DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM (catalog copy): This post-masters certificate program in advanced pain management for nurse anesthetists is comprised of a classroom component offered via distance education (didactic education) and a clinical component (hands-on clinical experience offered through one or more clinical sites). 2
3 This program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) and meets or exceeds the COA Fellowship Standards. The goal of this postgraduate program is to approach pain management holistically by addressing the treatment of pain in ways that ultimately seek to restore normal homeostatic well-being. When a return to normal and healthy regulation is not possible, the fellow will seek to provide comfort, hope and meaning to support a patient s highest potential of human functioning. SUPPORTING EVIDENCE OR JUSTIFICATION (For a new program attach a statement of the mission and objectives of the new program): The mission of the program is to educate Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) to be competent providers of care to patients who suffer from chronic pain. The purpose of the Advanced Pain Management program is to educate and prepare advanced pain management practitioners to deliver holistic pain management care, including comprehensive pain 3
4 management interventions and patient education. The objective of the program is to prepare CRNAs to enter this subspecialty of nurse anesthesia practice and to successfully pass the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) subspecialty certification examination for Nonsurgical Pain Management (NSPM). The NSPM credential program measures the knowledge, skills, and abilities of NBCRNA-certified registered nurse anesthetists for practice in the NSPM field ( The outcomes for graduates of the Advanced Pain Management Program are: Spinal Anatomy for Fluoroscopic-guided Interventions The Fellow will demonstrate knowledge of the following planes of view: Anterior/Posterior Oblique Lateral Caudal/Cephalad Vertebral bodies Discs (Intervertebral) Pedicles Inferior Articular Process Superior Articular Process Spinous Process Transverse Process Interlaminar Foramen Neuroforamen The Dural sac Major muscle groups related to the spine Major vessels surrounding the spine Lumbarized segment Sacralized segment Lumbar body Identify following anatomy under fluoroscopy: Identify the following anatomy: Advance Imaging Review: The Fellow will identify the following structures: Anterior longitudinal ligament Posterior longitudinal ligament 4

Patients presenting with the following types of pain must be included: Neuropathic pain Visceral pain Myofascial pain Bone pain Sympathetic pain (CRPS I, II) 5
6 Psychogenic pain Headache disorder Fibromyalgia Electrical injury The following syndromes/conditions must also be included: Special populations: The same will be performed for five patients within the specialpopulation category: Cancer pain/hospice Pediatric pain Occupational injury/workman s compensation 6
7 The program is comprised of 9 online courses and 3 clinical practicums for a total of 22 credit hours. The curriculum model for the Pain Management Program: Describe the intended outcomes of the course or program and how they will be assessed. 1. At the completion of the program, the student demonstrates knowledge and skills required of the area of specialty practice or concentration. Academic success is measured throughout the Program and is memorialized as course grades for each student in their permanent academic transcript. Clinical success is monitored through direct clinical mentorship and evaluation. Both formative and summative evaluation is employed to validate the demonstration of knowledge and skills. Each semester, the clinical mentor is solicited to identify: If the student s clinical performance is acceptable and they recommend progression to the next semester If the weaknesses are identified and noted, but progression is acceptable to the next semester with plans for corrective action If the student s clinical performance is unacceptable and they do not recommend progression to the next semester 7
8 2. At the completion of the program, the student demonstrates attainment of objectives/outcomes identified by the Fellowship. Terminal success for the clinical portion of the program is measured against the published Comprehensive Clinical Outcomes Measurement content. Attainment of didactic objectives is determined course-by-course by faculty through the assessment of successful completion. Only Fellows who meet or exceed performance standards in each of these areas will be recommended for graduation. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES REQUIRED: None This program is developed in partnership with the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (Point of Contact: Bruce A.
