1 S1 to S3 - CfE SCIENCE Rationale The S1-S3 Science course has been designed to nurture and stimulate the curiosity and questioning of our pupils. The S1-S3 topics cover a broad range of outcomes in a thematic approach which encompasses Biology, Chemistry and Physics., and Health and Wellbeing entitlements are also embedded in the broad general education. With a national focus on Developing, opportunities for pupils to develop transferrable skills that can be applied in the workplace, are also embedded in our curriculum. A range of homework tasks is also issued to support learning in class. Each topic will have specific homework booklets. Homework will be issued every 1-2 weeks depending on the outcomes being covered by the class teacher and other relevant or research-type homework activities may also be issued where relevant. If parents/carers wish to look at the full list of CfE Science outcomes, please follow this link Assessment As well as opportunities for ongoing formative assessment, each broad topic will have an assessed investigation, a mid-topic and an end-of-topic summative assessment. S1 Who wants to be a Scientist? This topic will introduce pupils to general concepts in Secondary Science such as the scientific method the media s portrayal of Science and how to plan and carry out practical work. Moreover, pupils will learn how to set up investigations with an assessed investigation as the final assessment in this topic. Topic Major Concepts/Outcomes Covered What is Science? 2 This topic will introduce pupils to a broad range of concepts in medical science. Pupils will look at anatomy and physiology of the human body, living cells and therapeutic uses of cells, medical physics and occupations within the health sector. S2 Science Street This topic explores the application of Science in everyday life and at home. Pupils will be introduced to the concepts of elements, the atom and the periodic table. Chemical reactions and bonding, as well as fuels and hydrocarbons will be taught before the mid-topic assessment. Pupils will then explore acids/alkalis, electricity, circuits and magnetism before learning about the work of Newton and energy and forces. Science Street S2 Periodic Table: properties and uses of elements relative to their positions SCN 3-15a The structure of atoms and how they join. SCN 4-15a Current and voltage in series and parallel circuits. Design a circuit to show the advantages of parallel circuits. SCN 3-09a

Pupils will then learn about extracting useful resources from the Earth, before focusing on the impact of/mitigating climate change and learning for sustainability. Thinking about wider issues. Space: The Final Frontier In this topic, pupils begin looking at our solar system before exploring the universe beyond and learning about wider concepts such as gravity and acceleration. Pupils then look at requirements for life, extremophiles and consider the possibility of life on exoplanets. The topic not only culminates with a summative assessment, but also with a group rocket-building project. Making informed decisions. S3 CSI: Crime Scene Investigation In this topic, pupils will learn about the various laboratory skills and techniques involved in forensic science. Pupils will learn about separation techniques. Pupils then look at fingerprinting, blood and DNA before applying their knowledge to solve a crime in class.
