2 INTRODUCTION OF PHYSIOLOGY DEPARTMENT About the Department: Department of Physiology, GMC Aurangabad is involved in teaching the basic science subject of Physiology concerned with normal functioning and regulation of body systems to the students of I MBBS, BDS, BSc Basic Nursing & BPMT Courses. Department is also recognized for postgraduate teaching in Physiology. Department of Physiology is providing clinical services like PFT & Semen Analysis to patients referred from hospital side (GMCH Aurangabad) Department of Physiology is involved in different research activities related to Exercise Physiology, Reproductive Biology, Neurophysiology and related disciplines. Medical Education Unit of the Institute is chaired by Professor & Head, Department of Physiology. Faculty Development Programs approved by Medical Council of India are conducted by the Medical Education Unit and department in association with the Nodal centre of Medical Education Technology i.e. GS Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai Objective: Objectives of the department include teaching the students about the functions and mechanism of action of body systems like cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, reproductive systems and their role in maintenance of homeostasis for proper body functioning. Students are taught regarding normal values and range of various parameters related to physiological functioning of body. Applied aspects are taught to make them understand the degree of deviation of various parameters and their mechanism in conditions of clinical disorders. Clinical skills are taught to make the students competent in physical examination of patients. Research orientation is provided to the postgraduate students. Patient related services like Pulmonary Function Tests and Semen Analysis are also provided by the department.

30 MEDICAL EDUCATION UNIT As per MCI norms a Medical Education Unit was established on 28/09/2001 in Govt. Medical College, Aurangabad. The Unit has conducted following programs for the benefit of students / Faculty. Activities undertaken : 1) A Regional Workshop on Medical Education & Teaching Technology Was organized on 23 rd March,2002 in Department of Physiology,Govt.Medical College,Aurangabad.45 delegates from the Marathwada Region attended the Workshop. 2) Internship Evaluation Programme was held under the Chairmanship of Dr.P.Y. Mulay (Associate Professor in Medicine) in June, ) A meeting was held on Improvement of results of I,II and III MBBS Students under the Chairmanship of Dr.Anil Joshi,A.P. in Pathology in July ) A Workshop on Medical Education and Teaching Technology was organized on 8 th & 9 th October,2002 in the Department of Medicine, Govt. Medical College,Aurangabad.40 delegates attended the Workshop. 5) A Three Day Workshop on Research Methodology was conducted on ] 15 th, 16 th & 17 th April, 2004 in Department of P.S.M. Conference Hall. 40 delegates including delegates from the M.G.M. Medical College, Aurangabad and I.G. Medical College, Nagpur attended the Workshop. 6) Guest Lecture on Know Your Enmotions was organized by Dr.Anand Nadkarni on 12 th January, ) Workshop on Medical Education Technology was conducted from 17 th to 19 th July,2008. No. of participants were 70 from Govt. Medical College, Aurangabad, Dhule and Govt. Dental College Hospital,Aurangabad. 8) One month Soft Skill Training Programme for Residents was organized from 5 th of July, participant were participated in the Training Programme. 9) Two Workshop on Research Methodology were organized by the P.S.M. Department under M.E.T. Call Nov rd to 25 th Nov. attended by 54 participants and 1 st to 3 rd Dec attended by 38 participants.

31 10) A C,M.E. on Hemophilia Diagnosis, complication & Treatment was held on 25 th Feb.2012 in collaboration with Hemophilia Federation India, Hemophilia Society Aurangabad Chapter was attended by 60 participants. 11) Two MCI recognized Basic Course in Medical Education Technology Workshop were conducted on 16 th,to 18 th April 2013 & 21 st to 23 rd October 2013.

32 FUTURE PLANS 1) Sports Physiology: The Department plans to further develop the Exercise Physiology Laboratory & start Certificate course in Sports Physiology. 2) Sleep Study Laboratory: The department plans to establish Polysomnography laboratory for sleep studies.
