1 Future Academies Primary Schools Knowledge Aspiration Respect Dear Parents and Carers, Libertas Per Cultum Headteacher: Mrs C. Jefferson Newsletter 2018 What a wonderful term it has been so far, and how quickly it has gone! We are very pleased to announce our KS1 and EYFS play this term, Eddie the Penguin Saves the World. The play is all about recycling and looking after our environment. The performance will be on Thursday 13th at 2pm. KS2 will put on a performance at the end of the year. Year 4 had a very successful trip to Sayers Croft last week! Please see inside the newsletter for lots of photos. If you would like to learn about their trip, please come to our assembly on Friday 14th at 9am. We especially encourage parents of children in Year 3, so you know what to expect for next year! Year 1 learned a lot from their trip to the Royal Observatory, where they saw a planetarium show that explored our galaxy and visited the museum galleries. After studying space for the last term, we now have a year group of future astronauts and astronomers on our hands! Best regards, Mrs C. Jefferson Headteacher Pimlico Primary is part of The Future Institute. Pimlico Primary Lupus Street, London SW1V 3AT pimlicoprimary@pimlicoacademy.org Future Academies is a charity regulated by the Department for Education, and is sponsored by Future, charity number Registered office: Lupus Street, London SW1V 3AT

2 Place to be Coffee Morning with Dr Rogers Dr. Heide Rogers is our new Place2Be School Project Manager and joined Pimlico Primary in November. Heide is a qualified movement psychotherapist and has worked with patients and families presenting with a range of issues, including learning difficulties and disabilities, depression, bullying, family conflicts, bereavement, adoption, eating disorders, abuse and trauma. She also trained in systemic therapy and has led family constellation workshops. She loves swimming, hiking and cycling in the outdoors, and also practises mindfulness and dance. Dr Rogers is in school on Mondays and Wednesday mornings. Please come along to our coffee morning on Wednesday 12th at 9am to meet Dr Rogers and find out more. Sayers Croft Year 4 had a fun-filled week of activities, including: orienteering, high ropes, pond dipping, bouldering and a challenge course. The food was delicious, the beds comfortable and we even found time for some reading and story telling! Making the beds:

6 E-Safety Tip of the Month Blue Light What is blue light? The effect blue light has on your sleep and more. Blue light can affect your sleep and potentially cause disease. Until the invention of artificial lighting, the sun was the major source of lighting, and people spent their evenings in (relative) darkness. Now, in much of the world, evenings are illuminated, and we take our easy access to all those lumens pretty much for granted. But we may be paying a price for basking in all that light. At night, light throws the body's biological clock the circadian rhythm out of whack. Sleep suffers. Worse, research shows that it may contribute to the causation of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. What is blue light? Not all colours of light have the same effect. Blue wavelengths which are beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction times, and mood seem to be the most disruptive at night. And the proliferation of electronics with screens, as well as energy-efficient lighting, is increasing our exposure to blue wavelengths, especially after sundown. Is night time light exposure bad? Some studies suggest a link between exposure to light at night to some types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. That's not proof that night time light exposure causes these conditions; nor is it clear why it could be bad for us. But we do know that exposure to light suppresses the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that influences circadian rhythms, and there's some experimental evidence (it's very preliminary) that lower melatonin levels might explain the association with cancer. A Harvard study shed a little bit of light on the possible connection to diabetes and possibly obesity. The researchers put 10 people on a schedule that gradually shifted the timing of their circadian rhythms. Their blood sugar levels increased, throwing them into a prediabetic state, and levels of leptin, a hormone that leaves people feeling full after a meal, went down. Even dim light can interfere with a person's circadian rhythm and melatonin secretion. Light at night is part of the reason so many people don't get enough sleep, says Lockley, and researchers have linked short sleep to increased risk for depression, as well as diabetes and cardiovascular problems. Effects of blue light and sleep While light of any kind can suppress the secretion of melatonin, blue light at night does so more powerfully. Harvard researchers and their colleagues conducted an experiment comparing the effects of 6.5 hours of exposure to blue light to exposure to green light of comparable brightness. The blue light suppressed melatonin for about twice as long as the green light and shifted circadian rhythms by twice as much (3 hours vs. 1.5 hours).

7 Protect yourself from blue light at night Use dim red lights for night lights. Red light has the least power to shift circadian rhythm and suppress melatonin. Avoid looking at bright screens beginning two to three hours before bed. For children going to bed at 8pm, this means ending screen time at 5pm. Expose yourself to lots of bright light during the day, which will boost your ability to sleep at night, as well as your mood and alertness during daylight. Which devices emit blue light? Some of the devices around your home emitting blue light include: Ipads/ tablets Mobile phones Televisions Christmas Jumper Day On Thursday 20th, we ask children to wear a Christmas jumper and donate at least a pound to charity for doing so. If your child doesn't have a Christmas jumper, have fun decorating an old one! All proceeds go to Save the Children, a charity that the children will learn about in school. This is a NGO that promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries. A 2 donation could pay for antibiotics to cure 5 children pf pneumonia, one of the biggest killers of children.
