8 Keynote and Panel Biographies Dr Mary Welford Dr Mary Welford is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist working throughout the UK. She is a founding member and Chair of the Compassionate Mind Foundation. Working with a range of people on an individual and group basis, Mary is particularly interested in the application of Compassion Focused Therapy across the spectrum of human experiences, from anxiety and depression to psychosis and personality difficulties. She is the author of The Compassionate Mind Approach to Building Your Self Confidence. Professor Tony Morrison Tony Morrison is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Manchester and is also Associate Director for Early Intervention at Greater Manchester West Mental Health Foundation Trust. He has published over 100 articles on cognitive therapy for psychosis and experimental studies of cognitive processes in psychosis, including an influential cognitive model of psychosis, and has conducted several treatment trials of cognitive therapy for psychosis and for people at high risk of psychosis. He has also published several treatment manuals. He has also conducted research examining the links between trauma and psychosis and has explored issues of patient choice and the facilitation of user-led research into psychosis and mental health services. He is director of the Psychosis Research Unit at Greater Manchester West Mental Health Foundation Trust Professor Paul Salkovskis Professor Paul Salkovskis is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Applied Science. In 2010 he was appointed Programme Director for the Clinical Psychology Doctorate Programme at Bath. Previously he was Professor of Clinical Psychology and Applied Science and Clinical Director in the Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma at the Institute of Psychiatry ( ) Virtual Therapy: An Interactive Story-Driven Environment for the Clinical Rehabilitation of People with Acquired Brain Injuries (Zack Lyons and Leon Watts, Department of Computer Science, University of Bath; Praminda Caleb-Solly and Nigel Harris, Designability and Brian O Neill and Sara da Silva Ramos, Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust, The Disabilities Trust) Severe instances of acquired brain injury can lead to difficulties with executive control, which leads to intensive periods of rehabilitative care under close supervision. Such intensive supervision typically requires segregation from the community with limited opportunity for social engagement, which predicts poor post-care reintegration. Our research is examining the potential of immersive virtual reality for presenting service users with meaningful opportunities to develop and practice social skills. We are creating an interactive task-driven environment to be used by clinicians as a therapeutic medium for engaging with a service user, complementing other interventions at their disposal. The environment can be used to deliver dynamic dialogue and functional challenges in real time under the control of a clinical professional.
