1 2014 NDCORE ALCOHOL AND DRUG SURVEY Greek Affiliated Student Summary The NDCORE Survey was developed in conjunction with the Core Institute of Southern Illinois University to identify high-risk drinking predictors for ND college students and used to develop evidence-based interventions specific to ND and for each campus. The NDCORE Survey contains several items about alcohol and drugs, including questions specific to ND culture. Included are questions regarding respondent demographics, alcohol and other drug use behaviors, and perceptions of alcohol and other drugs. Thirteen campus-specific questions were also included in s survey. All undergraduate students at had the opportunity to be included in this study through a stratified random sampling procedure, which included a total of students. Students were drawn from all ethnic backgrounds, all colleges, and all classes (e.g. freshman, sophomore). Responses indicate that 44 of the respondents are in Greek organizations, 30 in fraternities and 14 in sororities, with 17 fraternity members and 12 sorority members under the age of 21. Results show comparisons between the Greek students and the non-greek student population as summarized below. MAJOR FINDINGS Alcohol abstinence rates are below 10% for both Fraternity and Sorority members compared to nearly 20% in the non-greek affiliated student population. Fraternity and Sorority affiliated students report similar rates of binge drinking; these rates continue to outpace binge drinking rates of non-greek students at. Average peak BAC estimates also reflect higher intensity drinking amongst Greek affiliated students compared to the non-greek student population. In addition, underage drinking rates are higher amongst Greek affiliated students compared to the non-greek student population. Friends over (and under) 21 yr. and adult acquaintances are primary sources of alcohol for underage Fraternity and Sorority affiliated students. Underage Fraternity students also report parents (with consent) and adult acquaintances as common sources of alcohol. 1 All findings except demographic frequencies are weighted by classification to ensure representativeness of the undergraduate population. For all non-demographic analysis, graduate and other students are removed from the population, for a total n of 555.
