2 The University of Alberta and Stollery Children s Hospital are home to the largest pediatric cardiology and pediatric cardiac surgical programs in Western Canada. Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, adjacent to the Stollery Children s Hospital. Dr. Jayani Abeysekera, Resident The residency training program in pediatric cardiology at the Stollery Children s Hospital is a three-year program, fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The Division of Cardiology has 17 staff cardiologists with expertise in all cardiology subspecialties. Subspecialties include invasive electrophysiology, interventional catheterization, heart failure, transplant cardiology, pulmonary hypertension, and echocardiography including internationallyrecognized expertise in 3D echo and fetal imaging. More than 10,000 echocardiograms and 1,700 fetal echocardiograms are performed annually. The program is the major surgical referral center for the Western Canadian Children s Heart Network, with four pediatric cardiovascular surgeons performing more than 700 operations per year, spanning the full range of pediatric cardiac surgical procedures. Both the Stollery Ventricular Assist Device Program and Cardiac Thrombosis Program (KidCLOT) are recognized internationally.

3 Curriculum Our training program is adopting a competency-based curriculum. Training involves rotations through all disciplines of pediatric cardiology including ward, echo, consults, clinics, imaging, surgery, research, heart function and transplant, pathology, pediatric cardiac ICU, and adult cardiology. Fellowship Training After completion of the three-year residency, additional (optional) subspecialty fellowship training is available to internal and external candidates in: Echocardiography including 3D imaging Fetal echocardiography Cardiac electrophysiology Heart function and transplantation including mechanical support Pulmonary hypertension Cardiac catheterization Adult congenital cardiology Advanced imaging (MRI) Where our graduates are today Dr. Michael Khoury, Resident

4 Research All cardiology residents take on a research project that they are expected to present at a national or international meeting and publish in a peer reviewed journal. Three to eight months of research time is available within the threeyear program. Resident research is supported by a scholarship oversight committee. Our diverse research infrastructure allows for many opportunities in clinical, basic review, and translational research. 5 Key Facts Our cardiac surgical volume has the ninth highest volume among all programs in North America. Compared to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) database, our survival statistics are superior in all surgical categories.
