1 2016 ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, AND OTHER DRUG SURVEY Full Summary The 2016 Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) Survey was developed to identify high-risk drinking predictors for North Dakota college students and inform interventions specific to college students and each campus represented in the North Dakota University System (NDUS). The 2016 ATOD survey was administered in an electronic format using Qualtrics survey software (Qualtrics Provo, UT). Included are questions regarding respondent demographics, alcohol and other drug use behaviors, and perceptions of alcohol and other drugs. All undergraduate students at North Dakota State University () were invited to participate in this study. A total of 11,612 students were contacted through . Students received up to five messages explaining the purpose of the survey and asking them to participate. A total of 2,748 students responded to the survey invitation. However, 25 of these students declined to participate in the survey by selecting the I decline to participate in this survey option in the informed consent portion of the survey, and 92 students opted out of all additional survey contacts after receiving one or more survey invitation messages. This means that a total of 2,631 students answered one or more questions in the survey. The key findings are summarized below. 1 The resulting data set is compared with the data sets from previous NDCORE surveys ( ) and with the 2016 composite data (ND Aggregate) from the eleven NDUS institutions (ND University System, 2017). It is also compared with the most recent National CORE data set (National) collected from 39,064 students in 2013 (Southern Illinois University Carbondale/Core Institute, 2014). Overall Findings Demographics 20.8% of students are freshmen, 22.4% are sophomores, 21.3% are juniors, 35.4% are seniors 97.3% are full-time students, 2.7% are part-time students 54.5% are male, 45.5% are female 51.6% were below the age of 21 (underage), 48.4% were aged 21 or older 36.4% live on-campus 61.4% reported working full or part-time Alcohol Use The average number of drinks consumed per week is The mean peak blood alcohol content (BAC) is.115 for males and.102 for females. 43.7% reported binge drinking (having 5 drinks in one sitting) within the past two weeks. 74.2% have used alcohol within the past 30 days. 1 Unless otherwise noted, all survey results were weighted to adjust for survey nonresponse bias, age (21 years and older / under 21 years old), and birth sex (male / female). 2 Alcohol Use, continued While most students (79.7%) have used alcohol at least once within the last year, 45.2% reported weekly use over the past year. The most common places underage students reported using alcohol were: private parties (55.7%), where they live (48.4%), and in a residence hall (25.3%). The most common sources used by underage students to obtain alcohol were: from friends older than 21 (56.3%), from parents with their consent (31.1%), or from friends under 21 (15.1%). Table 1. Past-year Marijuana Use (%): Other Drug Use The most commonly reported drugs, other than alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana, were prescription drugs for non-medical reasons. Past 30-day and past-year rates of non-medical prescription drug use were 3.2% and 5.0% respectively. Past year and Past 30-day rates of other drug use (including amphetamines, heroin, inhalants, or synthetic drugs) were lower than two percent. The most common sources to obtain prescription drugs for non-medical use were: friends at school (35.1%), friends at home (23.9%), and self (13.4%). Past 30-day use of amphetamines and other drugs (such as heroin, inhalants, and synthetic drugs) use was 0.8% and 1.2% respectively. Consequences of Alcohol and/or Drug Use The following (8 out of 19) consequences were reported at the all-time lows: had at least one hangover (59.8%); reported driving a car while under the influence (15.3%); missed a class (22.1%); performed poorly on a test or project (15.2%); had a memory loss at least once (31.4%); got into an argument or fight (21.0%); had been in trouble with authorities (8.5%); and damaged property, pulled a fire alarm, etc. (4.4%). Notably, the percent of students driving a car while under the influence (15.3%) was reported below the national reference (16.5%) for the first time. 10 Treatment and Recovery 1.8% consider themselves to be in recovery from alcohol or other drug abuse. This is a substantial decrease from 2014 (7.9%). 1.3% have been to treatment for alcohol, other drugs or both alcohol and other drugs. This is a significant decrease from 2014 (4.9%).
