3 Course Description The purpose of this educational activity is to update the primary care community on the latest advances in cardiovascular care. Through a combination of lectures, panel discussions and a live case broadcast, participants will be better equipped to evaluate patients with cardiac disease and assess treatment options. Esselstyn Jr., MD, FACS Dr. Esselstyn earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from Western Reserve University. He was trained as a general surgeon at Cleveland Clinic and St. George s Hospital in London. Dr. Esselstyn has been associated with Cleveland Clinic since There, he has served as President of the Staff and as a member of the Board of Governors. He also has chaired the clinic s Breast Cancer Task Force and headed its Section of Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery. He currently serves as the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute s director of cardiovascular prevention and reversal program. Dr. Esselstyn has published more than 150 scientific articles and has received many honors, including being named President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, becoming the first recipient of the Benjamin Spock Award for Compassion in Medicine and receiving the 2013 Yale University George H.W. 6 Educational Objectives Identify the cause of cardiovascular disease and how to halt and reverse it Define advanced heart failure and risk factors for increased heart failure mortality Describe components of a mechanical circulatory support program and identify appropriate candidates for advanced heart failure therapies Summarize the current evidence for durable left ventricular assist devices Review the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association clinical practice guidelines and incorporate the most recent updates Identify when a patient is most likely to benefit from device therapy Discuss the role of invasive treatments in the management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy Differentiate absorbable stents from drug-eluting stents and bare metal stents, including their clinical indications and characteristics Describe the clinical outcomes, benefits and risks of TAVR compared to surgical aortic valve replacement; identify future applications of transcatheter therapies Demonstrate alcohol septal ablation procedure for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy Describe the rationale for novel anticoagulation use and identify candidates.
