1 ADDRESSING MATERNAL AND INFANT MORTALITY: STRATEGIES THAT CHANGE THE HEALTH EQUALITY EQUATION FOR WOMEN, CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Deborah Kaplan, DrPH, MPH, R-PA Assistant Commissioner Bureau of Maternal, Infant and Reproductive Health November 15 th, 2018 Birth Equity in NYC New York City has adopted a comprehensive approach to address the root causes of persistent, unacceptable and preventable racial/ethnic disparities in infant mortality and severe maternal morbidity.

2 Achieving Birth Equity in NYC Our work acknowledges the ways racism and gender oppression conspire to create poor birth outcomes. Achieving birth equity requires coordinated activities across the Health Department s divisions, in partnership with government agencies, healthcare systems and community partners. We are committed to leading with communities and healthcare systems to ignite sustainable change. CenteringPregnancy Group prenatal care model associated with lower rates of preterm birth and low birthweight, higher rates of breastfeeding, greater patient satisfaction and improved outcomes for Black patients. Centering Healthcare Institute (CHI) and the NYC Health Department are joining efforts to expand access to CenteringPregnancy in NYC! Focus on developing and supporting Centering practices in areas reporting the highest incidence of poor birth and maternal health outcomes. Selected sites will receive staff training, technical assistance, and support with project materials.
