4 Generally not need to understand past to change current behavior. Start at here and now and work backwards Some clients may be stuck on past; look when: Client unable to progress, focused on understanding the past Client says things like I ve always been that way, others report As long as I ve known him, he has been like that

5 Look at behavior/skill building: behavior change can lead to changes in thinking (ex. self-efficacy). Self-esteem: global assessment of our selfworth, How we feel about ourselves Self-efficacy determines: 1. If we will try new behavior 2. Effort we will put into the new behavior 3. If will persist at new behavior when confronted by obstacles and problems 4. How we feel about 1-3.

8 Thinking patterns are habits of thought types of thoughts a person uses so often that they just seem to come naturally. You will notice that some criminal and addictive thinking patterns are very similar or even the same. That s because criminality and addiction are both, to a large degree, thinking problems before they become behavior problems.

9 Victim stance/self-pity stance Good person stance Unique person stance Fear of exposure Lack of trust Lack of time perspective Selective effort Use of power and control Use of deceit to control Seeks excitement/pleasure first Ownership stance.

10 How you act based on what you think Often refer to habits of behavior Broken into 3 categories Avoidance strategies Diversion strategies Aggression strategies

11 Used to avoid responsibility, put in minimal effort, avoid exposure, and manipulate others to get what you want Includes: Lying by omission or commission (passive and active lying) Being deliberately vague Staying silent to avoid notice (flying under the radar) False compliance (compliance w/o commitment) Playing dumb Selective memory and attention Minimizing (trivializing)

12 Used to confuse others, direct attention away from you and/or important issues, and avoid exposure by keeping people distracted and focused on other things Includes: Pointing Out the Faults of Others Magnifying (exaggerating significance) Deliberately Trying to Confuse Quibbling Over Words Introducing Irrelevant Issues Discussing Smokescreen Issues Using Self-Shaming to Avoid Responsibility

13 Used to attack, intimidate, and undermine others Includes: Arguing Using Threatening Words or Behaviors (veiled or overt) Raging Sarcasm and Teasing Splitting Staff Creating Chaos Attention Seeking

16 Event: Just the Facts Who, what, when, and where of the situation The event should be something the client experienced The event should be current. Having occurred after the last thinking report the client completed Thoughts: Must be distorted and maladaptive Should be the first initial unfiltered thoughts the client thinks during the event Feelings Should be the feelings the client experiences during the event, not after the event Behavior A. Should be the behavior that occurs after the thoughts
