IF YOU DRINK, IT DOES NOT BOTHER ME. WRONG! The American Journal on Addictions 10(suppl.):1-2, 2001 Approximately 14 million adults either abuse alcohol or are alcoholics. In addition, several million more adults have unsafe drinking habits that could lead to problems with alcohol. These numbers translate into enormous monetary costs: alcohol misuse costs society approximately $185 billion annually in terms of lost productivity, medical and legal costs and property damage. Dissemination of research on alcoholism is thus critical for improving the health of the nation. 6/9/2010 8

Social Values Your nuclear family is a culture. Different cultures have different social values. Social Value 1: Abstinence The family does not drink at all. The problems associated with drinking are not worth it. Social Value 2: Moderation. The family will drink but it is though of as being improper and not acceptable to get drunk. Social Value 3: Permissive: Drink as much as you want and get as drunk as you want. 6/9/2010 9

OBJECTIVE To have people carry out responsible drinking driving decisions which will prevent future DWI/DUI behavior. 6/9/2010 6:12 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 13

What is the pattern of your drinking? Do you drink only on weekends or after work? Was the situation which led to your arrest unique or had similar situations previously occurred? 6/9/2010 6:12 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 14

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR DECLINE IN PERCENTAGE OF ALCOHOL-RELATED DEATHS IN TEXAS More enforcement? Stronger Laws? Lower BAC level used? More breath tests given? Education? 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 19 A-5 7

6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 21

DEFINITION OF INTOXICATION IN TEXAS Alcohol concentration of.08 or more. Not having normal use of mental or physical faculties because of alcohol or other drugs. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 22 A-6 9

Blood Alcohol Content BAC Blood Alcohol Concentration is the concentration of alcohol in the blood. It is measured either as a percentage by mass, by mass per volume, or a combination. For example, a BAC of 0.20% can mean 2 grams of alcohol per 1000 grams of blood. In most countries BAC is reported as grams of alcohol per liter of blood (g/l). Because of specific gravity of blood is close to 1 g/cm3, the numerical value of BAC measured as mass per volume and that of BAC measured as mass per mass do not differ to any consequential degree other than the placement of the decimal point. For Example: 1 g/l is equivalent to 0.94 g/kg. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 23

BAC can be roughly estimated using a mathematical approach. It is not as accurate as a breathalyzer. While thee are several ways to calculate BAC, one of the most effective ways is to simply measure the total amount of alcohol consumed divided by the total amount of water in the body effectively giving the percent alcohol per volume water in the blood. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 24

Metabolism and excretion Alcohol is removed from the bloodstream by a combination of metabolism, excretion, and evaporation. The relative proportion disposed of it in each way varies from person to person, but typically about 92 to 98% is metabolized, 1 to 3% is excreted in urine, and 1 to 5% evaporates through the breath. A very small proportion (less than 0.5%) is also excreted in the sweat, tears, etc. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 25

Gender plays an important role in the amount of water a person has. Women 49%. In general, men have a higher percent of water per pound 58% than This fact alone explains why men require more alcohol than women to achieve the same BAC level. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 26

Chemical factors acetaldehyde dehydrogenate Women s Alcohol metabolism varies from that me due to biochemical factors the enzyme which breaks alcohol and the effects of oral contraceptives. Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase is the enzyme which breaks down alcohol. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 27

Excretion» Excretion into urine typically begins after about 40 minutes, whereas metabolisation commences as soon as the alcohol is absorbed, and even before alcohol levels have risen in the brain. In fact, in some males, alcohol dehydrogenase levels in the stomach are high enough that some metabolization occurs even before the alcohol is absorbed. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 28

Slowing down detoxification Rate of detoxification of alcohol can be slowed by certain drugs which interfere with the action of heavy metals, and some pyrazole compounds. Also suspected of having this effect are Tagament, Zantax and Tylenol. Alcohol in non-carbonated beverages is absorbed more slowly than alcohol in carbonated drinks. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 29

Lower BAC level? The legal limit for intoxication was at.10% BAC until September 1, 1999 when it was lowered to.08%. Having a lower BAC level could influence drivers to reduce alcohol consumption before driving, and this could be a reason for future reduction in alcoholrelated deaths. As the average BAC at arrest in Texas is.16, this may not be a significant factor. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 33

More breath tests given? If more breath tests were given, this would be expected to increase convictions that in turn could have a deterrent effect on DWI and, thus, lower deaths. Breath tests actually declined from 100,855 in 1983 to 57,402 in Therefore, this cannot be a reason. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 34

Education? Education programs for persons convicted of DWI have been implemented, especially since 1984, and general education in alcohol/drug use has been improved. Studies by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse have indicated that a person is 50% less likely to be rearrested for DWI offense if he/she has completed such a program. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 35

1. What is BAC:? Evaluation 2. What are three possible reasons for decline in DWI deaths in TEXAS? 3.What percentage of drivers killed in Texas in 2002 had alcohol in their system? 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 36

What happen at the time of your Had you been drinking? arrest? Batson: Yes, but I had only 3-4 beers. Why did the officer say he stopped you? Batson: Well, I left the Loma Linda Club t about 1:15 A. M. and was headed home. A cop pulled me over about ten minutes later. He said I did not have my headlights on. It was a full moon, and with the streetlights, I guess I did not notice and I forgot to turn them on. 6/9/2010 6:13 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 37

Time of arrest.. Did he ask you to take a breath test? Batson: Yes, but I refused. What is the law in Texas for refusing a test? What about Implied Consent? 55 Alcohol/Drugs decrease mental and physical ability TRUE. 1. Perception a person s perception of how well he/she is performing is greatly influenced by the consumption of alcohol or other drugs, and that people often believe that their abilities are better than they really are. 2. The depressant action of drugs and alcohol on the brain and central nervous system lowers mental and physical functions and keeps a person from performing complex tasks such as driving. 6/9/2010 6:15 PM c2009 Eva Gregory,MA, LCDC,SPA,CCJAP 55

There are ways to sober up quickly FALSE. Time is the only way to sober up. Define: SOBER UP It is not the temporary increases in mental alertness, but rather the removal of alcohol or other drugs from the system. The liver is the organ which detoxifies alcohol. TIME is the only factor that will produce a lower BAC in an individual s body. A cold shower, long walk or black coffee will not work.
