficits? Tour operator: no, many are even afraid to utter the word (respondent 1) much of their activities are reactive rather than proactive (respondent 4) country dependent responsibility of governments (respondent 7) tourists should be more regularly informed (respondent 8) Destinations: impossible to do well enough (respondent 4) security issues can cross borders tourists and terrorists don t see borders (respondent 6) Souce: own survey 2017

8 Destination Safety and Security What do customers expect from the tourism industry concerning safety and security? Expectations: 100% safety and security, this is impossible to fulfill (respondent 1) very difficult to respond each person is a world in itself (respondents 2 and 8) customer expects the information to be communicated to them as clearly and accurately as possible (respondents 4 and 6) Solutions: proactive prevention actions and post attack recovery programs (respondent 1) industry is prepared with strong safety and contingency plans (respondents 5 and 6) tourists need to be educated (respondent 7) Souce: own survey 2017

Are customers willing to pay a higher price for greater safety? yes, but do not nickel and dime (respondent 1) yes, I think that many customers are willing to pay higher prices, mainly in airports, transportations, hotels (respondent 5) no, this isn t the solution (respondent 7) yes and no (respondent 8) No-gos: the worst thing is to add two euros here and two euros there (respondent 1) it would be ill-advised to put a specific price supplement (respondent 4) Souce: own survey 2017
