9 The Poppy the central symbol of remembrance Poppies became used as a way to remember soldiers who died in battle, because of how the flowers sprung up and grew on the barren battlefields of World War One. The poem 'In Flanders Fields' was written in May 1915 by a Canadian soldier, John McCrae. It says, "We shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders Fields.

10 The Poppy the central symbol of remembrance Flanders Fields was a place where many battles took place. The poem meant that, even though soldiers got hurt and sometimes their lives ended in the war, the poppies still grew. The poppies represented hope. John McCrae: Surgeon Died Jan 28 th 1918

11 The Poppy the central symbol of remembrance A French lady called Madame Guerin liked the poem so much that she started to sell poppies to raise money for the places in France which had been damaged by the war. A man called George Howson made and sold the poppies in Britain to raise money to help people who had been disabled by the war. A simple poppy design was used so men who had lost a hand could assemble them. The poppy is still worn by millions of people every November.

14 Ormiston Six Villages Academy visit to Flanders Over the last two years, students from Ormiston Six Villages Academy have visited Flanders as a part of a joint History and French trip. During this visit, they have visited battlefields, graveyards and the Belgian city of Ypres.

27 Reflection Let us always remember those who have made sacrifices beyond our imagination so that we may enjoy peace and freedom As we pause from our everyday life we give thanks to all men and women who have given their lives in order to make our world a better place May their sacrifice not have been in vain May we also remember our friends, family members and colleagues who have passed away this year
