1 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR DISASTER PERSONALITY World Issues: Disaster, crisis, emergency preparation Functional II Suggesting Imperative, modals, vocabulary Time magazine Carla Liau-Hing Pictures in color, everything else black and white Describe the pictures. What could have caused the damage? Does it look like there can be survivors? There is a lot of destruction and great damage. It might be caused by an earthquake, tornado, hurricane, a bomb, etc. It looks like there are no survivors. Ask Ss to predict what the article is going to be about. The article is going to give advice on how to be more prepared in case we are faced with a catastrophe. Hand out second sheet and Have Ss read the first paragraph and confirm predictions. Ask Ss to come up with the five ways. Hand out third sheet and have them compare their answers to the five titles. Ask them to do the activity (Choose titles) Answers: 1

Tell the reader what to do or consider in case of an emergency. Students match the words to their meanings. Answers: A-5, B-1, C-3, D-7, E-2, F-8, G-6, H-4 Ask Ss what structures are used when trying to recommend what to do. Make Ss to look for some examples in the article and underline them. - Imperative (Paragraph 4 & 5): Get, consider, go into, walk down, pack, make. - Modals (Paragraph 1): can (x3), may. (Paragraph 2): can, may. (Paragraph 3): can. (Paragraph 5): could Oral summary based on activity 1, 2, and 3 What kind of natural disasters are common in Lima? 4 HOW TO SURVIVE A DISASTER Disasters are becoming more frequent and more costly. But there are steps all of us can take right now to improve our chances of survival. BY AMANDA RIPLEY 5 Ways to Improve Your Disaster Personality We all have ideas about how we might handle an emergency. And we re probably wrong. People who are leaders or basket cases in everyday life often won t behave that same way in a crisis. But we do know there are ways to become more resilient, and they don t all involve luck or prayer (although those are good too). 4

People who respond well to trauma tend to have three underlying advantages: a belief that they can influence events, an ability to find meaningful purpose in life's turmoil and a conviction that they can learn from positive and negative experiences. This may be largely a matter of genetic makeup, but it is possible to teach yourself to be more proactive and avoid the victimization trap ("if it happens to me, there's nothing I can do"). 2. Sometimes a small amount of information can help us tap into a vein of resilience we didn't know we had. Did you know that most serious plane accidents are survivable? The statistics are clear: of all passengers involved in serious accidents between 1983 and 2000, 56% survived. Once we know that one fact, we may become more attentive to in-flight safety briefings, which in turn can help us move faster to get out of a plane should we ever need too. 3. Research into scuba-diving and firefighting accidents has shown that people with generally high anxiety levels tend to overreact to extreme stress. Their brains, overwhelmed by the situation, sort through their database of responses and choose the wrong one (Like pulling the breathing apparatus out of their mouth underwater). But certain coping devices-like controlled, rhythmic breathing- can keep anxiety under control. Many police officers are now trained to do such breathing whenever their guns are drawn. 4. Get in shape! The cruel reality of physics is that overweight people move more slowly and need more space, so they have more trouble fleeing. On 9/11, people with low physical abilities were three times as likely to be hurt while evacuating the Towers. 5. The best way to improve performance is to practice. Consider what you are most afraid of (or, even better, which risks are most statistically relevant to you). If you work in a skyscraper, go into the stairway on a regular basis. Walk down to the ground a few times a year. If you live in a hurricane alley, pack a suitcase and make a plan for evacuating your family. It could make a difference. 5
